SAN DIEGO — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A life science development firm has unveiled plans to transform eight acres along San Diego's waterfront into a mixed-use hub that could attract numerous leading edge companies to the city.Development firm IQHQ announced Monday that it closed on the site along Harbor Drive and will break ground on the project's first phase this week. The firm says it has entitlements and key permits for new office, lab and support retail space for the complex, called the San Diego Research and Development District, or RaDD. In a news release, the firm said this would be the largest urban commercial waterfront site along the Pacific Coast. The development is sure to bolster an already vibrant life sciences industry in San Diego, with biotechs clustered mostly in the Torrey Pines area. This could attract more to relocate downtown. The project would be the third major commercial development in downtown, along with the Padres plan to build office space at Tailgate Park, and the redevelopment of Horton Plaza into a tech hub."This is probably, in terms of the commercial sector, the most important pivotal moment in San Diego's modern redevelopment history," said Gary London, of commercial real estate consulting firm London Moeder Advisors.IQHQ chief executive Stephen Rosetta told ABC-10News this was the premier site to build on the west coast, if not the entire USA. "This project is really special to us because we're headquartered here in San Diego, and the partners live locally and have for most of our lives," he siad. IQHQ bought the property from Manchester Financial Group for undisclosed terms. Manchester Financial recently completed the new U.S. Navy Headquarters, on the north end of the site, with move-ins scheduled for October. SAN DIEGO — The main stretch of Avenida de la Playa in the La Jolla Shores area is closing to vehicles through September so restaurants can set up tables out on the asphalt.Restaurants began setting up Wednesday for the outdoor service, which will run through Sept. 27. The change comes in response to a new round of Coronavirus related restrictions that make it illegal for restaurant to serve food indoors. Avenida de la Playa will close to cars from El Paseo Grande to Calle de la Plata. Restaurants will be setting up in the part of the street that was reserved for parking spaces. There will be a 20-foot wide walkway down the center of the road for pedestrians to pass. The move will allow restaurants that lost capacity due to restrictions a chance to add tables. Piatti, for instance, will get 16 additional tables by moving outside, creating 35 new shifts for its workers."I've been here 29 years and I've been able to tell people I'll have something in an hour, I'll be able to seat you in 90 minutes. Those are extreme wait times. and now I'm actually saying for the first time ever, I don't have anything tonight," said Piatti General Manager Tom Spano. (KGTV) -- A mother of three, nearly killed when a great white shark bit her in April, is paying it forward after countless people donated tens of thousands of dollars to help with her medical bill and living expenses while she recovers.Leeanne Ericson of Vista was the guest bartender Monday evening at Cassano’s in San Clemente.It was originally a fundraiser for Ericson. SAN DIEGO — Sisters Pizza on the edge of Hillcrest just celebrated its one-year anniversary. The party wasn’t exactly what owner Emily Green Lake had in mind. "We're not constantly doing refills, bringing them condiments the way that we used to,” she said. “Salt and pepper shakers are a thing of the past. I don't know that we'll ever see those again.” About two weeks ago, county restaurants got the green light to once again host guests. While Lake doesn't have to, she is keeping the dining room closed to the public for safety reasons. Instead, she opened eight of the 22 tables on her front patio, spaced out for social distancing. “It's nice to see people back there, but it's sad to think of the opportunities that my business is missing out on,” Lake said. Still, not every restaurant is hosting guests . Some are opting to stay take-out only for the time being. The ones that have opened up, however, are finding limited takers. New reservation data from Open Table shows seated dining in San Diego is down about 80% from this time a year ago. One reason: only about 45 percent of the restaurants in Open Table’s network are even taking reservations. “Just because we've had to open the economy doesn't mean that there is no coronavirus anymore, and I think that's where people are coming from when they don't want to be among the masses,” Lake said. Lake said while delivery is up, overall sales are down 40%. And to make it harder, she's spending 80 cents per order on disposable plates and utensils. Lake said she has been able to keep all of her 14 workers, but that their hours have been cut. Normally, around this time year, Lake would have hired twice as many people.
