That black hole you've seen everywhere now has a name. It's been christened Powehi — a Hawaiian phrase referring to an "embellished dark source of unending creation."The groundbreaking, first-ever photograph of a black hole was published around the world when it was unveiled on Wednesday, captivating viewers and providing the only direct visual evidence that these regions of spacetime exist. The responsibility of finding it a name fell to Larry Kimura, a Hawaiian language professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, who was approached by astronomers involved with the project. Two of the eight telescopes used to capture the photograph are located in Hawaii.Powehi was chosen for its roots in the Kumulipo, an 18th-century Hawaiian chant that describes a creation story. It puts together two terms from the chant: Po, meaning profound dark source of unending creation, and wehi (or wehiwehi) which is one of the several ways that po is described in the chant."It is awesome that we, as Hawaiians today, are able to connect to an identity from long ago, as chanted in the 2,102 lines of the Kumulipo, and bring forward this precious inheritance for our lives today," Kimura said in a statement."To have the privilege of giving a Hawaiian name to the very first scientific confirmation of a black hole is very meaningful to me and my Hawaiian lineage that comes from po," he added. "I hope we are able to continue naming future black holes from Hawaii astronomy according to the Kumulipo."Powehi was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope, a project that connected eight telescopes around the world. The supermassive black hole and its shadow, at the center of a galaxy known as M87, were photographed back in April 2017, but the results were only revealed on Wednesday."We have seen what we thought was unseeable," said Sheperd Doeleman, director of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, unveiling the historic snap. "We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole."More than 200 researchers were involved in the project, and they had worked for more than a decade to capture the image. The project is named after the event horizon, the proposed boundary around a black hole that represents the point of no return where no light or radiation can escape. The telescope array collected 5,000 trillion bytes of data over two weeks, which was processed through supercomputers so that the scientists could retrieve the images."Powehi, as a name, is so perfect, because it provides real truths about the image of a black hole that we see," Jessica Dempsey of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, said in 2617

The International Air Transport Association says the virus outbreak that began in China could cost airlines as much as 3 billion in lost revenue due to the collapse of air travel. Representatives of the airline industry group said Thursday after a working meeting in Singapore that the industry urgently needs help from governments in waiving some requirements and fees to alleviate the burden on struggling carriers. An earlier estimate just two weeks ago put the potential cost of the downturn in travel at less than billion. The group’s estimate reflects a scenario involving a 19% loss in revenues with extensive spread of the virus in markets that now have 10 or more confirmed cases. That reflects countries accounting for 80% of airline revenues. The biggest losses would be in the Asia-Pacific region, including China, which has by far the most cases of the virus. “This is a very serious cash flow shock,” said Brian Pearce, the IATA’s chief economist. “We are seeing this serious decline in bookings and revenues outside the Asia-Pacific now that it (the virus) has spread more widely.”The IATA officials said the consensus of experts was that air travel remains relatively safe and that there are no known cases of passengers spreading the virus while on aircraft. 1294

