SAN DIEGO (CNS) - No charges were filed Wednesday against a 19-year-old man arrested along with three teenage girls for allegedly attacking and severely beating a 56-year-old man near Petco Park.The investigation is continuing into the case against 19-year-old Dominick Wells in connection with the attack that left Edward Leon Starland on life support, said Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.Three girls, ages 14, 15 and 17, also were arrested on suspicion of felony battery, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs. One of the girls had a detention hearing at Juvenile Court Wednesday.Starland was attacked about 2:10 p.m. last Sunday near the pedestrian bridge adjacent to Petco Park, Dobbs said.Police and paramedics found the victim unresponsive.Investigators determined the victim got into an argument with a group of teenagers and was knocked to the ground, then beaten, the lieutenant said.When witnesses started yelling at the attackers to stop, they fled east on Imperial Avenue, he said.Wells was arrested about 3:15 a.m. the next morning. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public today for information about an Egyptian man who was found dead under potentially suspicious circumstances off the coast of Mission Beach.The body of 37-year-old Haitham "Max" Elshayeb was floating about two and a half miles from shore when a fisherman on a boat spotted it shortly before 10:30 a.m. Oct. 10, San Diego police said.The body, dressed only in surfer-style shorts, didn't show any obvious signs of traumatic injuries, Lt. Anthony Dupree said. A possibly suspicious circumstance, however, was a chain wrapped around the dead man's waist, though it might have been used simply as a belt or style accessory, the lieutenant said.Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the fatality "out of an abundance of caution," and the death has been classified as suspicious, Dupree said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Cruise ships are scheduled to return to the Port of San Diego this week and through the new year, part of an effort by the cruise lines to reestablish ships in U.S. waters as a prerequisite to resume cruising in a post-COVID-19 world, it was announced Monday.Five Holland America Line ships and one Princess Cruises ship are scheduled to arrive beginning Wednesday, periodically docking at the B Street Cruise Terminal for fuel, food, supplies and services. At this time, none of the vessels will be carrying passengers or conducting any sailings, according to local port officials.To resume cruises after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deems it safe in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ships must reestablish operations in United States waters to meet CDC and U.S. Coast Guard guidelines.According to port officials, time spent docked in San Diego will be limited. Each ship is scheduled to dock at B Street the morning of their scheduled arrival date and depart that evening.The Holland America Line ships are scheduled to remain in the San Diego area and may be visible off the coast, with some periodically positioning in the outer anchorage just outside of San Diego Bay off the coast of Coronado. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who jumped onstage during a Taylor Swift concert at Petco Park in 2015 and was tackled by members of her security team -- seriously injuring one of them -- is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday for allegedly beating a man to death in the Midway District earlier this month. Christian Ewing, 29, was arrested last Friday for a parole violation and was re-arrested Monday on suspicion of murder in the death of 57-year-old Gregory Freeman. Freeman was found Dec. 5 in the 3900 block of Rosecrans Street near the Interstate 5 overpass, police said. Freeman, who had trauma to his upper body, was taken to a hospital but died four days later. One witness told police that Freeman was on the ground when a man began to hit him with some sort of object. The attacker then fled, said San Diego police Lt. Anthony Dupree. More than three years ago, Ewing sneaked into Swift's concert and jumped onstage while she was performing. He was tackled by security guards, one of whom suffered a broken rib.
