After multiple news outlets projected that Democrats would take control of the House of Representatives, President Trump called House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in a show of bipartisanship, CNN reports.Trump's call came just hours after White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders indicated to pool reporters Tuesday that Trump would not reach out to Pelosi (D-California)."I'm not sure why you would call Nancy Pelosi considering a lot of people in her own party have said they wouldn't support her," Sanders told pool reporters. "If Democrats win tonight, I think we need to wait and see who their speaker is."Trump attacked Pelosi repeatedly while stumping for Republican House candidates in the lead-up to the midterm elections.A number of Democrats have distanced themselves from Pelosi since 2016. Following the 2016 election, Pelosi faced a challenged from Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) for House Minority leader. 950
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The man who killed John Lennon in 1980 says he was seeking glory and deserved the death penalty for a "despicable" act. Mark David Chapman made the comments last month to a parole board before it denied him parole for an 11th time. The now 65-year-old inmate expressed remorse for gunning down the former Beatle. Chapman called his actions "creepy" and "despicable." He said he thinks all the time about the pain he inflicted on Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono. The board said it found his statement that "infamy brings you glory" disturbing. Chapman will be up for parole again in August 2022. 614

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is urging travelers from eight additional states to self-quarantine for 14 days as it awaits a decision on the reopening of indoor dining in New York City. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a television interview that he plans to send state police and health and liquor officials to New York City on Tuesday night ahead of his decision expected Wednesday. Last week, Cuomo and counterparts in New Jersey and Connecticut announced a travel advisory requiring people from states with "increased prevalence of COVID-19" to quarantine for two weeks. That advisory applies to states with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents, or a test positivity rate higher than 10%.Tuesday, California, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, and Tennessee were added to New York’s travel advisory. Those states join Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. The Democratic governor said he’s worried by reports that dining in closed, indoor areas with air-conditioned systems could lead to spikes in COVID-19. Cuomo has warned that those out-of-state travelers could lead to a rise in infections. 1185
A worldwide study of the coronavirus released in the journal Cell indicates that the dominant strand of COVID-19 is causing the virus to spread faster. But the study’s authors said that even though the coronavirus is able to spread faster, the virus is no more or less severe than earlier in the outbreak. The study’s authors indicate that the virus has mutated, and that the Spike protein amino acid D614G has become the virus’ dominant strand.“Our global tracking data show that the G614 variant in Spike has spread faster than D614. We interpret this to mean that the virus is likely to be more infectious,” study author Bette Korber of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The federal government’s leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci addressed concerns that the virus could be more contagious in an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association on Thursday.“The data is showing there’s a single mutation that makes the virus be able to replicate better and maybe have high viral loads,” Dr. Fauci said. “We don’t have a connection to whether an individual does worse with this or not; it just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible.”Korbe explained in the study how the dominant strand of the virus differs from earlier variants.“In infected individuals G614 is associated with lower RTPCR cycle thresholds, suggestive of higher upper respiratory tract viral loads, although not with increased disease severity,” Korbe said. “These findings illuminate changes important for a mechanistic understanding of the virus, and support continuing surveillance of Spike mutations to aid in the development of immunological interventions.”To read the full study, click here. 1731
