They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority.The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices.The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan. Further, the company's steel output in the first half of the year gained 29.75 percent year on year to 8.04 million tonnes.China's producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 6 percent in the January-June period, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics.However, the company was likely to face a "difficult time" in the second half of 2010 and meeting its full-year profit target would become a "challenging task" as demand from auto, home appliance and real estate sectors experienced "drastic changes" since July, leading to more restrained sales and falling prices, it said.Company officials also worried that high prices of iron ore, coal and electricity would further push up production costs and squeeze profit margins.On Friday, the price of its shares fell 2.87 percent to 4.73 yuan on the Shanghai bourse.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) - The Chinese education ministry Tuesday ordered education authorities and schools in flood-hit regions to ensure the safety of students against floods and flood triggered disasters.The ministry ordered all necessary measures be taken to guarantee the safety of students, including suspending classes, rescheduling exams, relocating classrooms to safer areas, and other actions.Also, according to the ministry, school buildings in flood-hit regions could only be put back into use after examination and approval by authorities, so that no student is endangered by the possible collapse of flood-soaked school buildings.Rainstorms and the floods that followed left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River, as of Tuesday afternoon.The education ministry also cautioned against accidents involving students during their summer vacations, such as drowning while swimming and contracting food poisoning.

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 50 people have been killed and 15 are missing following floods, landslides and mud flows that hit parts of central and southern China following days of torrential rains, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Saturday.Nearly 17.2 million residents in nine provinces were affected by flood-related disasters and 597,000 people were relocated from July 1 to 12 a.m. of July 10, the ministry said in its latest disaster relief update.About 946,500 hectares of farmland were damaged, including 133,900 hectares that were completely destroyed. Further, more than 42,000 houses collapsed and another 121,000 were damaged, the ministry said, estimating that direct economic losses could reach 8.9 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars).The ministry sent 6,000 tents to the hardest-hit Hubei Province in central China and Chongqing Municipality in southwest China on Saturday.In June, torrential rains had resulted in 260 deaths and left 211 missing in 11 southern provinces.The latest round of storms began to pound large swaths of central and southern China on July 8.In Hubei, the local weather forecast bureau said storms or thunder storms could hit the province again from July 11 to 13. It warned that rainfall would exceed 300 millimeters in some worst-hit areas, which was likely to trigger another round of heavy floods.The Three Gorges Dam, sitting in the middle reach of the Yangtze River in Hubei, on Saturday released water for the first time this year.Engineers opened three sluice gates to discharge some 32,000 cubic meters of water per second and another sluice gate to release floating objects.The flood from the upper stream reaching the dam was measured at 36,000 cubic meters of water per second and could increase to 39,000 cubic meters per second by Sunday, dam officials said.Authorities said water levels in many branches of the 6,397-meter-long Yangtze River that runs from west to east, had gone above the warning lines. About 7,500 residents were evacuated from the flooded zones.Also, four miners were killed in a gas explosion after heavy rain cut off electricity and stopped ventilation equipment at a coal mine in Xishui County of Guizhou's Zunyi City early Saturday morning. Seven of the 25 miners who were working underground managed to escape when the explosion occurred. Rescuers later saved 14 other miners.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Amid sirens and blaring horns, people across China Sunday stood in tribute to victims of a massive mudslide in a remote northwest town.Chinese leaders, students, workers and members of the public paused for three minutes from 10 a.m. Sunday, a week after the devastating mudslide hit Zhouqu County, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province.At least 1,248 people have died and 496 are listed as missing.Chinese President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and other top Chinese leaders stood and paid silent tribute to the victims at the beginning of a meeting by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee held in Beijing on Sunday morning.DEEP GRIEFAt the Dongjie Village in Zhouqu, more than 5,000 rescuers and villagers stood still on the debris of mudslide, bowing their heads in commemoration of those killed in the disaster.A huge black banner hung in front of the mourners, and wreaths lay on the ground. The white lettering on the banner read, "Mourning in deep grief for deceased compatriots of the Zhouqu massive mudslide.""I only feel sad as I stand on the debris of our homes," said villager Zhang Xiujuan."Although my husband, my son and I survived, I lost more than 30 relatives in the mudslide," she said.In Dongjie, two thirds of the families were buried when the mudslide struck. And 368 of the 848 villagers died in the disaster.Before and after the three-minute tribute, rescuers including troops and medical workers continued to clear the debris, searching for bodies and spraying disinfectant in the area.Some survivors sat silently on the debris, still holding out hope that the bodies of relatives could be found.
