SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grieving son is speaking out after COVID-19 claimed its first local VA employee.John Martinez started feeling symptoms in early June. First, it was fatigue. Then came a fever and breathing troubles. His son Josh bought him a device to measure his oxygen levels. In mid-June, Josh's heart dropped when he read the device."His oxygen levels were below 80 and then dropped to 70. We got in our truck, took him straight to the hospital," said Martinez.John, an Army and Navy veteran, was taken to the VA Medical Center in La Jolla where he worked. For more than 15 years, he's maintained biomedical equipment like ventilators.When the pandemic started, he wanted to keep working."It was one of those things. The country needs him, so let's step up," said Martinez.A day after John was admitted, he found himself on one of the ventilators he knew so well. Soon after, his kidneys started to fail. His condition deteriorated quickly. More than a week ago, doctors allowed Martinez to visit."Just told him to fight, to keep fighting. I was crying. Just put my hand to the glass, trying to scream through the glass," said Martinez.Less than 2 days later, his father would pass away. John was set to retire after his birthday in late July, at the age of 63. Martinez isn't sure where his father contracted COVID-19 but other family members believe he got it while working."He wanted that benchmark of 63 to retire. He worked for so long and was looking forward to relaxation," said Martinez.Josh says he can only shake his head at the ongoing mask debate, and those who refuse to wear one."It's all good. Just put on your mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after being shot in Chollas View. According to police, the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near the 47th Street Trolley Station. 10News spoke to the victim's mother. She said her eldest son, Ricardo Dominguez was shot in the right hip. The bullet went through the main artery but missed his organs. She said Ricardo is now sedated at the ICU -- in serious but stable condition.Witnesses told police two cars were seen speeding from the area, but no word on whether or not the vehicles were involved in the shooting.Ricardo Dominguez's mother has set up a fundraiser page. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and ABC) - Fishermen had a close encounter with killer whales off the San Diego coast that was caught on camera. The group was on a 21-foot boat looking for yellowtail when they came across the orcas. "Out of nowhere, one of them popped up right next to the boat 3 or 4 feet away from me…landed, splashed me, and splashed the whole side of the boat. I screamed,” witness Nathan Benge told Good Morning America. One of the killer whales had a playful interaction, performing a belly roll beneath the surface of the boat’s wake, GMA reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car being pursued by the California Highway Patrol crashed in the Carmel Valley area early Friday morning.Around 12 a.m., CHP officers attempted to pull over a 2020 Toyota Camry for speeding on southbound Interstate5 near Del Mar Heights Road, but the driver refused to stop.Officers say the driver was traveling at 135 mph.The car tried to exit on Carmel Valley Road, but when the driver attempted to get back on the freeway, she lost control on the on-ramp and crashed.Officers took six women into custody from the car, including the driver.It's unclear why they chose to flee from CHP officers.Paramedics later responded to evaluate minor injuries. 681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Exercise has been one of the most effective stress relievers during the pandemic, but it has also been a challenge for some people to find a way to do it. That's where Mike Cothrine comes in. He started Mike's Fit Family about eight years ago to teach teachers free of charge about how to achieve a healthy body and healthy mind."A lot of these ladies had never exercised before in their life," he says. "A lot of them were just happy that somebody cared about them, cared enough to take care of them the way they take care of so many."The idea is to get teachers moving so they can do the same for their students.Mike says, "They started to really feel the power, and started feeling themselves and that energy translated to the kids."Preschool teacher Sofia Martinez who teaches at VIP Village Preschool in Imperial Beach has lived those positive effects."My stress levels were lower, it helped me sleep at night," and she says, "I went down from a size 12 to a size 6."Sofia says the kids love the workouts and while they catch on quickly, they're not the only ones."We saw the effects on the children in the classroom and then it was starting to trickle into the homes and the moms wanted to join," she says.Mike's approach is holistic. He also teaches stress relief and nutrition. When you meet him it becomes immediately clear why he's effective. He exudes energy and a half. He says his inspiration comes from his childhood in St. Louis. What his family lacked in means, they made up for in love. So with his fitness background, he wanted to give back to those who also lack the means.He says, "That's the core value of myself and my team, we love you up."Mike was traveling across San Diego county helping 20 different school district groups when the pandemic hit. So, in his can-do fashion, he took his classes virtual. Forty live virtual classes a week from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. He asks those who can to pay so he can continue to give to others who can't.
