Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people.  “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club.  “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management.  They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action.  Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity. United Airlines is looking to add flights to their schedule in October, including resuming previously canceled trips and adding new ones.According to the airline, this will bring them up to flying 40 percent of their full schedule in October compared to October 2019. In September, they are only expecting to fly 34 percent of their full schedule.The news comes a week after the airline announced it will furlough more than 16,000 employees in October. That’s when federal bailout money from the federal government expires.The resumed flights include eight routes to Hawaii, “pending approval of the state’s pre-arrival COVID testing program.” Hawaii recently extended their out-of-state visitors ban to October 1. Once they allow visitors and tourists again, travelers must fill out a “safe travels” form and go through pandemic screening measures."We continue to be data-driven and realistic in our approach to rebuilding our network," Ankit Gupta, United's vice president of Domestic Network Planning said in a press release. "Because October is typically a slower month for leisure travel, we're adjusting our schedules to reflect these seasonal changes in customer demand while resuming service or adding capacity on routes where we're seeing increased customer demand for travel."Some of those “data-driven” decisions may have led United to realign their schedule to match “current demand for leisure travel.” The airline says in October they will add more flights on days popular with leisure travelers looking for a long weekend getaway, and will schedule fewer flights on days where demand is lower.Other changes and additions in October include:Resuming or starting new service on nearly 50 routes in the US; mostly from United’s hubs in Chicago, Denver and Houston.Resuming additional service to Florida and along the west coast.Resuming service to 14 international destinations, including parts of South America and Mexico.United was one of the airlines last week who announced they will be permanently eliminating change fees on flights within the US. TUCSON, Arizona — As teachers vote on a potential walk out their employers are trying to figure out what to do if that happens.Tucson Unified School District Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo said Tuesday a prolonged walk out that affects final exams could jeopardize high school graduation schedules.He says TUSD is trying to find a way to keep schools open and busses running so students who rely on schools for meals can eat. That would include a skeletal bus schedule and at least some staff coming to work. “Schools physically would be open, but instructional services would be closed. There would be no classes running,” Trujillo said.He said the district does not a have substitute pool large enough to fill classrooms in the case of a walk out. 763

Uncertainty has ruled the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, as schools work to get students back in the classroom, school districts are working with uncertainty as they expect there to be a significant shortage of substitute teachers. “It’s a mathematical certainty that we’ll be opening up schools without enough teachers,” said Nicola Soares, president of Kelly Education, a substitute teacher recruiting firm that places more than a million substitute teachers in classes across the country. “We’ve been working around the clock anticipating what that demand was going to be, and I think every single school district is going to require substitute teachers.” The substitute teaching shortage began long before the pandemic began, but Soares expects the virus to only exacerbate the problem. In the mid-2000s, Kelly Education found 10 percent of incoming college freshmen were pursuing a degree in education. Today, that number has fallen to 4.5 percent. Add in the fact that many substitute teachers are older retirees, and they might choose not to come back to the classroom this fall because of the health risks associated with the novel coronavirus. “I love my job. I know a lot of subs say it’s not worth it to go back [because] we make just above minimum wage,” said Kathryn Barrett, a substitute teacher in Florida. Barrett says the pandemic has put many substitutes at the middle of the crossroads, where they feel compelled to work because many have been struggling with unemployment, but at the same time they do not want to risk their health or the health of their families. Many substitutes move from school to school during the week, Barrett says, increasing the risk of contracting the virus and then spreading it. “There’s just a lot of unknown right now for substitutes,” she said. Kelly Education took a survey of more than 2,000 educators and administrators nationwide. Those teachers estimated teacher vacancy rates would increase come the fall, and the need for substitutes would rise by 71 percent over the course of the next five years. To incentivize people to take up substitute teaching states has adjusted. In Iowa, the governor suspended the limit on how long a substitute teacher can teach a certain class. The state also decreased the minimum age requirement from 21 to 20, hoping furloughed workers or recent graduates may look to substitute teaching as an alternative form of work. “What if I get sick?” asked Barrett. TULSA, Oklahoma -- The suspect in an Amber Alert and stabbing was seen smiling Tuesday afternoon after her arrest.Police in Tulsa, Oklahoma said 39-year-old Taheerah Ahmad stabbed her 11-year-old daughter on Monday night. The 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in "very" critical condition, where she remains unconscious.An Amber Alert was issued after police said Ahmad also abducted her eight-year-old child. Ahmad was located around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in a parking lot in Tulsa. The 8-year-old child was also found safe. Police said citizens walking in the area noticed the vehicle and contacted authorities. Ahmad was taken into custody without incident. Police said she had been in that parking area for 17 hours before being found. Police said the woman admitted to the crime. Ahmad said she became upset with her children, and bound two of her children's hands with duct tape. She said the 11-year-old child fought back, and she stabbed the child 50 to 60 times and hit her in the head with a pick ax, according to police. She was arrested on counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, first-degree arson and abuse of a child.  1209
