As an excessive heat warning hits Southern California, beachgoers are staying onshore, despite the high temperatures.“My wife was a little freaked out,” said local surfer Craig Neil. “She sent me a text and said she’s getting the kids out of the water.”Out of the water because of what’s lurking inside the section of the Pacific Ocean.“We had a confirmed shark sighting,” said another surfer.A 12-foot great white shark spotted just off the San Clemente Pier, something locals say is happening more often.“It seems fairly normal here,” Neil said. “There’s usually shark sightings every month or two at least.”Now a new study is showing the number of great white sharks is rising off the California coast.“The simple reason for that is we’ve done a better job of protecting them,” said Chris Lowe a professor of marine biology and the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. “We’ve done a better job managing our fisheries and believe it or not, the water has gotten cleaner over the last 40 years."Lowe and his team have spent the past several years tracking these aquatic predators, saying while they are seeing more sharks in the water, they’re not seeing more attacks.“So, that’s all good news but we just have to learn ways to be better guests in somebody else’s home,” he said.A home with a now expanding zip code with more great white sharks moving up the coast.“Now we’re starting to see them in places off Monterey, a place where we hadn’t seen them before and this is largely due to the oceans getting warmer,” Lowe said.Lowe says this change in temperature is being seen around the world, which is something he believes will cause more great white sharks to relocate to colder waters, which could disrupt the ocean’s food chain and also alter the ecosystem.“If they get moved to a location where there’s less food, they’re just not going to do very well,” he said. “In fact, their populations may start to go down or they start to feed on something they never fed on before.”Back on the beach, stranded surfers like Neil stare at closure signs waiting for lifeguards to reopen the water, saying the ocean is the shark’s turf and that we’re just guests swimming in it. 2216

And each year, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, an organization affiliated with state treasury departments, states return more than billion to their rightful owners.Just ask Maria Barlow, an attorney in Chicago. A few months ago, she was sitting at home when she decided to plug her name into the Illinois unclaimed property website. “I was surprised to see there was an entry,” she says. Fast forward a few weeks, and she had a check in hand for .80.If you are wondering if you have unclaimed property, here’s how to find out.Search online at state agenciesThe National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators’ website, Unclaimed.org, links to agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and other territories. With these sites, you can search unclaimed property databases for free. The organization also sponsors MissingMoney.com, which lets users search multiple states at once, though not every state participates.To pull up the property database, you will likely be asked to enter a last name. You could also enter a first name, city or ZIP code to help narrow the search. From there, you may find entries detailing the owner’s last known address, property amount and the company that initially held the funds. Depending on the database, the state may provide the exact amount of the property, or give a range, such as “under ” or “ or more.”Barlow says her entry was from an old internet provider. The company owed her a refund because she moved and switched off service before her billing period ended. But it didn’t have the correct forwarding address, so it sent the money to the state. Barlow says she filed a claim online, and it was processed within two weeks. “Even in the pandemic, it didn’t take long to receive it,” she says.Finding a small amount can still give you breathing room in your monthly budget or help pad your emergency fund. She says that since she alerted them to the cash, many were able to collect. “I may be nosy, but I found them money,” she says.Pro tip: Make the most of your moneyIf you do find and receive funds, you can make this “found” money work for you by putting it in an account with a high interest rate. These accounts may earn 10 times more than the national average, so you can take the unexpected funds and grow them even more.The smaller amounts may not make you rich, but they can still be worth searching for, Walker says. “At the end of the day, it is your money. As hundreds of homeless wait to return to the Alpha Project tent in downtown after it was flooded last week, San Diegans are stepping in to give them a little holiday cheer.ABC 10News reporter Natay Holmes was at SDCCU Stadium on Sunday morning where a local photographer, Abe Barron, and a group of kind-hearted volunteers, donated food and treats to those in need.Their mission is called "X-Mas on the Street." The group got together to make 800 tamales to hand out, along with some festive Christmas cookies. Barron and the volunteers will be at the stadium today until noon. Anyone else wishing to donate to the Alpha Project today can visit Gate C through today.The Alpha Project shelter expects to be at the stadium for another week. 748
