(KGTV) - Portions of Santa Barbara County were given mandatory evacuation orders, ahead of an approaching storm and possible mudslides.As of 12 p.m. Thursday, individuals near the Thomas, Sherpa and Whittier fire burn areas in Goleta, Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria were ordered to evacuate before 6 p.m.A flash flood watch has been issued for areas of Santa Barbara County affected by the Thomas, Whittier, and Sherpa fires starting at 9 p.m. and lasting until 9 a.m. Friday.The storm is expected to hit the Southern California region with moderate to heavy rainfall Thursday. Rains may generate mud and debris flows."The potential for debris flows being triggered is low to moderate. Waterway flows may be rapid and blockage and overtopping in waterways is expected. Roads may be flooded and impassable," a city release said. "People close to and immediately downstream of choke points may be endangered. It is important that community members understand the seriousness of the situation and follow the direction of authorities."TRAFFIC...Highway 101 will be used to facilitate the evacuations. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – California has confirmed its first openly gay justice to the state’s supreme court.Martin J. Jenkins made history Tuesday as he was confirmed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California. The appointment was approved by a unanimous vote in the supreme court courtroom in San Francisco.Justice Jenkins fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Ming Chin on Aug. 31, according to a press release from the state’s judicial branch.Along with being the state’s first openly gay justice, he’s also only the third African American man ever to serve on the court.The judicial branch says Jenkins has held several prominent state and federal judicial positions throughout his career, with his most recent being the governor’s judicial appointments secretary.Prior to his role with the governor, Jenkins served as an associate justice on the First District Court of Appeal from 2008 to 2019. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in 1997 and served on that bench until 2008.Jenkins earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law. 1180
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Three giant Northern California wildfires are still burning around the San Francisco Bay Area but the weather is giving firefighters a break. The National Weather Service has lifted a warning for dry lightning and gusty winds that could have fanned fires. Fire commanders are reporting more humid conditions and less wind Monday. Officials say six homeowners trying to check on their properties were surprised by fire and had to be rescued in a county south of San Francisco. The death toll has reached seven since the fires started and the lightning sparked fires have scorched more than 1,800 square miles across the state. 662
SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Marcos school is in mourning after their principal died suddenly over the weekend. According to a statement sent to 10News by the San Marcos Unified School District, Carrie Geldard, Principal of Discovery Elementary died over the weekend. The cause wasn’t immediately clear. “She served the SMUSD community in a variety of capacities over the last 22 years including teacher, assistant principal and principal. Carrie was fiercely passionate about developing the whole child, while also emphasizing literacy and ensuring that every student was successful and prepared for the future of their dreams,” the district said in part. In response to the death, the district says crisis response teams were sent to support students and staff. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Carrie’s family, the Discovery Elementary community and the San Marcos Unified School District community,” the district continued. 946
SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A man was killed after their pickup truck crashed into a brick wall early Wednesday morning.At about 2:56 a.m., a black Dodge Dakota pickup truck veered off of N. Las Posas Road, south of the intersection of Avenida Azul, crashed into a brick wall in the center median, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.SDSO investigators say it's unclear why the vehicle left the roadway.The 68-year-old male driver, who was the only person in the truck, was pronounced deceased at the scene.It's unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor. 566
