SAN DIEGO( KGTV) - A Navy veteran has earned a spot with Federal Fire San Diego, getting hired the day she graduated from the fire academy.More competitive, Federal Fire is the civilian department which oversees San Diego naval bases.After serving her country, rookie Caitlyn Argeris says she wanted to serve her community.“She was hungry for it, we saw the fire get lit, and we wanted to nurture that," said Chief Mary Anderson.While still on active duty, the young mother took EMT classes at night“I wasn’t sure if I’d be strong enough, fast enough, have the mental aptitude or physical capabilities," said Argeris. "But you push through it and keep going."Chief Anderson says Argeris is the second Navy veteran they've hired on the spot after graduation.Anderson is on a mission to recruit more women into her department. They're at 2 percent, compared to the national average of about 5 percent.“Women bring something unique to the fire service: compassion," said Chief Anderson. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. Officers are investigating the attack as a felony battery and robbery case.Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspects is asked to call SDPD’s Eastern Division at 858-495-7957 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A suspect was arrested in a 1970s-era killing in California after investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the Golden State Killer case, authorities said Thursday.John Arthur Getreu, 75, was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and strangling 21-year-old Janet Ann Taylor in March 1974, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announced.Taylor was last seen alive attempting to hitchhike from Palo Alto to her home in nearby La Honda. Her body was found along a busy street.Getreu was already in custody in Santa Clara County after being charged last year with sexually assaulting and strangling Leslie Perlov, another 21-year-old woman, in 1973.Investigators previously believed the killings of Perlov and Taylor were connected. But their cases had gone unsolved until DNA testing evolved enough to deliver credible results from the degraded DNA collected at both killing scenes.Authorities in both counties submitted DNA samples to the same publicly available DNA database used to identify Joseph DeAngelo, who authorities believe is the Golden State Killer.Getreu was linked to both killings after the testing connected him to both crime scenes, investigators said.In the Golden State Killer case, investigators used DNA from the attacks to locate a relative of DeAngelo then turned to traditional techniques to find the suspect.Authorities have linked the Golden State Killer to 13 attacks of women throughout California between 1974 and 1986."Law enforcement is not giving up on victims," Assistant San Mateo County Sheriff Gregory Rothaus said at a news conference on Getreu in Redwood City. "We have new DNA technology that is a great tool for us."Santa Clara County court records show Getreau is represented by the county's public defender's office, which didn't return a call.Getreau has not yet been appointed a lawyer in San Mateo County. 1910

She was appointed in 2018. During her speech she said, “I know I stand here as first woman to serve as permanent president to lead this university, but I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of women who have shaped the identity of SDSU from the very beginning”. (KGTV) - A new group of leaders has the California GOP ready to take on the 2020 elections and rebound from a disastrous 2018 cycle.Over the weekend, the GOP elected Jessica Patterson as their state-wide Chair. She's the first woman and first Latina to ever hold the top spot in the state party.They also elected a Taiwanese immigrant, Peter Kuo, as Vice-Chair. And the new Treasurer, Greg Gandrud, is openly gay.Analysts say that gives them a more diverse group of leaders that can reach out to more voters across the state.But newly elected Secretary Randy Berholtz, who lives in San Diego, says their election within the party had nothing to do with demographics."I think what the delegates did is pick the best person for each of the positions," Berholtz says. "It just so happens that the people were of different ethnicities and sexes and ages and everything else."Berholtz says he saw an energized party at the convention, ready to bounce back from 2018.In that election, Republicans lost 7 seats in the US House of Representatives. Loses in local legislative races also gave democrats a super-majority in the California House and Senate. Republicans only hold 19 or 80 seats in the House and 11 of 40 seats in the Senate.The election also continued a streak of no Republicans winning statewide office since 2006.Berholtz says a strong Republican party is a good thing for the state."California needs to have a good second party," he says. "If not, nobody's watching the party in power. And we want to tell the voters that we're watching."In the last election, Republicans only made up 24% of the registered voters. That put them behind Democrats and people who registered as "No Preference."Political analyst John Dadian says it could take as long as 10 years for the GOP to turn that around."The main strategy has to be to bring some of those, 'prefer not to state' voters back," says Dadian. "It's all in the messaging, because California isn't just a blue state, it's a deep-blue state."Berholtz says his party will use a focus on family, personal initiative and good government to turn the tide. He also says they'll look to a more grass roots campaign to try and elect leaders from the bottom-up."We're energized right now," he says. "We're all going out and speaking, finding great candidates, doing voter registration, improving our message and just telling people in California that there is a viable alternative and we have not given up on you." 2489
