Actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are among a group of 11 wealthy parents expected in federal court on Wednesday as part of the college admissions scam. The defendants are each charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in what prosecutors called "Operation Varsity Blues." Authorities say the parents paid a college prep business to cheat on standardized tests and/or bribe college coaches in order to get their children into competitive universities. The hearing will be the first time the public hears anything of significance from Loughlin about her role in the scheme. Several brands have distanced themselves from the "Full House" actress and her daughter, 19-year-old social media influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli, since the charges were announced.Loughlin's husband, the fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, is also expected to appear in court Wednesday. Huffman's husband, the actor William H. Macy, is not charged in the case.CNN has reached out to representatives for Huffman, Loughlin and Giannulli but has not heard back.Of the 50 people charged in the case, so far four people have pleaded guilty or plan to plead guilty, according to prosecutors.Rick Singer, the mastermind of the scheme; Rudy Meredith, the Yale women's soccer coach who accepted a bribe to help a student get admitted; and Mark Riddell, who cheated for the students on the SATs and ACTs, are all cooperating witnesses for the prosecution. They have agreed to plead guilty and testify for the prosecution in exchange for a lesser sentence.John Vandemoer, the former Stanford sailing head coach, has also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit racketeering.Stanford, USC, Georgetown and other universities implicated in the scheme have said they are reviewing the admissions of students accused of participating in the scheme. Last week, Yale rescinded the admission of one student whose family had paid .2 million to gain entry under false pretenses. What the complaint saysLoughlin and Huffman are the best-known figures in the scheme, and the accusations against them explain how the admissions scam allegedly worked.Huffman is accused of paying ,000 to a fake charity associated with Rick Singer to facilitate cheating for her daughter on the SATs, the complaint says. She discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with Singer, the complaint says.Separately, Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly agreed to pay bribes totaling 0,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the University of Southern California crew team, easing their acceptance to the school. The daughters were recruited as coxswains even though they did not row competitively or otherwise participate in crew, the complaint says. The parents even sent Singer photos of each of their daughters on an ergometer, the rowing machine, the complaint states."I wanted to thank you again for your great work with [our older daughter], she is very excited and both Lori and I are very appreciative of your efforts and end result!" Giannulli allegedly wrote in an email to Singer included in the complaint.Additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN last week.Investigators are expecting to charge more than five others within four to six weeks, according to the official, who cautioned the investigation is ongoing and this is subject to change. 3466

A right-wing political action committee has taken credit for staging a viral video taken at a town hall meeting held by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, in which an attendee suggested that eating babies was a solution to the climate crisis. The video was taken Thursday at a town hall held by Ocasio-Cortez in her home district of Queens, New York. After asking the crowd for questions, a woman stood up and began speaking."We only have a few months left. I love that you support the New Green Deal, but it's not getting rid of fossil fuels. It's not going to solve the problem fast enough," the woman said. "A Swedish professor has suggested eating dead people, but that's not fast enough. So I think your new campaign slogan should be this: We have to start eating babies."The unidentified woman was eventually led out of the town hall. Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to the woman's suggestion but instead pivoted to fighting climate change. The video eventually got the attention of President Donald Trump. Trump retweeted a version of the video posted by his son, calling Ocasio-Cortez a "Wack Job." It's unlikely the president knew if a right-wing PAC claimed credit for the stunt. 1199

