Parents are approaching back-to-school as best they can, whether their kids are learning at home or face-to-face in the classroom. Many are also relying on after-school programs to help keep their kids mentally and academically successful."The reality is that because most of our schools are virtual or hybrid, after school is all the time and so our programs have been on overdrive to try and meet the need of all of our working parents. And whether you’re working from home or you have to go into work, it’s really hard to do that when you have kids that are home," said Jodi Grant, the Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance.Grant says after-school programs during the pandemic are essential. The national organization works with 27,000 programs across the country that are not only providing meals to children, but also virtual classroom spaces and childcare for working parents."I think we need to stop and put the kids first. And there’s a lot of creative ways that our kids can be learning, and they don't need to be isolated. After-school programs have jumped to do that and jumped through hoops to do that," said Grant.YMCA of the USA has slowly been reopening some programs since the spring, including a number of day camps this summer. As the fall approached, organizers realized they needed to expand after-school programs."We saw the need in the community to pivot to an all-day childcare model, where the children can now come to the Y, they’ll be separated into different pods and staff as they go through their virtual learning programs via their schools," said Ryan O'Malley with YMCA of the USA.O'Malley says there are more than 370 YMCA locations providing full-day childcare and virtual learning classrooms in 45 states across the country. Boys and Girls Clubs of America has 4,700 locations in the U.S. and right now more than 83% of them are providing some level of service."I think it's critical for both the physical safety but also the emotional safety for those young people and being able to provide those services," said Misty Miller, Senior Vice President for Organizational Development, Field Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.Miller says a majority of their Boys and Girls Clubs have opened in some capacity."With many of our schools being virtual, we have about 1,300 sites that are opening for the full day to be these virtual learning hubs or safety zones, if you will, which is a different place for us. And it's a very expensive place for us. Clubs are increasing their operating costs," said Miller. Boys and Girls Clubs reports it’s spending at least three times as much as it normally does on after-school care to accommodate safety protocols for COVID-19. YMCA of the USA says they've lost more than billion in revenue since the spring and that after-school programs are suffering financially right now."Very much so. I think it's a combination of things. One is that the programs that are operating its much more expensive to do. In many cases they have to rent additional space, they have to hire more staff, it's longer hours. We are pushing very hard in the next COVID bill to get some federal resources into after-school [programs] so that we can do this one-time short-term influx of money," said O'Malley.Some after-school programs are even helping families cover the costs of childcare, since many parents are finding it hard economically right now to pay the fees."We are looking to the communities for that support but we’re also looking to the federal government for that support. Ys are facing financial hardship that only the federal government can provide, so we’re really asking Congress to give back and look for that relief for charities that are so important to keep non-profits open like the Y open," said O'Malley. 3810

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. -- The first time we met Terrance Lewis was a couple weeks after he had been released from prison.“My name is Terrance Lewis. I’ve been a home a year now after spending 21 years in prison for a murder I did not commit.”He had successfully proven his innocence. However, 21 years of life were spent behind bars.“I can’t believe that I’ve been home an actual year already," Lewis said. "Sometimes it seems like it’s only been three weeks. Being in captivity for so long for a crime you didn’t commit and then be able to be free is breathtaking to say the least.”His freedom gave him motivation to have a positive impact on this world.“There would be no good having bitterness or resentment and hanging on to anger and rage. So, I channeled those frustrations and those emotions and I used them as propane or premium gas to do what one would consider a righteous work.”In his process of reintegrating back into society, Lewis has been working to get bills passed in the state of Pennsylvania – that would expunge records and compensate those wrongfully convicted. He’s also working at a homeless shelter. His love for supporting others is very clear.Among all these accomplishments in only 365 days, perhaps his greatest achievement he says is the creation of a nonprofit.“I have successfully launched the Terrance Lewis Liberation Foundation," Lewis said. "The Liberation Foundation is dedicated to advocating for those who are wrongfully convicted and who do not have legal representation.”The Liberation Foundation is still in its early stages. But with the help from students at the University of Pennsylvania, they’ll soon be helping people who say they were wrongfully convicted, but who don’t have the resources to advocate on their own behalf.“It takes a village and this is me, I guess, creating and manufacturing that village with the Liberation Foundation.”The Liberation Foundation is another nonprofit to add to the list of groups seeking justice for innocent people.“My name is Abd’allah Lateef, I am the Pennsylvania Coordinator for the Incarcerated Children’s Advocacy Network which is a program for the National Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth headquartered in Washington D.C.”The National Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth’s primary goal is advocacy and legislative work to abolish life without possibility of parole sentencing for children across the nation. Terrance – who was 17 at the time of his arrest -- was originally sentenced to life in prison without parole.“He’s one of the more fortunate ones who has been able to prove actual innocence and be fully exonerated,” Lateef said.Lateef says that’s not the case for a majority of people in black communities.“Black folks are – black children in particular – are three times more likely to be sentenced to life without possibility of parole in the state of Pennsylvania. And actually, across the nation those numbers hold true as well,” Lateef said.Lateef says people of color are charged, incarcerated and sentenced at rates more extreme than their white counterparts. According to the NAACP, Black people are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of whites. He believes it has to do with the way people of color - especially young people - are viewed in the criminal justice system.“They characterize black youth as being super predators, as being immoral, as being monsters in some cases, and all of the descriptors that are used to dehumanize youth in a way that doesn’t apply to their white counterpart,” Lateef said.Terrance says what happened to George Floyd hit him on a very personal level.“It’s real. It’s really, really real. Because I’ve been there before having my life taken from me, and I just think, ‘wow, what would be the next traffic stop of pullover for myself? Would my fate be like the fate of George Floyd?” Lewis said.Lateef and Terrance both agree the criminal justice system has a lot of work that needs to be done to assure people of color are treated fairly, work that requires commitment from everyone."That shouldn’t be the onus of black and brown people, but that’s the onus of every American with a conscience who thinks of this country as being a great country, who thinks of this country being a land of opportunity," Lateef said.A land of opportunity that Terrance is now fully embracing to help other people who claim innocence.“The gray in my beard comes from having the tenacity not to quit even when you know you feel the pressure on your back and you just push forward. So that’s what I’ve been doing, and thus it’s showing on my face,” Lewis said. 4606

PHOENIX (AP) — A federal court in Maryland has ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program must be restored fully, meaning it must open up to new applicants for the first time in three years.The program helps immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to legally work and protects them from deportation. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump didn't properly end the program in 2017.Roughly 650,000 people are enrolled in DACA, but only those who were already in the program when it ended have been able to renew.The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said it is reviewing the ruling.The attorney general of California, Xavier Becerra, led the multistate coalition in the lawsuit that sought to restore DACA.After the court’s ruling, Becerra said, "From the Supreme Court down, the courts have made it clear: DACA stands, and now its doors are open to new Dreamers to apply.
