SAN DIEGO — Football icon Drew Brees gave a Temecula, California teenager the gift of a lifetime this week.The New Orleans Saints QB surprised Alex Ruiz at a Del Mar flag football event with a prosthetic leg."Surprise," Brees yelled into a microphone.Ruiz suffered a severe leg injury while playing football in October 2017. The quarterback at Linfield Christian School in Temecula was rolling out of the pocket when he was tackled and injured. The injury forced an amputation of Ruiz's foot.Brees presented the teen with a walking prosthetic Friday."If there's anything above cloud nine that's where I'm at right now," Ruiz said, all smiles after Brees asked him what he planned to do first with his new prosthetic.Brees added that once Ruiz gets the hang of it, he'll receive an athletic prosthetic as well with which to begin athletic training. But that didn't stop the two quarterbacks from sharing a quick pass."It's going to allow him to walk around, get around, and then eventually get to the point where he's able to play football again," Brees said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. — For months, health professionals have urged the public to help stop the spread of COVID-19, while promoting face coverings, social distancing, and hand washing.“We’ve known for a long time that this virus is an enveloped virus and has an outer lipid layer, and we know that it’s sensitive to agents that can disrupt this fatty outer shell. That’s why we ask patients and people to wash their hands with soap," said Dr. Kami Hoss, founder and CEO of The Super Dentists in San Diego. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Hoss has also asked patients to swish some mouthwash before they sit down for care.“That’s just one more layer of protection we’ve added," said Dr. Hoss. Now, researchers at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom are learning some mouthwashes can kill COVID-19 within 30 seconds, at least in a lab setting. The study found mouthwashes containing .07 percent of cetylpyridinium chloride showed promising signs of combating the virus, as well as those with ethyl lauroyl arginate. But while these mouthwashes killed the virus in the lab, the virus is continuously replicating in humans. (KGTV) -- Homeless people in San Diego woke up Tuesday morning to find San Diego Police officers going street by street, offering resources.  Police officers lined the streets of the East Village. They were going street by street approaching the homeless in their tents. At one point there were at least eight patrol cars on one block.  SDPD says their efforts are a part of their ongoing outreach to let the homeless know about the resources available to them in hopes of ending the cycle of homelessness.  Most of the homeless received warnings about their property blocking the street or other violations. A few were detained for previous violations. One person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant. Two people were transported to county mental health. Officers were also letting people know about the new bathrooms installed by the city in hopes of stopping the spread of Hepatitis A.  965

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353
