SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite pleas from health agencies to stay home during the holidays, millions of Americans are taking to the skies.A crowded airport and long-awaited hugs are exactly what health officials did not want to see this holiday season."The airport, I felt, was a little more crowded than expected," traveler David Miller said. "People apparently want to travel in spite of COVID."Whether it's to see an elderly family member, not break tradition, or make up for lost time, travelers packed the San Diego International Airport Thursday."They had to cancel Thanksgiving. They were coming home, and we didn't see them then, so we wanted to see them now," Miller's wife, Jan, said.Health officials have been warning for weeks that Christmas travel is like a 'Super Spreader' of the COVID-19 virus. Gatherings will cause a surge in the already short-staffed hospital systems, and that the death toll will increase. But even with the direst public health warnings, the TSA says around one million people have gone through their checkpoints every day since Dec. 18, 2020.Jan and David Miller flew into San Diego Thursday afternoon."I had concerns, probably greater than my wife, that perhaps flying wasn't a safe choice. However, my wife said I'd be living with a very depressed wife if we didn't come to see our children in California," Miller laughed. So it turned from a guilt trip to a Christmas trip. But the Millers say they are taking serious precautions."Our son thought maybe it would be safe for us to quarantine some and spend time apart from them in a separate location, so we're doing that in an Air BnB," David Miller said. They will first spend a little time away so that the rest of the time, they can enjoy all that San Diego has to offer together."The weather's a little bit more cloudy than what we're used to in San Diego, but obviously, it's much warmer than Ohio, where it is snowing right now," Miller said. 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frank Zamarron, 26, credits his Apple Watch for saving his life.“No warning signs, no pain no nothing,” Zamarron.  “All to know is that my Apple Watch started going off.”It was a Monday night in March, and his watch was alerting him something was wrong.“My heart-rate is elevated, and I'm just sitting at home watching TV relaxing from a long day at work,” he said. “After the fourth alert, I was like okay, something is not right. Time for me to a go to the hospital.”It was a decision that saved his life. It turns out, Zamarron contracted cellulitis, a skin infection, on his right leg. Soon after doctors started treating him, his leg began to blister.“Apparently your body is reacting to the infection trying to fight it off, doing everything it can, raising your heart rate,” Zamarron said. “They said it could have been fatal in a certain situation. Depending on how I treated it. Typically you would take pain pills or something and call it a day.”Zamarron spent seven days in the hospital.Doctors told him his weight might have contributed to the infection. Zamarron is now focused on staying active and getting healthier. 1223

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite skyrocketing prices, San Diego’s housing inventory is up in 2018, according to a new report by Trulia. The trend in America’s Finest City sits opposite the national trend, which is seeing a declining inventory. The national drop in inventory in the fourth quarter of 2018 was mainly driven by a drop in for-sale homes, however, in San Diego, the total for-sale inventory rose by more than 27 percent. San Diego’s trade-up inventory saw the largest increase at more than 46 percent. The report points out that, despite inventory gains in San Diego, prices continue to rise, outpacing wage growth. The trend places homeownership out of reach for many first-time homebuyers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348
