SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to wrong-way crashes in San Diego County, 2018 is off to an unfortunate start.There have been numerous wrong-way vehicle crashes around the county nearly eight weeks into the new year, and authorities have not been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing an uptick in these types of crashes.According to Caltrans data, from 1995-2012, an average of 23 people died each year in wrong-way crashes on California roadways.San Diego had 13 wrong-way fatalities recorded in 2015 -- the last year Caltrans data was compiled for wrong-way crashes.In 2017, Caltrans launched a two-year pilot program in San Diego and Sacramento that focuses on ways to not only prevent wrong-way crashes but to also alert authorities in the event a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.As part of the test program, Caltrans has deployed reflective pavement markings on off-ramps and signs with flashing lights that turn on if a wrong-way vehicle is detected.Caltrans has not yet provided data collected from the program to determine the protective measures' effectiveness.Here's a look at wrong-way crashes on San Diego County roadways in the past 12 months.Feb. 20, 2018: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after wrong-way crash-- A driver was hospitalized -- and also arrested -- after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on Fairmount Ave. when he hit another vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When the Chargers bolted north to the Los Angeles area, not only did they vacate what’s now known as SDCCU stadium, they also emptied out of their facility off Murphy Canyon Road.Formerly known as Chargers Park, the facility belongs to the City of San Diego. Team 10 discovered even though the site is vacant, the utility and maintenance bills continue to pile up.According to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78. The most recent water and wastewater bill from the end of June to the end of July 2018 shows a balance of more than ,000 and a year's worth of landscaping, maintenance, and fire safety repairs ran ,067.12.A city spokesperson said any vacant building still has operating and utility costs.“This is not a way to maximize taxpayer dollars,” said San Diego Councilmember David Alvarez, who saw the bills Team 10 received through a public information request.In 2017, Alvarez and Councilmember Lorie Zapf backed a plan that would have transformed the facility into a temporary homeless shelter. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Only recently identified through DNA testing, Marine Sgt. Millard Odom was laid to rest Tuesday at Miramar National Cemetery.Tuesday was the 75th anniversary of Odom's being killed in action during World War II in the battle for the Pacific Island of Tarawa.Sgt. Odom had been buried in Hawaii for 69 years with no name on his marker.  Now his loved ones are able to pay tribute.His niece, Pollyanna Brown, spoke at the service."Even after 75 years our family is one of the lucky ones that have the privilege and honor to bury our lost loved one," said Brown.Several other veterans, including the Patriot Guard Riders, attended the service. 687
