SIGNAL HILL (CNS) - A single-engine airplane made a safe landing on a street near Long Beach Airport today, with no injuries reported.The airplane, which had just taken off from the airport, set down about 10:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of Orange Avenue, said airport spokeswoman Cassie Chauvel.The Long Beach Fire Department said in a Twitter posting that the plane ``lost power shortly after performing a touch and go off runway 26L.''The pilot was unhurt, and there was no damage to the plane, according to the LBFD.The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the pilot was the lone occupant of the Piper PA28. 625

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist.The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins.But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Social media has changed how campaigns reach voters before an election. It has also changed how news is spread.Websites known as “pink slime” organizations use computer-generated algorithms to produce content. These sites, unlike traditional news outlets which are funded by advertisements or subscriptions and maintain an editorial protocol, are generally funded for the purpose of promoting an agenda.The Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University found in late 2019 a total of 450 websites it described as “pink slime” organizations. Of these, 189 were designed in a way to appear to be local news outlets.The Tow Center said in 2020, that number has grown considerably to over 1,000 such sites.While many local newspapers have folded in recent years, the opportunity for news stories driven by algorithms to get traction with a community has grown.A New York Times investigation spotlighted groups such as Metric Media, Locality Labs, Newsinator, Franklin Archer and Interactive Content Services. These organizations run hundreds of sites that appear to look like traditional news outlets.“It is becoming an increasingly common campaign strategy for PACs and single-interest lobbyists to fund websites that borrow credibility from news design to help advance particular agendas,” according to a report by the Tow Center. “The proliferation of politically-funded local news sites across the political spectrum raises questions about how these entities represent themselves to the public, and how they are categorized by search engines and social platforms.”Adding to the concern of these outlets, according to the Tow Center, is that 90% of these stories are “algorithmically generated using publicly available data sets or by repurposing stories from legitimate sources.”The remaining 10% of these stories?“Many of the stories are directed by political groups and corporate P.R. firms to promote a Republican candidate or a company, or to smear their rivals,” according to a New York Times report.Not only are these sites growing while a number of legitimate news outlets are struggling to stay open, but they are increasing during an era of misinformation.Just last week, the FBI and intelligence community officials warned Americans of growing foreign influence in US elections. These foreign actors, according to leaders from the FBI and national intelligence agencies, say misinformation is being weaponized in hopes of influencing the election.And with misinformation spreading on the internet, trust in the news media as a whole has dropped significantly in recent years. According to Gallup polling, the number of Americans who say they trust the news had dropped from 72% in 1976, to a low of 32% in 2016. More recent polling places the proportion of Americans who trust the media at 40%.But one area of the media that Americans say they trust is their local news. In 2019, 67% of Americans said they can trust their local paper, which is up from 61% in 1998. Gallup also found last year that 74% say they trust their local TV news, and 65% say they trust their local radio news, both up slightly from 1998.While most Americans trust their local news, according to Penny Abernathy, nearly 1,800 local newspapers have closed since 2004. Worse, Abernathy told Poynter that these closures have created “news deserts” in small communities.“And when you lose a small daily or a weekly, you lose the journalist who was gonna show up at your school board meeting, your planning board meeting, your county commissioner meeting,” Abernathy told Poynter.With local newspapers getting the ax across the US, these pink slime sites have been able to take advantage of the credibility of local outlets, even though their reporters are not local to the areas they serve, and that’s assuming the story was not written by a computer.The Tow Center published a list of these so-called pink slime sites. SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- The health department is investigating, and an employee has been fired after a customer received raw chicken from a Dairy Queen in Southport, Indiana.Zach Cruse said he picked up some food at the drive-thru at the Dairy Queen off Southport Road just before the restaurant closed around 10 p.m. Friday night.When he got home, he realized he didn’t exactly get what he had ordered.“I got a couple bites in and was like, this doesn’t taste right,” said Cruse. “I looked at it – ripped it open and realized it was completely raw.”Dairy Queen says after receiving the complaint from Cruse they immediately contacted the Marion County Health Department. They also fired the employee involved because they say they failed to check the temperature of the cooking chicken before serving it.The Marion County Health Department said they investigate every complaint they receive, and they plan to go out and check the restaurant’s procedures to see if there are any issues with their food preparation process.“I just don’t want somebody else to eat raw chicken and I don’t want to eat raw chicken,” said Cruse. “If it happened at Dairy Queen, how much gross food have I eaten that I’m not aware of because I just have trusted that the food I’m going to get is going to be safe?” 1304

Staff members at JP Morgan Chase came back from the Labor Day weekend to an email allegeding some employees and customers of the large bank may have acted in ways “that does not live up to our business and ethical principles — and may even be illegal,” according to a company memo obtained by multiple media outlets.The bank’s operating committee, led by CEO Jamie Dimon, sent the email Tuesday morning. It talked about how the pandemic has brought out the best in many workers, however there have been instances where, the company believes, customers have abused the government’s coronavirus relief programs.“This includes instances of customers misusing Paycheck Protection Program loans, unemployment benefits and other government programs. Some employees have fallen short, too,” the memo reads, according to CNBC.JP Morgan Chase has issued nearly 300,000 loans, for a total of almost billion under the Paycheck Protection Program, according to ABC News.No further details about what kind of “misuse” or unethical behavior the bank is citing. They only said they are working to “identify those instances, and cooperate with law enforcement where appropriate.”Accusations of fraud or otherwise problematic loans have come up all summer.
