BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged Israel and Palestine to stay on the path of peace talks and take constructive moves to advance their stalled peace talks.Wen made the appeal in a message to the Conference in Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.Offering warm congratulations for the event on behalf of the Chinese government, Wen stressed that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.The Chinese government has all along firmly supported the Palestinian people's just cause of restoring their legitimate national rights, and the efforts to continuously push the Middle East peace process forward, Wen said.The talks between Israel and Palestine have now reached a pivotal stage, he said, voicing the hope that both sides will stay on the track,take positive and constructive efforts, avoid any disturbance of the talks, cooperate with international mediation efforts, and constantly promote the negotiation process.He expressed the hope that on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, an independent Palestinian State with full sovereignty will be established and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and the Palestinian State will be achieved.An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is the expectation shared by all Middle East countries and peoples and the international community, Wen said.As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will as always support the United Nations in playing a vital role on the Middle East issue, he said.He added that China, along with the international community, will continue to make unremitting efforts to seek a just solution to the Palestinian issue and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East.The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on Friday ordered local governments to begin a campaign to inspect projects under construction to eliminate safety risks in the wake of recent fire accidents.Local authorities should work on "effective prevention of accidents" and improve safety, especially in winter when fire and gas poisoning accidents tend to be more frequent, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Special monitoring should be undertaken of reconstruction work and of projects involving the expansion of existing buildings, it said, urging a "serious" crackdown on illegal practices during building operations, according to the statement.The notice followed the call from the State Council on Wednesday demanding tougher fire prevention measures, after a blaze Monday gutted a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai, killing at least 58 people, and another fire engulfed a 99-year-old building at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Nov. 13.

NAIROBI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Jointly set up by China and Africa in October 2000, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has made abundant achievements in the last decade, boosting the development of the new type of China-Africa strategic partnership in an all-round and tangible way.The FOCAC, a collective consultation and dialogue mechanism between China and African countries, is the first of its kind in the history of China-Africa relations. It is a major future- oriented move taken by both sides in the context of South-South cooperation to seek common development in the new situation.Besides four ministerial meetings, the forum held a summit in November 2006 in Beijing, when Chinese President Hu Jintao and his African counterparts agreed unanimously to building "a new type of strategic partnership featuring political equality and mutual trust, economic win-win cooperation and cultural exchanges". It is an important milestone and beacon for the China-Africa relation development in the new times. The Chinese government has fully implemented the eight initiatives of assistance developed at a series of ministerial conferences and particularly at the Beijing Summit. Moreover, a new set of eight initiatives has been launched since the 4th Ministerial Conference of FOCAC last year.With a prosperous FOCAC, China-Africa relations registered considerable progress in all sectors. During the decade, Chinese President Hu Jintao paid six visits to Africa. With its contribution, China-Africa relations have entered a new stage of fast, comprehensive and stable development.The first FOCAC ministerial conference, held in Beijing in October 2000, was aimed at addressing globalization and enhancing cooperation between China and African countries.To strengthen the FOCAC mechanism and better implement its follow-up actions, the Chinese side established its FOCAC Follow- Up Committee in December 2001, which is composed of senior officials from 21 ministries, state commissions and agencies.
