DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV)- After the recent horse deaths at the Del Mar Racetrack, a small group of animal activists is proposing a ban on horse racing. Local supporters of the track are saying "no." Animal rights activists were set to speak at the California Horse Racing Board meeting Thursday morning when things got heated between both sides before the session started. "We are trying to initiate a ban on horse racing, not just in California but in this country," says animal rights activist Ellen Ericksen. Ericksen says she's concerned about the safety of the animals who spend most of their time racing. "Horses are dying left and right."Supporters of the horse racing industry say the animals are being taken care of. "We take every precaution we can with these horses because we love them," says Jockey Aaron Gryder. Gryder has been a jockey at the Del Mar Racetrack for the past 32 years. "It's not our job; it's our passion."This past summer, the Del Mar Racetrack implemented new protocols to ensure horse safety, like having veterinarians on the track during every workout. "We want to make sure when the horses step out on the racetrack they are 100% in great condition," says Gryder.Supporters also say doing away with horse racing could leave a lot of people without a job. "They have plenty of time to start looking for other employment," says Ericksen. "They have plenty of time to get re-trained."A statement sent to 10News from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says: "Del Mar has implemented an unprecedented series of safety and welfare measures over the last several years and, while we always will strive to do better, these reforms are working. In addition, the horse racing industry in California supports 18,000 jobs and has a .6 billion economic impact in the state. Racing at Del Mar is a longstanding tradition enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of Californians."The labor union, which represents all employees, owners, and jockeys, was present at the California Horse Racing Board meeting. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Train traffic in Del Mar was stopped Wednesday, after a cliff collapse near 11th Street. It was a beautiful afternoon for sun and surf until the earth came tumbling down. Del Mar resident, Ingrid Hoffmeister has seen it for years - the cliffs in front of her home, slowly disappearing.“We all know it’s happening, so it’s not a surprise," Hoffmeister said. “It’s getting closer and closer to the path of where you’re walking.”Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, plumes of dust filled the air, as enormous chunks of the Del Mar cliffs came crumbling down onto the beach. DETROIT — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is activating an emergency plan in response an outbreak of hepatitis A.The number of cases continues to rise in Michigan. The department is activating what is called the Community Health Emergency Coordination Center."To help coordinate Michigan’s response to the hepatitis A outbreak, we are opening the Community Health Emergency Coordination Center to assist the multiple local public health jurisdictions involved in the response and prevention of further cases," said MDHHS Director Nick Lyon.The emergency coordination center will provide support to health departments, hospitals, EMS and other health care providers.Health care providers are asked to encourage hepatitis A vaccination."We know that the hepatitis A vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in protecting someone who may be exposed to hepatitis A," said Dr. Eden Wells, Chief Medical Executive with the MDHHS. "Without a single source associated with these cases, the importance of vaccination and proper hygiene is vital to ensuring we stop the person-to-person spread of hepatitis A." There have been 457 confirmed cases of hepatitis A since August 1, 2016. This number includes 18 fatalities associated with the outbreak and affected a number of cities; City of Detroit, Huron, Ingham, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties reported to MDHHS.Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver caused by a virus and is a vaccine-preventable disease.Symptoms may appear from two to six weeks after exposure, with the average time being about one month. They include sudden abdominal pain, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, headache, dark urine, and vomiting followed by yellowing of the skin and eyes.To reduce the risk of contracting Hepatitis A, health officials recommend the following points of emphasis:*Wash hands frequently, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing and eating food.*Clean and disinfect all surface areas if someone in the household or workplace has symptoms., especially areas such as toilets. sinks, trashcans, doorknobs and faucet handles.*Do not prepare food if you have symptoms and refrain from food preparation for at least three days after symptoms have ended, or two weeks after onset of clinical symptoms, whichever is longer.*Get the Hepatitis A vaccine. 2428

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it will recall nearly 69,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric cars worldwide, and 51,000 of them in the U.S. because the batteries have caught fire in five of them.The company says it doesn't know yet what's causing the fires, but engineers are working to figure it out. Two people have suffered smoke inhalation due to the fires and a house set ablaze. U.S. safety regulators said the cars should be parked outdoors until recall repairs are done. Bolt Executive Chief Engineer Jesse Ortega says dealers will install software that limits charging to 90% of the battery's capacity until a permanent fix is developed. The recall covers Bolts from 2017 through 2019 model years.According to the Associated Press, Bolts that have caught on fire have battery cells that were made at an LG Chem factory in Ochang, South Korea, from May of 2016 to May of 2019. 887

DELANO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people died in a crash Tuesday after a traffic stop by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the city of Delano, near Bakersfield.The Delano Police Department arrived at the scene of the rollover just before 7 a.m. Officers found the SUV on its roof with two victims inside.Police said the SUV had been speeding when the driver went onto a dirt shoulder and lost control. The SUV flipped and stopped after it hit a power pole, according to police.The man and woman inside the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.Delano officers determined ICE agents had pulled over the SUV before the crash. Agents got out of their vehicle but the SUV driver left the scene. The SUV crashed a short time later.There is no word on the identities of the victims or why they were pulled over. 824
