Shamika Burrage survived a near-fatal car accident two years ago, but not without losing something pretty important: her left ear.Now, thanks to a novel procedure performed at an Army medical center in Texas, Burrage is getting that ear back in a most unusual way.Plastic surgeons harvested cartilage from Burrage's ribs to create a new ear and then grew it under the skin of her forearm. Then the doctors at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso successfully transplanted the ear from her arm to her head.The technique -- a first time in the Army -- is called prelaminated forearm free flap, said Lt. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A small business landlord is giving his tenants some much-needed relief during the Coronavirus Pandemic. He's waived rent for April."Business is difficult in good times. It's especially difficult in bad times," says Daniel Powell, who is the landlord for 17 small businesses in the popular Arts District along South Cedros Avenue. "I think that what we can do together is more than we can do apart."Powell says he felt it was the "right" thing to do. His tenants say it's a reflection of the kind of person he is."His generosity and his action reminded me of what this is all about," says Carly Blalock, the owner of an interior design firm in Solana Beach. "It's about taking care of one another right now.""I have huge gratitude for him," says art dealer Lorna York. "I didn't know how I'd make it, and how I'd pay my rent. I have no income."Powell says he hasn't thought about May rent yet. He also added he didn't do this to pressure other landlords. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. According to American Cancer Society, one out of nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Ted was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 71.“The percentage of men my age that do come down with it is quite high, so I was startled – obviously nobody wants to find out they have cancer – but I wasn’t shocked,” prostate cancer patient Ted said.However, Ted found out he was a prime candidate for a type of treatment called HIFU, which stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The procedure has been around for quite a while, but it wasn’t approved for use on prostate cancer in the U.S. until 2015.“The HIFU procedure is basically a high-intensity focused ultrasound beam that oblates the cancer cells – basically blasts the cells away,” Ted said.Urologic surgeon Dr. Andre Abreu with Keck Medicine of USC says there’s a spectrum of patients who develop prostate cancer. Some are very low-risk, meaning they have very little cancer. They’re chosen for active surveillance where they are closely watched to make sure they don’t develop more cancer. Others have very advanced forms of cancer and need radical treatment like radiation or removal of the prostate. Then there are patients in the middle who largely benefit from HIFU.“In between, there are some patients with intermediate risk disease that are not the best candidate for us to watch them for active surveillance, however, the radical treatment would probably be associated with side effects,” Dr. Abreu said.Side effects like leaking urine, or issues with erectile dysfunction.“Some of these patients, they would be even willing to trade off some years of life, but having more quality of life,” Dr. Abreu said.A study at Keck Medicine of USC shows focal HIFU ablation carries a low risk of complication and can help preserve quality of life. That was certainly the case for Ted.“I experienced very little pain with the procedure," Ted said. "I took ibuprofen which is an over-the-counter pain reliever. And the only negative thing I did experience was wearing a catheter for a week.”“HIFU is repeatable, HIFU is non-invasive, HIFU is an out-patient procedure,” Dr. Abreu said.An out-patient procedure means the patient can be in and out of the hospital in one day without staying overnight. For Ted, it only took three hours. He says he would recommend the procedure to other men in a similar situation.“As I understand it, it’s been used in Europe for 15 years already with no problems. So, I think to take advantage of the technology that’s there is something the doctors should rely on,” Ted said. 2645

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - An injured sea lion spotted on a North San Diego County beach prompted lifeguards to place shark warning signs along a stretch of coastline Thursday. The incident was reported about 9:30 a.m. at 2525 South Coast Highway near Tower 11 at Cardiff State Beach, according to California State Parks officials. A jogger reported the sea lion with a missing tail and gash on its back, washed up on the beach.SeaWorld San Diego experts responded to the area but told 10News the sea lion later died due to the severity of its injuries. They confirmed the female sea lion was bitten by a shark.Lifeguards posted aggressive shark advisories for beachgoers from Cardiff Reef in the north to Seaside State Beach in the south, officials said. There was no immediate word on the type of shark involved. The incident Thursday marks the sixth shark sighting over the last several weeks in the waters off San Diego. Shark sightings several days in a row prompted shark advisories in Del Mar in July. A shark sighting in Coronado also forced lifeguards to post signs warning beachgoers about the presence of sharks.
