(KGTV) -- Mexican authorities are investigating the discovery of a tunnel near the Otay Mesa border in San Diego, U.S. officials said.Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the discovery Thursday morning but did not provide any further details.“At this time, U.S. authorities are aware of a tunnel discovered by Mexican law enforcement officials near the Otay Mesa border. However, we have not yet determined whether the tunnel entered into the U.S.," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman with the DHS.All that is known at this time is that the tunnel is in Mexican territory, south of Otay Mesa which stretches east of 805 and south of the 905 freeways.10News station partner Televisa reports that the tunnel does cross the border. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000

San Diego County handles approximately 9,000 cases of elder and dependent adult abuse every year. Elder abuse is defined by the Centers for Disease Control as "an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult." Types of elder abuse include: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, neglect, or financial abuse. The county sees about 450 cases a year of criminal elder abuse cases, according to Paul Greenwood with the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit of the District Attorney’s Office.  The District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit prosecutes crimes against seniors, as well as addresses the special needs of elderly victims. They meet with seniors to teach them how to protect themselves, train bank and credit union employees on protecting financial assets of elderly customers, and train first responders to be aware of issues involving elders.  The National Council on Aging? said approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some type of elder abuse. However, knowledge about elder abuse lags behind the fields of child abuse and domestic violence. (KGTV): City leaders in San Diego want to bring another major military attraction to America's Finest City.On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on a resolution showing their support for bringing the National Medal of Honor Museum to town.The resolution touts the city's strong military ties and thriving tourism industry as reasons for why the Museum should pick San Diego.Right now, the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation is still in the fundraising and planning phase. According to their website, the museum would tell the stories of each of the 3,500+ Medal of Honor recipients. It would also have an education center.There's no word from the museum on when they plan to pick a location.San Diego already has the USS Midway Museum, which brings in over one million visitors each year. The resolution also lists the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, The Veterans’ Museum and Memorial Center, Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, Cabrillo National Monument and the San Diego History Center as other major military monuments in town.The city is also home to the largest concentration of US Military members in the world. Approximately 143,000 active duty military and 241,000 veterans live in San Diego."It's a perfect fit," says Mark Balmert, the Executive Director of the San Diego Military Advisory Council. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Chesa Boudin, the son of anti-war radicals sent to prison for murder when he was a baby, has won San Francisco's tightly contested race for district attorney after campaigning to reform the criminal justice system.The former deputy public defender declared victory Saturday night after four days of ballot counting determined he was ahead of interim District Attorney Suzy Loftus. The latest results from the San Francisco Department of Elections gave Boudin a lead of 8,465 votes.Loftus conceded and said she will work to ensure a smooth and immediate transition.Boudin, 39, became the latest candidate across the nation to win district attorney elections by pushing for sweeping reform over incarceration.
