Hair stylist Joy Munlin has become a professional at straightening natural hair, because she says so many of her working clients request it. “Some of them have been called in the office by their superiors just to say it's too ethnic and it's distracting and can you do something about it,” Munlin says. Now, for the first time, new guidelines in New York City are aiming to protect New Yorkers from being harassed, threatened, punished, demoted or fired because of their natural hair. In a viral video, Antionette Jones Gaston shared how her job asked her to straighten her hair. “I felt so ugly that day over something as simple as my hair,” she says in the video. Gaston is no longer with the company, but she hopes the new rules will make people and organizations more aware.“Caucasians have their hair in different colors and different types of style, and they're just looked at as being different,” Gaston says. “But I’m looked at unpresentable, because of my race and the kinkiness of my hair.” TV journalist Brittany Noble Jones made headlines after being fired just a month after asking her boss if she could wear her natural hair on-air.“He was like, ‘Yeah, that's fine’ and then about a month later, he was like your natural hair is unprofessional,” Jones recalls. DENVER, Colo. – Amanda Dufresne Lee is a sexual assault survivor. “I was on my daily run training for my first half marathon when I was attacked, beaten and attacked by a stranger,” Dufresne Lee said. It happened in August of 2003. She was a college student in Waco, Texas. While she was running, something hit her head from behind and she fell to the ground. “Then I turned to put my hand up thinking someone would help me up,” said Dufresne Lee. “And instead he picked me up by my throat.” Nearly two decades later, her memory of the traumatic experience unfortunately hasn’t faded. “I narrowly escaped with my life by rolling myself over a small cliff and running half-clothed to safety,” Dufresne Lee said. “I like to say that was the easy part, and everything following that was an absolute nightmare.” Dufresne Lee had PTSD so severe she became an insomniac, and it took her years to feel safe again. “I struggled to go to parking lots, because I felt like strangers were going to attack me,” Dufresne Lee said. However, she says there is part of her story she looks back on in a positive way. “I had two incredible nurses who were empathetic and warm and kind and patient who were there for me in absence of family or friends,” she said. Following her assault, Dufresne Lee was treated by a specific type of forensic nurse, known as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – SANE for short. “A lot of people don’t know what they’re allowed to receive, what they can receive, what they can ask for. That’s the best part about being a SANE nurse is giving my patients that choice and that right back. And letting them know what is available to them,” UCHealth SANE nurse Tammy Scarlett said. Tammy Scarlett has been a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for nearly five years. She currently works at UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She says she treats both men and women of all ages, but a majority of her patients are adult women. The exam varies depending on each situation. First, they address any medical concerns, and then they go through a history of what happened. Following that, the lengthy and intimate exam starts. “That’s where we check out any genitalia making sure there’s no injury. We can collect evidence, and we can do photo documentation as well,” Scarlett said. Dufresne Lee says the exam took even longer for her because her body kept going into shock, and she’d start violently shaking all over. "It’s incredibly invasive. Many women – myself included – describe it as being re-traumatized because they are combing through everything looking for evidence,” Dufresne Lee said. However, that evidence is necessary to find the offender and get justice. SANE nurses are able to provide one-on-one care. BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — A man said he was almost lynched over the July 4 weekend at Lake Monroe in Bloomington. He said a group of people physically assaulted him and threatened him using racially-charged language.The mayor of Bloomington has condemned what he saw in a series of videos that has now gone viral, being shared thousands of times. The video shows several men holding a black man against a tree, with his arms behind his back, allegedly threatening to lynch him.'Let him go, dude, please let him go. Please let him go.'"To be pinned down at the tree and hear him yell at his friend, 'Get a noose,' not even a rope, to get a noose with so much intent and the connotation that that carries in our society, I knew my life was in danger," Vauhxx Booker said.In disbelief is how Booker said he felt when men were seen holding him against his will — shouting 'white power' and other racial slurs."There was a moment where a white woman that was standing by yelled out not to kill me and as I was underneath these men struggling to breathe. I realized that she was talking about me, not to kill me," Booker said.Booker said he and some friends went to watch the lunar eclipse on the 4th of July at Lake Monroe. A group of men informed them the route they were taking to get to the public access beach was on private property but then things got hostile, leaving Booker with a minor concussion, abrasions and patches of hair ripped out."What went through my mind was I could be the next person like that or I could be the next hashtag," Booker said.What saved his life, Booker said, was his friends along with bystanders that heard the commotion and demanded the attackers let him go, refusing to leave."They stayed. LINWOOD, Kan. – A former animal control officer is fighting with the City of Linwood, Kansas, for a family pet — a pet pot-bellied pig. His name is Dude and he's a 6-year-old Juliana pot-bellied pig. He's the newest member of Bailey Parker's menagerie at her home. He shares the yard with two ducks, four chickens, and occasionally the family's two dogs and cat. "I talk to them all like they're my children. Like, this is my family," Parker said. Dude even comes inside the house, too. Parker said he's more intelligent than her dogs, which the general public doesn't realize. Parker adopted him a few months ago from a goat farm, where he wasn't getting the specific care he needed. According to the City, Dude is livestock and not allowed inside city limits. "I would have never brought him in if I thought he was livestock or swine. A pot-bellied pig is not livestock," Parker said. She's asking the City to amend the ordinance or have the City issue her a special permit. The City refused a few months ago, but Parker and her attorneys returned to the city council meeting on Dec. 17. The City again denied the request and now Parker's attorneys, Tristen Woods and Lauren Kruskall, are taking the City to court in January. If they lose a bench trial, Woods said they will take it further to a jury trial in Leavenworth County. "At some point, we felt as a city we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you're going to start seeing people with horses and cows and sheep and everything else saying they're pets," said Brian Christenson, mayor of Linwood. Christenson said he's not against the pig, but laws are laws. The City recently amended the same animal control ordinance to allow pit bulls and chickens, of which Christenson said Parker has taken advantage. "The biggest problem we have, we don't have the resources, the animal control, all the things we would have to start adding these exotic animals," Christenson said. Not long after Parker adopted him, Dude got out of the yard and wandered to the park across the street because her kids accidentally left the fence open. Christenson said it took four people two hours to wrangle the pig, but Parker said it wasn't a big deal and she has since made provisions to prevent it from happening again. "We don't have animal control officers. We don't know what kind of medicines [pigs] have, what shots they're supposed to have," said Christenson. "It's just more work added that we'd have to do." Parker said Dude is well taken care of and isn't a nuisance. "If I have the means to give them something, I want to be able to help them and I don’t think I should be told what I can and can’t have in my backyard," said Parker. Parker has gathered around 50 signatures on a permit from people who support her request. Nearby DeSoto, Kansas, allows pot-bellied pigs as pets. Kansas City, Missouri, allows pot-bellied pigs, too. Bonner Springs doesn't have any language on the books about pot-bellied pigs, but the city council is taking up the topic at its next meeting on Jan. 13. Eudora and Olathe don't have language on pot-bellied pigs, either.
