SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California continue to rise sharply as prices throughout the rest of the U.S. continue to fall. According to GasBuddy, the national average is down two cents, currently costing .65 per gallon. In California, the average as of Sunday is .98 per gallon and could hit by late Sunday or Monday, GasBuddy says. In San Diego County, the average price per gallon has increased by more than 40 cents over the last 13 days, AAA reports. The jolting increase in gas prices is a result of lower supplies caused by maintenance issues at several California refineries. The issues are reportedly affecting the Chevron and Marathon refineries in Los Angeles County at the same time. It's unclear when normal operations will resume. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite not being on the state's watch list, San Diego County leaders warn it could be a matter of days before the region joins 19 other counties being monitored for rising coronavirus cases.Wednesday, County leaders and health officials mapped out the path that will result in the county avoiding or making California's County Monitoring List. "We have to really recommit and refocus ourselves to adapting to the reality we face," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.Under the state's metrics, counties are placed on the list after any one of the following thresholds is met for three days in a row:Average number of tests per day is less than 150 per 100,000 residentsCase rate over 14 days per 100,000 residents is greater than 100 cases OR greater than 25 cases with a 7-day percent of testing positivity equal or above 8%Greater than 10% increase in three-day average of COVID-19 hospitalized patientsLess than 20% of ICU beds available or less than 25% or ventilator availableSan Diego County crossed the case rate metric on June 30 with 105 cases per 100,000 residents. Here are San Diego County's numbers as of Wednesday: 1152

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Major Leaguer Jacque Jones grew up in Southeast San Diego, and is giving back to the community. He has started an organization called "All Hands on Deck," and it's about grooming kids from his neighborhood for success, whether it's on the baseball field or in the classroom. Jones played 10 season's in the MLB but says his foundation was set during his days at San Diego High School."San Diego High turned out to be the right experience and the best experience for me to further my career in baseball," said Jones. But his major league dreams came long before he was a Caver, saying, "I knew at 5 years old I was going to be a big leaguer," he added. He went on to play at USC and was also a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and would play for four major league organizations in his career."Yes, we won a bronze medal, which I say was disappointing, but I'm blessed in the same token because not that many people can say they won an Olympic medal," Jones said, saying of his time in the MLB, "I enjoyed it and I played hard every day. I was very grateful that I was blessed to be able to play in the big leagues."Bringing him to his new venture."Percentages for African American players is down to about 4%, which was 38% at its height. I want to do something about it, and this is what 'All Hands on Deck' is about. We all need to put our hands on these kids from the neighborhood I grew up in, to make sure they have a chance to be successful," Jones said.On Nov. 21, Jones plans to donate turkeys to San Diego High School families, as well as families in the surrounding area. He will also be holding an auction to raise money for his organization."I want to start this program to get kids back to playing baseball because it's a beautiful sport," he says. 1835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue. The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout. He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers. He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323
