BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan met with Baek Seung-joo, vice defense minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK), here on Thursday.

Hong said China has always been a steadfast force in maintaining peace and stability in the East and South China Sea as well as in safeguarding the United Nations charter, basic codes of international relations and fundamental principles of international law, noting that China hopes there is no instability in surrounding areas, including the East and South China Sea.

During the visit, Zhang said China is ready to work with Russia to push for substantial progress on major joint projects and to promote in-depth growth of the China-Russia relations with "substantial results of bilateral energy cooperation."

As for Japan, both China and South Korea firmly oppose the country's denial and beautification of its history of aggression, and stay on high alert of its recent move to revive past militarism, he added.

Vice Premier Zhang said the breakthrough on the natural gas project and other large-scale projects helped drive the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership into a new era of development.