The brutal heat wave that engulfed more than half of the country, left tens of thousands without power and resulted in two deaths is finally coming to an end.People in the Midwest and Northeast should wake up to cooler temperatures Monday morning, according to CNN Meteorologist Michael Guy.That's because a cold front from Canada has traveled south, bringing with it some rain and a lot of much needed relief for overheated cities, many of which were under excessive heat watches over the weekend.Guy said that those in Washington DC and Philadelphia could still see temperatures in the 90's, but things should cool down by midweek. Some states in the Midwest such as Iowa and Illinois have already seen this cold front and lower temperatures as a result of cooler, drier air that's come down from our neighbors to the north. But even with a cold front the thermometer won't drop that much. The front is only expected to bring temperatures down into the mid-80's in the Midwest and Northeast, which is a normal range for this time of year, Guy said.Oddly enough, there are other parts of the United States that haven't experienced the above average heat that has plagued most of the country but are, instead, reporting record lows."While the East Coast was baking, parts of Montana hit in the upper 30's," Guy said, noting that on Sunday morning parts of Montana registered a record low for the day, reaching only 38 degrees Fahrenheit.Excessive heat watchAbout 195.7 million people were under an excessive heat watch or warning or a heat advisory Friday, according to the National Weather Service with alerts stretching from New Mexico to Maine.Record-breaking highs were recorded in at least four cities, including El Paso, Texas, which topped out at a boiling 106 degrees Fahrenheit, and Atlantic City, which saw 100 degrees. In Washington DC the fire department received 33 heat-related calls over the weekend and transported 11 people to hospitals due to heat-related illnesses, DC Fire spokesman Douglas Buchanan said.Buchanan tells CNN his department responded to 64 heat-related calls since the heat wave began on Thursday.Boston, New York and Philadelphia were just a few of the other cities on the East Coast that were under excessive heat warnings as of Friday.New York Mayor Bill De Blasio even issued an emergency declaration because of the intense heat that threatened its nearly 20 million residents. That declaration ordered office buildings 100 feet or taller to raise office thermostats to 78 degrees to conserve energy and urged residents to conserve energy. The emergency declaration ended at 11:59pm EST Sunday. But rolling power outages in the boroughs left some in Brooklyn, the Bronx and parts of Queens without any refuge from the blistering heat Sunday night. At its peak ConEdison reported a total of 53,000 customers without power across New York City prompting New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to deploy hundreds of State Police, generators and light towers to assist. He encouraged New Yorkers to check on their elderly neighbors.Extreme heat also resulted in the cancellation of the New York City Triathalon on Sunday because the organization felt it was unsafe for athletes and spectators alike.High heat index in the MidwestSweltering temperatures led to several cities issuing heat advisories and opening up cooling centers to try to protect the most vulnerable communities.Officials in Detroit opened cooling centers and had members of the Police Department check on homeless people and offer them a ride to the centers. In other parts of the Midwest, several communities experienced soaring heat indexes. Madison, Wisconsin, for example, reached 93 degrees but had a heat index of 109 on Friday.Heat index or "apparent temperature" is a combination of air temperature and humidity which measures what the body actually feels when it's outside, according to CNN Meteorologist Haley Brink"We should pay attention because of the way we, as humans, cool down," she said. "We cool down by sweating, and that sweat evaporates off of our bodies, in turn decreasing our body temperature."When it is really humid outside, the rate of sweating decreases, so it actually feels warmer outside than it is," Brink said.Heat-related deathsThese record high temperatures are to blame for at least two deaths in recent days.Mitch Petrus, a former NFL lineman for the New York Giants, died from heatstroke at the age of 32 on Thursday. The former Super Bowl champion was working outside at his parents' shop in Lonoke County, Arkansas, where the temperature reached 92 degrees and a heat advisory was in effect, according to Pulaski County Coroner Gerone Hobbs.Petrus' mother told the coroner that her son had been drinking water while working outside but did not get enough electrolytes. Petrus did not appear to have any pre-existing conditions, Hobbs said.A woman hiking on a Maryland trail in the Washington DC suburbs died Saturday from what authorities believe was a heat-related emergency, Pete Piringer, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, told CNN.Earlier this week Maryland officials announced four heat-related deaths between the July 3 and 15 but these were unrelated to the current heat wave. Those deaths included people in Prince George's, Worcester, Baltimore City, and Anne Arundel counties Maryland health officials said. 5378

The 18-year-old who said that actor Kevin Spacey groped him at a Nantucket bar in 2016 took Snapchat video of the alleged assault, and investigators have that video, according to a criminal complaint filed in Nantucket District Court. The complaint from Massachusetts State Police details an incident between Spacey and a busboy at the Club Car, a restaurant and bar on Nantucket, late on July 7 into July 8.The busboy, who was 18 at the time, told Spacey he was 23 and studying business at Wake Forest University, according to the complaint. That night, Spacey bought him a number of alcoholic drinks, bragged to him about the size of his penis, and tried to get the busboy to go back to his house afterward, the accuser told police in the complaint.Later, as the two stood near the piano player in the bar, Spacey reached over and began to rub the busboy's thigh, the complaint states. Spacey then unzipped the accuser's pants and rubbed his penis, both in and out of his pants, for about three minutes, he told police. The busboy did not know what to do and did not want to get in trouble at work for drinking, particularly because he was under the legal drinking age, the complaint states. He said that he tried to shift away with his body and move Spacey's hands away with his hands, but Spacey kept reaching down his pants, the complaint states.During this time, he was texting with his girlfriend, who did not believe what he was telling her, the complaint states. So he sent her video on Snapchat of Spacey groping him, the complaint states. In his interview with police, investigators showed the busboy that video and confirmed his and Spacey's clothing that night. The allegations in the complaint match those of Heather Unruh, a former TV news anchor who said at a press conference last year that 1816

The captain of a cruise ship hit by the coronavirus told passengers it's headed to the port of Oakland, California. Grand Princess Capt. John Smith told passengers in an audio address Saturday night that the ship will dock in Oakland. The company that owns the ship says it is expected to arrive on Monday. Smith told passengers that people who require “acute medical treatment and hospitalization” will be taken to health care facilities in California. Other guests will be taken to federally operated isolation sites or transported out of California. The captain said he was not given any information about non-U.S. citizens. The ship is carrying more than 3,500 people from 54 countries. 703
