(KGTV) — One man was shot and injured while using an East County ATM machine during an attempted robbery Wednesday.The man had just finished using an ATM machine at the Union Bank location at 3285 Lemon Grove Ave. when an unidentified suspect approached and tried to rob him just after 12 p.m., according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department.During the robbery, the man, described as a black man in his 40s, was shot in the leg. His condition was not immediately known. It's not clear how much was stolen from the man.The suspect was not immediately identified or reported in custody. LIMA, Peru (AP) — Archaeologists in northern Peru say they have found evidence of what could be the world's largest single case of child sacrifice.The pre-Columbian burial site, known as Las Llamas, contains the skeletons of 140 children who were between the ages of five and 14 when they were ritually sacrificed during a ceremony about 550 years ago, experts who led the excavation told The Associated Press on Friday.The site, located near the modern day city of Trujillo, also contained the remains of 200 young llamas apparently sacrificed on the same day.The burial site was apparently built by the ancient Chimu empire. It is thought the children were sacrificed as floods caused by the El Nino weather pattern ravaged the Peruvian coastline."They were possibly offering the gods the most important thing they had as a society, and the most important thing is children because they represent the future," said Gabriel Prieto, an archaeology professor at Peru's National University of Trujillo, who has led the excavation, along with John Verano of Tulane University."Llamas were also very important because these people had no other beasts of burden, they were a fundamental part of the economy," Prieto said, adding that the children were buried facing the sea, while the llamas faced the Andes Mountains to the east.Excavation work at the burial site started in 2011, but news of the findings was first published on Thursday by National Geographic, which helped finance the investigation.Prieto said that besides the bones, researchers also found footprints that have survived rain and erosion. The small footprints indicate the children were marched to their deaths from Chan Chan, an ancient city a mile away from Las Llamas, he said.Verano said the children's skeletons contained lesions on their breastbones, which were probably made by a ceremonial knife. Dislocated ribcages suggest that whoever was performing the sacrifices may have been trying to extract the children's hearts.Jeffrey Quilter, the director of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at Harvard University, described it as a "remarkable discovery."In an email, Quilter told the AP the site provides "concrete evidence" that large scale sacrifices of children occurred in ancient Peru."Reports of very large sacrifices are known from other parts of the world, but it is difficult to know if the numbers are exaggerated or not," Quilter wrote.Quilter is heading a team of scientists who will analyze DNA samples from the children's remains to see if they were related and figure out which areas of the Chimu empire the sacrificed youth came from.Several ancient cultures in the Americas practiced human sacrifices including the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Incas, who conquered the Chimu empire in the late 15th century. But the mass sacrifice of children is something that has rarely been documented.The Las Llamas site is located in a shantytown, and has been fenced off to stop illegal developers from building homes on it.Prieto says the site shows how in Peru history can be just around the corner."This site surrounded by houses in a working class neighborhood can tell us a lot about a macabre event that is perhaps one of the darkest moments in our history," Prieto said. Less than 24 hours later, temperatures had plummeted to near freezing, and snow was falling in parts of the city.A powerful cold front was the culprit for the sharp change in temperatures. The system will bring winter weather to the Denver area through Wednesday evening.According to meteorologists with Scripps station KMGH in Denver, between 3 and 7 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Front Range corridor by early Wednesday.There are also freeze warnings in effect for the Colorado plains east of Denver, where temperatures are expected to dip below freezing by Wednesday morning.Officials fear the early freeze could damage crops, some of which are about to be harvested. Officials also fear that a deep freeze with full foliage could cause tree limbs to snap and cause power outages in the area.KMGH reports that Denver's earliest snow of the season came Sept. 3, 1961, when a Labor Day storm brought 4.2 inches to the city's airport and dumped nearly a foot in the western suburbs and foothills. On Sept. 8, 1962, Denver saw its earliest freeze of the season when temperatures dipped to 31 degrees.Wednesday's snowfall was Denver's earliest in the last decade. The previous record for earlier snowfall in the last 10 years came Oct. 5, 2012. Last year's first snow came earlier than usual on Oct. 10 — still a full month earlier than Tuesday's snowfall.The enormous temperature swing between Monday and Tuesday could also turn out to be the largest swing on record. (KGTV) - Lemon Grove’s financial issues have some in city hall talking about bankruptcy or disincorporation.The city says if action is not taken to correct their budget deficit, it will eat into reserve funds that they cannot afford to lose.Lemon Grove City Council voted against increasing its sales tax last month which would have added almost two million dollars to their yearly general fund.An identical discussion occurred in 2010 when the then City Council was asked to consider a tax measure on the ballot and it was denied.“I don’t think they’re qualified to run a lemonade stand,” said Brent Johnson, a Lemon Grove resident, “I don’t understand why people spend so much money on frivolous things.”Lemon Grove has already outsourced its law enforcement to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and if the city was disincorporated its remaining governmental responsibilities would go the county.“I think it should be the county’s turn to run things here” said another resident Doug Hutton, “things could get better here.”The city maintains they are not considering disincorporation or bankruptcy right now, but a decision will have to be made in the next 4 to 7 years.Only 17 cities in the history of California have been disincorporated. 1277
