The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted businesses and industries around the country as unemployment rates are at historic highs and many are wondering how and when our economy will recover."One of the biggest impacts is going to be on workers' wages. They’re not going to recover for years. So we’re going to see zero wage increases probably for several years moving forward more than the Great Recession (of 2008 and 2009) because this hit was more than the Great Recession," says Jack Strauss, the Chair of Applied Economics at the University of Denver.Strauss predicts wages will likely stay stagnant in almost all industries. In some cases, some people will see their wages go down."This is the first time many are being cut. University of Arizona, University of Denver, where I’m from, and other universities, we have had wage cuts of 5-10%. Didn’t happen in 2008; we were frozen. But this is the first time 5-10%" says Strauss.In California, the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board works to help businesses find qualified workers and the unemployed find their next job. Executive Director Blake Konczal says he doesn't expect people to start to really look for another job until unemployment benefits run dry. But once they do, there will be a mad dash for any available jobs."When you’re looking for work, when unemployment is that rampant, the question regrettably isn’t, ‘Why aren’t I getting a higher wage?’ People want a wage," says Konczal.The good news, though, is that economists don't expect the cost of living to increase much.“Because wages have been low, demand has been low, so the cost of living has only gone up gradually," says Strauss.But with high unemployment and few wage increases, people will likely be spending less."That negative effect will be moving forward in a lot of industries relying on discretionary items because you're still going to buy food, because that’s a necessity, but you’re not going to go on a vacation, you’re not going to buy a new car," says Strauss.Konczal is worried about how this economic downturn will affect small businesses…“And the people who worked for them,” Konczal said. “In nine out of 10 times those types of businesses are the strength of our economy, sets us apart. But in this particular quixotic COVID environment, they’re the ones who are really getting hammered."Even before the pandemic, experts say there was still a high demand for qualified employees. The calendar is about to flip from April to May, and normally storm chasers are flooding Tornado Alley to get a glimpse at the power of Mother Nature. But so far in 2018, there has not been much to chase. According to the National Weather Service, the state of Oklahoma, which is in the heart of Tornado Alley, has gone the entire year so far without a single confirmed tornado touchdown. Not since before 1950 has Oklahoma gone the first four months without a single tornado touchdown. By the end of April, the state would have averaged 17 tornado touchdowns. Last year, 13 tornadoes had touched down by the end of April. In 2016, there were 27 touchdowns in the month of April alone. In 2012, there were 54 confirmed touchdowns in April. The state of Kansas has also gone the entire year without a tornado. According to National Weather Service data, the state averages 12 tornadoes in the month of April alone. "On the whole, across the United States, we have seen around half the number of eyewitnessed tornado reports that we would normally expect by this time of year," Dr. Patrick Marsh, a meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center, told CNN. Meteorologists are blaming, or crediting, a jet stream pattern that has sent big snow storms into the Upper Midwest for the decreased number of tornadoes. The pattern has prevented warm moist air from setting up in the Plains, which has cut off any fuel for potential tornadoes. According to the Storm Prediction Center, the upcoming weekend appears to void of any major severe weather outbreaks. The Department of Justice said Monday that an NYPD officer had been arrested and charged with allegedly acting as an "illegal agent" for the Chinese government.In a statement released Monday, the DOJ said that in addition to illegal agent charges, 33-year-old Baimadajie Angwang has also been charged with committing wire fraud, making false statements and obstructing an official proceeding.The DOJ alleges that Angwang was providing information about Chinese citizens in the New York area to the government of the People's Republic of China. He was also allegedly "developing intelligence sources within the Tibetan community."According to Scripps station WPIX in New York, Angwang is a Tibetan native and resident of Long Island. He worked in the NYPD's 111th precinct in Queens and was also employed by the U.S. Army Reserve as a staff sergeant.Angwang initially arrived in the U.S. on a cultural exchange visa. Once that visa was renewed, he overstayed the length and later claimed asylum "on the basis that he had allegedly been arrested and tortured" in China due to his Tibetan heritage.A complaint alleges that Angwang has worked under the control of the Chinese government since 2014. He allegedly told his Chinese government handler that he wanted to be promoted within the NYPD "so that he could assist the PRC and bring 'glory to China.'""As alleged in this federal complaint, Baimadajie Angwang violated every oath he took in this country. One to the United States, another to the U.S. Army, and a third to this Police Department," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. The European Union is to propose ending twice-yearly clock changes after a large-scale public survey, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Friday.According to Juncker, more than 80% of EU citizens want to abolish daylight saving time and instead remain on the time used during summer instead.At the moment, each EU member state puts clocks forward one hour on the last Sunday of March and back again on the last Sunday in October."This debate about summertime, wintertime has been around for many years here," Juncker told German broadcaster ZDF."Many people are contributing to this debate. We did a survey, a public survey. Millions responded and think that in the future we should have summertime all year round. The College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl is moving to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff, made the announcement in a statement Saturday night on the eve of the release of the final playoff rankings.The College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl "mutually agreed" to move the game because of the growing number of coronavirus cases in Southern California."We are pleased that parents and loved ones will now be able to see their students play in the game," Hancock said.The move came after several coaches expressed their dismay about possibly traveling to the Rose Bowl to play in a game where players' families wouldn't be allowed.Los Angeles County is under a stay-at-home order that took effect earlier this month. Pasadena, home to the Rose Bowl, has its own public health department but has mostly followed the county's practices during the pandemic.A source told The Associated Press that the Rose Bowl sought an exemption from the state of California to allow families to attend but was denied twice.Hancock said the game will still be played in the mid-afternoon on New Year's Day."We are very grateful to Rose Bowl officials and the city of Pasadena," Hancock said. "They have worked hard to listen to the concerns of the CFP, the teams that might have played there, and their state and government officials.
