BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign.At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23. The local government has asked kindergartens and schools across the province to step up health checks of children.Li urged the acceleration of research into vaccines and drugs for the disease and a focus on prevention and control work in rural areas for the most vulnerable groups.HFMD is a common illness mainly affecting children under the age of 10. It usually starts with a slight fever which is followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through contact with saliva or feces of the infected.Li stressed related departments across the country should step up work to prevent and control A/H1N1 influenza with emergency plans and ample storage of vaccines, drugs and equipment.Li added that major events, including the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be the key events for disease control and prevention.

ASTANA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Defense ministers of China and Kazakhstan agreed Friday to upgrade cooperation of the two militaries to a new level.At a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart, Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie recalled the smooth growth of the bilateral cooperative relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Kazakhstan, including frequent top-level exchanges, deepening of political trust, and expansion of cooperation in all aspects.He recalled frequent meetings between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The two leaders held in-depth discussions on how to further bilateral strategic partnership, thus continuously adding new momentum and providing guidance to the development of bilateral ties.Liang said military-to-military relationship is a key part of overall bilateral relations. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices will fall further with increasing supplies as temperatures continue to climb, the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planner, said Wednesday.Average retail prices for 15 kinds of vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants, dropped by 10.15 percent in May from April, the NDRC said.Prices for some vegetables fell drastically when the peak supply season came by the end of May, it said.NDRC monitoring showed prices of cucumbers on May 26 averaged 4.04 yuan (59 U.S. cents) per kg, 22 percent down from a month earlier while green rape dropped 20.1 percent in price month on month to 7.82 yuan per kg.In China, food prices account for a third of the weighting in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation.China's CPI picked up in April, rising 2.8 percent year on year because of lower comparison base last year and rising food prices because of adverse weather.The government set a target to keep the full-year growth in the CPI at about 3 percent this year.
