The attorney for the limousine company whose vehicle crashed in upstate New York on Saturday disputed statements from officials that the stretched Ford Excursion should have never been on the road.Prestige Limousine & Chauffer Service attorney Lee Kindlon said the state Department of Transportation conducted a periodic inspection last week and discovered "minor safety infractions" including inoperative or defective windshield wipers and a broken latch on a window.Both issues were fixed and, "as recently as last week they were told by the Department of Transportation that they could, that this vehicle was roadworthy and they could drive it," Kindlon said. "I am disputing that any recent failures of minor safety defects contributed to this crash," he said.State officials charged back, saying the vehicle was not allowed to be in service."The assertion that the limousine was cleared to be on the road following the September inspection is categorically false," said Joseph Morrissey, spokesman for the New York State Department of Transportation, in a statement. "The vehicle was subject to inspections and the owner was warned not to operate the vehicle; the vehicle was placed out of service."For reasons still unknown, the limo plowed through a stop sign in Schoharie and crashed into a parked SUV. The crash left 20 people dead, including the 17 passengers who rented the limo for a birthday party, two pedestrians and the driver.Federal, state and local investigators have flooded Schoharie to try to understand what caused the deadliest U.S. transportation accident in almost a decade. The birthday party for a 5-year-old Davenport, Iowa boy turned into one he’ll never forget when several officers from the Davenport Police Department accepted his invitation to attend.Jackie Martin took to Facebook to share the story of her son, Brayden, and his love for police officers. According to Martin, he loves everything about them, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when Brayden decided he wanted to have a police officer-themed birthday party this year.Brayden personally delivered invitations to the police station in hopes of getting to see a squad car.But what he got in return was so much more.Over the course of the day, seven different officers made their way to Brayden’s party. Syracuse University has suspended a professional fraternity after video footage surfaced showing members exhibiting "extremely racist" behavior, according to the university's chancellor.Videos purport to show members of Theta Tau, an engineering fraternity, repeatedly using racial slurs and simulating sex acts.Chancellor Kent Syverud called the behavior "offensive" in a statement to the campus community Wednesday. 425

Texas Governor Greg Abbott told KTSA radio on Monday that he plans to send nearly 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the US/Mexico border, after already committing to send 250 troops last week. The announcement came a week after President Donald Trump said he would send the National Guard to the border. Trump said the move was needed to help secure the border. Defense Secretary James Mattis said that up to 4,000 National Guard troops could end up staffing the border.The National Guard will work in a support role along the border, as troops are not allowed to make arrests or perform law enforcement functions. Abbott said troops along the border could be "in this for the long haul.”Troops from New Mexico and Arizona also will work the border. California has yet to commit troops to the border. Although Trump wants to bolster border security, it appears that illegal border crossings are down. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said that arrests at the border in 2017 were at a 46-year low. The decrease in arrests continues a nearly two-decade trend.  1112

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A 30-year-old man was forced to leave his parents’ home after they sued him for refusing to leave, according to KABC.The man, Michael Rotondo, was ordered to leave by a judge Tuesday. Rotondo’s parents say he would leave, despite several notices.The man argued that he wasn’t given enough time to leave, saying he should have been given at least six months.Rotondo’s parents claim they started giving him notices in February, even offering to give him more than ,000 to help him find a place.Rotondo said he took the money, but it wasn’t enough to find another place to live. Court filings show that Rotondo doesn’t contribute to the family’s expenses and doesn’t help out with chores.The man says he runs a “website business” and was forced to move home eight years ago after losing a job. 818
