(KGTV) - A local woman believes she was the target of a so-called "slider" targeting drivers at gas stations.Just past noon on Wednesday at the Arco on Jamacha Road, Blanca Maye finished filling up and then noticed a white sedan pull up next to her.Inside the car was a casually dressed man, about 30 years old. She said he glanced at her car a few times and that made her pause. She locked up her car, after collecting some trash from it.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood"I was walking toward the trash can, and I remember hearing someone grab my door handle," said Maye.She says when she looked back there he was: the same man right next to her door, quickly walking away toward the cashier.Upset, Maye stared at him and then drove away with her purse safely sitting on the floor of her car. Others haven't been so lucky.  Recently, police in the Los Angeles area sent out video of "sliders" in action: thieves pulling up - and while the driver is distracted - getting low and sneaking toward the car to steal valuables. Police warned these incidents on the rise in Southern California and the target is usually women who are alone."People don't expect this to happen at gas station. Social distancing is pushing more people waiting to vote beyond the limit some states have for keeping political persuasion away from the polls.Within a week of Election Day, hundreds of thousands of ballots have been cast in the 2020 general election, and long lines have stacked up outside of polling places across the country.Social distancing measures put in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus has stretched voters into longer lines, and security expert Doug Parisi, director of training with Safedefend, said the longer lines expose more people to potentially aggressive electioneers.States have various rules about how close to a polling place any political persuasion can be, some as close as 50 feet from where ballots are cast. Beyond that limit, electioneers can yell, wave signs, and try to influence voters as they approach the ballot box."The biggest thing COVID has done for us is that it has spread us out," Parisi said.He said the combination of political passions running high this year and large groups of voters on Election Day could create the recipe for emotional confrontations."There are organizations out there that have told their people to go vote early so you can express your voice on Election Day," Parisi said. "So there are plans to disrupt things."Parisi said people should do several things to prepare for a potential confrontation.First, he said to stay alert while waiting in long lines by regularly pulling your attention away from a phone or book and scanning the crowds."I don't mean just momentarily," he said. "I mean you actually have to make eye contact and break concentration."Read the crowd's emotions, keep an eye out for unusual packages or bags, know the neighborhood, and identify multiple exits out of any indoor polling location."In situations where there is a crisis, or something happens, God forbid, you need to have an alternative," he said.Parisi also advised voters not to engage with any electioneer.He said talking politics while waiting to vote wouldn't help anything, but, if you get into a situation where you're forced to talk with someone, it's OK to lie."If you need to tell something to somebody outside just to get them to agree with that, that's my advice," he said, "just go along to get along. Some city and state governments across the country have made wearing masks in public mandatory. Now, businesses are finding they also need to develop policies for face coverings."No pun intended but there’s no one size fits all here. Employers need to be looking at the state and local laws to determine whether masks are mandatory. I know that several states have mandatory mask requirements in public spaces, so of course they’ll want to look at those laws to make sure they're complying with them," says Amber Clayton, Knowledge Center Director for the Society for Human Resources Management.Clayton says employers will also need to consider employees who may not be able to wear a mask, whether it be for medical or other reasons."Employers may have to potentially provide a reasonable accommodation in those situations. That might look like allowing the person to work from home, taking leave or modifying their workspaces where they're working within an area that is maybe not as much public facing," says Clayton.For medical reasons, employers could require a doctor's note. Whether it's an employee handbook or company-wide email, employers should have some type of documentation so employees and any customers coming into the office are aware of expectations when it comes to wearing face coverings. Valerie Keels, who heads up her HR department at Gavi in Washington, DC, has developed a mask-wearing policy for her office."The building has imposed those restrictions, as well, in the common areas so when people come into the building they have to wear a mask. When they go into the elevator they have to wear a mask. So it's just consistent with what's going in the building," says Keels.Keels has what they call a "Code Red" which means people can come into the office if they register online. It helps them keep track of the number of people in the office space. Once they get to the office, their temperature is taken and they're given a mask to wear for when it's needed.When you're in an enclosed office space, you can take off your mask. "And even when you're at your own work space because we're also respecting social distancing," says Keels.As for enforcing a mask policy, some businesses could come across people who disagree with a face covering policy."Employers have the responsibility to keep the workplaces safe for their employees and if this is something that's required and the employee refused to wear it, then there needs to be something in place to address that - whether it's sending the employee home or providing leave, or making modifications to the worksite," says Clayton.It's important for employers to work with people and their individual situations before resorting to reprimands.
