NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States will continue to pursue the common interest without being affected by the recent changes of the U.S. political landscape, said a U.S. scholar on Friday."There is a lot of consistency in China-U.S. relations. If you look back over time, whether it is Democrats or Republicans in the Congress or in the White House, China has always been an important country for the United States. Both countries will continue to pursue the common interest," said Elizabeth Wishnick, Research Associate at Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University. She told Xinhua in an interview that it would be difficult to see major changes occurring between U.S.-China ties after the U.S. midterm elections, because both countries share so many common interests in terms of preventing the nuclear proliferation weapons and reducing the problems of terrorism, etc."Keep in mind the long-term interests we share and the long history of cooperation we have, China and U.S. will find ways to move forward and have good possibility for future cooperation," she stressed.Wishnick admitted that it is a difficult time right now for U.S. and China, because "the economy is pulling both nations in different directions and no solution has been worked out yet to resolve the pressing economic problems that divide us.""It's a challenge for us to keep focus on what can be accomplished bilaterally, instead of getting too distracted by pressing current problems. If we could have better understanding of each other's domestic concern, it will help have less confrontational dialogue," she added. She regarded Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Obama's meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, as well as President Hu's coming visit in January, as good opportunities for two leaders to further deepen mutual understandings."It is a process of building trust. As long as they are able to discuss their differences, they have better chance to be able to address them more effectively," she said.

SEOUL, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to deepen economic and trade cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties with the United States in a "constructive manner", a senior official from China's Ministry of Commerce said here Thursday. At a press conference held Thursday evening, Yu Jianhua, director general of the International Trade and Economic Affairs Department of Ministry of Commerce, said China does not want to get into confrontation with the United States in trade and exchange rate issues, though its second round of quantitative easing will have great impact on China and other emerging economies."On the contrary, we are willing to deepen economic and trade cooperation with the United States in a constructive manner," said Yu, who is also a member of the Chinese delegation to the G20 Seoul Summit which opened Thursday evening. He said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also proposed to deepen the bilateral economic and trade cooperation during a meeting with U.S. President Barak Obama in New York last September."Therefore, much common ground can be found in the China-U.S. cooperation. I am optimistic on the future of the two countries' relations," Yu said. Yu also stressed that China hopes to deal with the trade and currency issues through dialogue. These issues should not be politicized or internationalized, and bilateral issues should not develop to a multilateral one. Otherwise the existing issues would become more complicated, he said.On Thursday afternoon, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with U.S. President Obama in Seoul, the host for the G20 Summit. The two heads of state exchanged in-depth opinions on the Sino-U.S. relations and common concerned international and regional issues, and reached consensus.Chinese delegation spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told the press conference that both the two leaders agree that boosting Sino-U.S. relationship to a higher level, against the backdrop of the profoundly changing international circumstances, will not only concern the two countries but also the future of the world.

BERLIN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with German President Christian Wulff on Friday to upgrade relations between the two countries.Li said China-Germany relations have been achieving new progress in recent years, particular last year when bilateral trade is expected to exceed 140 billion U.S. dollars, about one third of the total trade volume between China and the European Union (EU).Noting that China always views its ties with Germany from a long-term strategic point of view, Li said that his visit is aimed at further advancing the bilateral relations, which will face new opportunities in the new year.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (L) meets with German President Christian Wulff in Berlin, Germany, Jan. 7, 2011.The two sides should deepen cooperation in traditional areas, expand the scale of mutual investment and create sound environment for fair competition for enterprises, Li added. With Germany as China's largest source of technology in Europe, he said that it is beneficial for both countries and the world to see a combination of the German technology and the enormous Chinese market.Li said relations between Beijing and Berlin are of global significance, and that better coordination between China and Germany on important international and regional issues will also bring development and prosperity to the world. The German President said that his country attaches great importance to and admire China's development, which is viewed by Germany as an opportunity rather than a threat. He agreed that the two countries should strive for a closer strategic partnership based on mutual trust. Both China and Germany are playing important roles on issues like maintaining world peace, countering terrorism and improving international financial and monetary systems, Wulff said, adding that Germany is willing to strengthen cooperation with China on the world stage such as in the G20 (Group of 20 major economies). The German President also stressed the importance of cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries and said that the two sides should also strengthen cooperation in technology and innovation.Wulff said he is glad to hear that China has agreed to be the partner country of the Hanover Fair 2012, the world's biggest industrial fair. He said the trade fair will offer an opportunity for China to showcase its development, especially its clean energy technologies.Li responded that there is great potential for Sino-German cooperation in areas such as clean energy, adding that China wants to learn from Germany's advanced technology and management expertise and join hands with Germany to develop the new energy markets.China wants to use the opportunity of the Hanover Fair to strengthen high-tech cooperation with Germany, he added.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- On the last trading day of 2010, the Chinese currency, the yuan, strengthened to a record high for a second consecutive day, at 6.6227 per U.S. dollar, after 11 consecutive days of gains. The central parity rate of the currency, also known as the renminbi (RMB), was set two basis points stronger than Thursday's 6.6229, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading system.China's central bank announced on June 19 it would further reform the formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to improve its flexibility.

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough in spent fuel reprocessing technology that could potentially solve China's uranium supply problem, Chinese television reported on Monday. The technology, developed and tested at the No.404 Factory of China National Nuclear Corp in the Gobi desert in remote Gansu province, enables the re-use of irradiated fuel and is able to boost the usage rate of uranium materials at nuclear plants by 60 folds."With the new technology, China's existing detected uranium resources can be used for 3,000 years," the China Central Television reported.China, as well as France, the United Kingdom and Russia, actively supports reprocessing as a means for the management of highly radioactive spent fuel and as a source of fissile material for future nuclear fuel supply. This Dec 26, 2008 file photo shows a huge construction site of the expansion project of the two million-kw generating units in the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Haiyan, East China's Zhejiang province. But independent scientists argued that commercial application of nuclear fuel reprocessing has always been hindered by cost, technology, proliferation risk and safety challenges.China has 171,400 tonnes of proven uranium resources spread mainly in eight provinces -- Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Liaoning and Yunnan.China is planning a massive push into nuclear power in an effort to wean itself off coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel. It now has 12 working reactors with 10.15 gigawatt of total generating capacity.China has set an official target of 40 gigawatts (GW) of installed nuclear generating capacity by 2020, but the government indicated it could double the goal to about 80 GW as faster expansion was one of the more feasible solutions for achieving emissions reduction goals. As such, China will need to source more than 60 percent of the uranium needed for its nuclear power plants from overseas by 2020, even if the country moves forward with a modest nuclear expansion plan, Chinese researchers say.
