BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Pudong Development (SPD) Bank said its first-half-year net profit rose 33.92 percent from one year earlier due largely to lending boom and increased commission fees.Net profits climbed to 9.08 billion yuan (1.34 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months of this year, the Shanghai-based lender said in a statement filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange late Sunday.Its growth in profits stemmed from rising operating revenues, a result of growing net interest earnings, increased fee incomes and the improved quality of assets, according to the statement.Earnings per share stood at 0.791 yuan, up 20.21 percent from one year earlier. Also, operating revenues grew 36.42 percent to 22.75 billion yuan in the first half of 2010, it said.Total assets for the commercial bank hit 1.781 trillion yuan by the end of June, up 9.77 percent from the end of 2009.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai said Tuesday that China was willing to enhance energy dialogue and cooperation with other nations.China attaches great importance to energy-saving and environmental protection while striving to achieve a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development of energy, Ma said during a meeting with some participants of the 2010 China International Energy Forum in Beijing.The participants included Pierre Gadonneix, chairman of the World Energy Council, and Randall Gossen, president of the World Petroleum Council.Ma said China's energy consumption mainly depended on domestic supply. Meanwhile the country was an active participant in international energy cooperation.Gadonneix said the forum would pay more attention to the issue of energy development and environmental protection, enhance diversity and inclusiveness of the event, and contribute to the world's sustainable development.

TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' chief climate change negotiator applauded China on Monday for its efforts in dealing with the challenge of climate change, saying she was impressed by the determination of the Chinese people and their government.Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), made the remarks in China's northern city of Tianjin at a welcoming reception held by the Chinese government.A new round of UN climate talks is being held in the port city on Oct. 4-9 in preparation for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico."Here in Tianjin, I have seen much evidence of determination," said Figueres."(I saw the) determination of the government of China to reduce their CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by up to 45 percent by 2020, (and the) determination of the people of China to turn China into the world's leader in renewable energy technology and to find a visionary balance among economic development, poverty eradication and climate protection."Figueres also praised the host city, saying, "(I saw the) determination of the government of Tianjin, China's fourth-largest city, to be a model city for the circular economy, a pilot city for low-carbon growth and an exemplary city for sustainable development.""A striking example is the Tianjin Eco-City project between Singapore and China and with significant private sector investment, which will provide eco-friendly housing for some 350,000 people," she added.More than 3,000 delegates from 177 parties and observer states and over 200 non-governmental organizations are attending the Tianjin gathering, the final one prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.Figueres concluded her speech at the reception with a Chinese proverb, "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng," which means "With everyone's determination, we can do anything." SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four Japanese are being investigated in China for having entered a military zone without authorization and illegally videotaped military targets in northern Hebei Province, local state security authorities said Thursday.The state security authorities in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei, have taken measures against the four people according to law after receiving a report about their illegal activities.The authorities only gave one name of the four Japanese nationals, Sada Takahashi."Currently, the case is being investigated," the state security authorities in Shijiazhuang said in a statement.No further details were provided.

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- China and Ukraine have agreed to boost economic and parliamentary cooperation after their leaders met in Beijing.Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych Friday."The pressing task is to identify major projects for cooperation and give full play to business, research and financial institutes," said Wen.Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, meets with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich (L) in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 3, 2010."By doing so, we will make headway in economic and technological cooperation and promote economic recovery and sustainable growth," he said.Yanukovych said his country hopes to fully utilize the cooperation committee at the vice-premier level they agreed upon to establish advanced cooperation in various fields.During his meeting with Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), Yanukovych discussed parliamentary exchange between the two countries."The documents signed between the two countries, including the joint statement, show the political willingness to boost parliamentary exchange," Yanukovych said.China hopes to enhance communication between parliamentary leaders and committees in legislature, supervision, trade and culture, Wu said.Yanukovych praised China's efforts maintaining reform, development and stability, saying his country looks forward to further discussions with China on governance.Yanukovych arrived in Beijing Thursday for a four-day state visit and has so far witnessed the signing of a joint statement to upgrade friendly cooperative relations in a comprehensive way.According to an agreement signed by the two sides, Chinese companies will undertake the construction of a 950-million-U.S.-dollar city rail line in Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine.Yanukovych will fly to Shanghai Saturday to attend the 2010 World Expo.
