JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The GI Bill provides educational assistance to service members, veterans and their dependents.Rob Bannon of Jacksonville, Florida, is among the veterans who have used the government benefit to better their lives. Bannon runs a small business coaching and training golfers, both professionals and beginners. “I always had in my mind that I wanted to do something like this, but I wasn’t sure how it was going to work,” said Bannon. “That was the hard part.”Figuring that out became easier, in part, thanks to the GI Bill. Bannon spent 20 years in the army. He served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, then as a part of the joint chiefs of staff in the Pentagon during September 11. After he committed to going to the Middle East, doing two tours in Iraq, the Post 9/11 GI bill, paid his tuition and part of his housing at the College of Golf at Kaiser University. “The schooling helped me not only on the technical side on how to teach and the golf swing, but the business of golf was a heavy influence in there,” said Bannon. He put the money he saved on tuition into his business and built the facility for TPG Golf. Essentially, the GI Bill helped Bannon build a new future, post service. And over the past 75 years, since the first version of the GI Bill was passed, it’s helped more than 18 million veterans do the same. “The burden that we placed on them mentally, how much we stress them in combat, what we ask of them. I think what we do for them when they come home, is a small price the country pays,” said Bannon. Bannon says it takes a special individual to get up every morning, walk out the door and leave their family, not known what’s to come.“It is just incredibly important that we look after all of our military and try to give them the support they need,” said Bannon. Although well-earned, Bannon says he’s grateful to have gotten that support through the GI Bill. 1929

At the same time, Walmart raised the age for gun purchases from 18 to 21. Kroger followed suit, ending all sales of guns and ammunition in its 45 Fred Meyer stores in the Pacific Northwest last March, citing declining consumer demand for firearms. The grocer had earlier stopped selling guns to people under 21 and pulled sales of magazines featuring "assault rifles."Over the last month, Walmart in particular has faced pressure to stop selling guns after 22 people were shot and killed by a white supremacist inside a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas.In its statement, Kroger said it would be "respectfully asking" that customers no longer openly carry guns in its stores, except for authorized law enforcement officers. It is unclear whether or how the grocer plans to enforce this request.Walmart said it will take a "non confrontational" approach to enforcing the new policy by putting up signs announcing the request outside of stores.Ed Scruggs, president of gun safety advocacy group Texas Gun Sense, said a number of retailers in the state (where open carry is legal) request that customers not openly carry in their stores by posting large signs stating the policy in English and Spanish outside their stores. It’s been more than four months since Elana Mugdan used her smartphone. Mugdan was the winner of Vitamin Water’s contest that asked participants to go smartphone free for a year for 0,000. When she found out she was selected, Mugdan was thrilled, stating, “I would love to get rid of my phone for a year and reclaim my life.”While most of us wouldn’t ditch the smartphone for an entire year, Mugdan was up for the challenge. She wasn’t completely tech-free, though. Mugdan was allowed to use a computer and a 10-year-old flip phone in case of an emergency. She says the hardest part has been navigating her way around new areas. Mugdan is an author, and she’s currently on a book tour.Her solution? “I go on Google Maps [and] print out directions,” she says.Despite some frustration, going without a phone has given her clarity and she encourages others to cut back.Mugdan recommends first limiting your screen time. Don’t check it first thing in the morning, and do not look at right before you go to bed. Even if you cut back an hour a two a day, Mugdan says, you will see and feel a difference. 1112
