SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Navy’s surgeon General is back home in San Diego talking about military healthcare reform.10News caught up with Vice Admiral Forrest Faison at after he spoke at the San Diego Military Advisory Council Breakfast in Point Loma.“We are changing how we do healthcare in the Navy to be one of the providers of choice,” he said. “Despite all the changes going on in military medicine right now, what will not change ever is our commitment to those we are privileged to serve.”Faison said there’s no greater responsibility than providing medical forces that are ready, prepared and present to save the lives of the nation’s armed forces.He said Naval Medical Center San Diego plays a big role when it comes to providing that training.Congress recently directed the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to take over the Military Health System (MHS). Meaning, all military medical centers across the national will soon be managed by DHA.Faison says this will be a smooth and transparent transition, and military families won’t be getting a big surprise.The Naval Hospital in Jacksonville transitioned from MHS to DHA last October, hospitals on the east coast are going through it now, and the west coast, including San Diego, is next.Faison said when it comes to military families having to switch healthcare providers so often, or wait a long time for appointments and referrals, the DHA is actively working to minimize changes and alleviate wait times.“The defense health agency is responsible for managing the Tricare network to ensure there are sufficient providers to be able to meet the needs and monitor access and wait times, so we rely very heavily on them to do that,” said Faison. “I know they’re working very closely with the Tricare contractors to be able to do that in all the different locations where we have service members and their families and we ask them to be stationed to do our nation’s business.”The transition in San Diego is expected to happen no later than October 2020. 2016

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The victim of a hit-and-run crash in South Park is calling for the City of San Diego to make streets safer. “It's been really difficult not being able to walk for seven weeks and having to be able to walk again, dealing with the side effects of the concussion and getting my brain working right,” said Vicki Granowitz. Surveillance video recorded one year ago shows Granowitz at the crosswalk of Grape and Fern streets. Before she can safely cross, a car hits her. Witnesses rushed to help as the car took off. Police later tracked down the driver, who pleaded guilty to the crash. Tuesday morning, Granowitz teamed up with Circulate San Diego for a news conference. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Californians gathered Saturday night across the state to protest the newest restrictions put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Last Saturday, Syndie Ly helped organize the first "Curfew Breakers" rally. "Across 16 cities, we had 10,000 people show up," she said.Ly lives in Huntington Beach and said in four days their Facebook page "blew up."She said people are frustrated by the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. saying it is an overreach, "when the government starts telling you when you can leave the house, how many people you can invite over to your own home."What's happening in the U.S. reminds her of when her family escaped in Vietnam."I was born in China and my parents emigrated to Vietnam, and we came here [to the U.S.] legally but we came here as refugees to escape North Vietnam during the fall of Vietnam ... Just being told what to do, a lot of the government overreach, I feel we're actually on the brink of getting back to that and that's why I'm involved in this," said Ly.She said between layoffs and businesses being forced to close, the impact on people's livelihoods is worse than the virus itself."It's our lives, and we feel we are responsible individuals that can make our own decisions," Ly said.The rallies will continue every Saturday, starting at 10:01 p.m. until Ly and the organizers see change, she added.In San Diego, a rally is planned for Saturday at 10:01 p.m. at 910 N.