AKRON, Ohio — More than 200 Ellet High School students received their diplomas Friday night at Akron Civic Theatre in Ohio. Among them was an 87-year-old man getting an honorary diploma, 70 years after he left school for the military.Floyd Edward Hoskins, known to friends and family members as Ed, left Ellet High School in 1949 at age 17 to join the military.“Three years, three months, 19 days,” Hoskins said of his total time in the Army. During that time, he said, he was supposed to serve in Korea but was sent to Alaska for two years instead. When he came home, Hoskins said he initially had trouble finding a job but eventually landed one at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he worked for “44 years, four months, three weeks and one day.”Hoskins moved to Hawaii two years ago to live with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. His daughter-in-law, Cynthia Allen Hoskins, began doing some research into veterans’ benefits.“We are retired military, my husband and I,” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “And we were doing some research as far as our kids and their benefits in order to continue their college education.”She ran across information about the benefits the State of Ohio provides to veterans, where she learned her father-in-law might be eligible to receive his high school diploma. She inquired with his former school and found out he was eligible.“His reaction was kind of, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I really want to do this. It’s just a piece of paper,’ ” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “But after we explained to him, ‘Dad, you know, you really pushed education on us, we push it onto the grandkids. So why not?’ You know, if this is something that you deserve, go for it.”She said her father-in-law eventually came around to the idea.On Friday, when asked if he ever thought this day would come, Ed Hoskins said, “No, never.”“It’s an honor, but it’s scary,” he said, tearing up. “I’m not used to being in the limelight.”Decades older than his fellow graduates, Ed Hoskins received his diploma first, to loud applause. 2039

A shopping trip for school supplies at a Texas Walmart ended in tragedy for a mother who was fatally shot while shielding her infant son from gunfire, her aunt told CNN.Jordan Anchondo and her husband were shopping for school supplies after dropping off their daughter at cheer practice when a gunman opened fire in an El Paso shopping center, Elizabeth Terry told CNN on Sunday. The mother of three later died at a hospital after using her body to protect her 2-month-old son, Terry said. Her husband, Andre, is still missing, the aunt said."How do parents go school shopping and then die shielding their baby from bullets?" Terry said."The baby still had her blood on him. You watch these things and see these things and you never think this is going to happen to your family."Anchondo was one of at least 20 people killed after the gunman opened fire Saturday in what authorities are calling an act of domestic terrorism. It was the third mass shooting in the United States in a week -- and less than 24 hours later another deadly shooting spree in Dayton, Ohio, left nine dead.Families are still trying to identify loved ones. The baby was "pulled from under her body," said Terry, the sister of Anchondo's father, Paul, for whom the injured infant is named. The infant suffered broken fingers and is due to undergo an MRI, said Terry, who traveled from Sacramento after the shooting to be with her family in El Paso."My brother is devastated. We are just hoping and praying we find Andre alive. Any little hope that we can hold on to, that's what we are doing," Terry said. The first call of an active shooter went out at 10:39 a.m. local time, El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said. Around 2 p.m., Anchondo's relatives started calling each other, saying the couple was not answering their phones, Terry said. She died alone at the hospital because no one was able to immediately find her, her aunt said."It took us a while to confirm and identify her throughout all the chaos."Anchondo's father confirmed her identity. Now, the family is grieving the loss of a beloved mother, daughter and niece.Originally from Odessa, Texas, Anchondo loved being a mother to her children, Terry said. In addition to her two-month-old son, she had two children ages 5 and 2."She was light of the family. She had the most contagious smile and laugh," Terry told CNN."We lost the light of our family and the light of our heart. She would talk with anyone. She had a heart gold." 2471

A St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, family is questioning why a man is still in jail despite being acquitted on murder charges. Davien Bell was set free in October after he was acquitted in connection with a fatal shooting from March 2016, but shortly after he was released he was brought back into custody. Two months later he's still in jail. "He spent three years and eight months in prison..wrongfully," Bell's uncle Chanse Joubert said. Bell's family says those years are moments they can't get back. However, in October when Bell was set free they were hoping they could make new memories."He was free off all charges," Joubert said. "The next morning we received a phone call that he needed to go back to jail and be released properly." However, Bell hasn't been released. According to the District Attorney, he's being held on other pending charges. "On March 21, 2016 Damien Bell was arrested at the Yambilee building on theft and possession of an illegal firearm," Joubert said. "Two days later his father received a phone call that he needed to report to an interrogation station because they had evidence connecting him to the homicide." "He's been acquitted of murder charges and they're still detaining him based on something he allegedly did," Bell's mother Michelle Joubert said. "They could've handled that in court, during the three years he was there and they didn't."According to the D.A., it wasn't until after Bell's release that they realized he had pending charges. Jury selection for those charges is set for February. "He been in there for three years and eight months," said Bell's father David Wayne Bell Sr. "He missed a lot of holidays, friendships and everything. What they're doing is not justice.
