BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovich expressed here Thursday the willingness to lift the friendly and cooperative China-Ukraine relationship to a new level.They also promised to strive to increase two-way trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2012. GUIYANG, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- China Wednesday called for the European Union to have a balanced, objective, comprehensive understanding of the world's largest developing country during an upgraded strategic dialogue held in the underdeveloped province of Guizhou.State Councilor Dai Bingguo told the EU side that despite rapid economic growth, China has no possibility to be arrogant, nor is it pretending to be a richer or poorer country than it actually is, with unfathomable strategic intentions, according to Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying."China expects the EU to treat itself as an equal," Dai was quoted by Fu as telling EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.The meeting was the fifth strategic dialogue between the two sides and the first since it was upgraded from vice foreign-minister level to its current level.China had made remarkable achievements since its reform and opening up to the outside, but it is still a developing country, Dai said.China has a clear understanding of its position in the international arena and its current level of development, Dai said, adding it will focus on economic development in the long run.China has not been, nor is, nor will be in the pursuit of hegemony, but adheres to the path of peaceful development, Dai said.China needs a peaceful international environment for development and its development will promote global peace and development, he said.Ashton echoed Dai, saying that the European Union should have a comprehensive understanding of China.The EU's view of China's development was one topic of the one-day closed-door meeting."It is one major aim of this strategic dialogue to enhance mutual understanding between China and the European Union. BEIJING, Aug. 31(Xinhua) -- China has cracked 278,000 criminal cases and broken up nearly 1,650 mafia-style gangs since it launched a campaign to maintain public security in rural-urban fringe zones and on campuses in January.About 256,000 suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday, according to a national working group on maintaining public security composed of officials from government agencies, including the Central Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Ministry of Public Security.Investigating and rectifying public security threats remains an arduous task, said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Commission.The government will maintain its "strike hard" policy against mafia-style gangs, crimes involving guns and explosives, gambling, prostitution and drugs, Wang said. Authorities have "zero-tolerance" for such crimes, he added.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced Monday that it would provide an additional 200 million yuan (29.4 million U.S. dollars) of humanitarian aid to flood-hit Pakistan for disaster relief and reconstruction.The Chinese government had previously given 120 million yuan in humanitarian relief to its neighbor, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu confirmed the 200-million-yuan aid on Monday evening."Chinese government has decided to provide 200 million yuan of humanitarian aid to support Pakistan," she said in a statement.As Pakistan's "close neighbor and all-weather friend," China would continue to support Pakistan's disaster relief and reconstruction efforts, said Jiang.Pakistan is still facing severe challenges in relief and reconstruction, and needs additional aid from the international community, she said.
