MOHE, Heilongjiang, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Some 42,000 tonnes of crude oil had as of 5:48 a.m. Sunday flowed through an oil pipeline linking Russia's far east and northeast China, 24 hours after the pipeline began operating, a spokesman for the Chinese operator of the pipeline said.The pipeline, which originates in the Russian town of Skovorodino in the far-eastern Amur region, enters China at Mohe and terminates at northeast China's Daqing City.A total of 1.32 million tonnes of oil is scheduled to be transported to China through the pipeline in January, said a spokesman for Pipeline Branch of Petro China Co., Ltd. (PBPC), the operator of the Chinese section of the pipeline.The 1,000-km-long pipeline will transport 15 million tonnes of crude oil from Russia to China per year from 2011 until 2030, according to an agreement signed between the two countries. Some 72 kilometers of the pipeline is in Russia while 927 km of it is in China.

Having made the historic leap from mere subsistence to overall moderate prosperity, the Chinese people are enjoying much higher living standards. Per capita income has risen eight times and more than 200 million people have been lifted out of poverty. A minimum living allowance system covering both urban and rural areas is by and large in place. And the Chinese people are leading an increasingly fulfilling cultural life.Proud as we are of these accomplishments, the Chinese people are keenly aware of the problems we face in development. China has to deal with the most complex national conditions in the world. Any big achievement in development, when divided among the 1.3 billion people, will become small. Today, 700 million Chinese are still living in the countryside, and China ranks somewhere around 100th in the world in terms of per capita GDP. Cities along China's coast have boomed. But in central and western China, some people still have no access to safe drinking water and some still live under thatched roofs. Infrastructure, medical services, cultural programs and education there remain underdeveloped. 150 million Chinese people are still living on less than one dollar a day. In China one can find both the advanced and the backward, both new problems and old ones. China still has to confront many challenges and risks on the way ahead.We have learnt one thing important as we look back at the past 30 years of development. We must keep to the path of development that fits China's reality, and we must at the same time be open and inclusive. We need to engage in exchanges and cooperation with other countries and draw on the fine achievements of human civilizations. Our world is one where no country can develop with its door closed. China cannot achieve development in isolation from the world and the world needs China for its development.Recently, China has formulated the blueprint for its economic and social development for the coming five years. The blueprint set out a clear vision to quicken the shift of economic development pattern. It spelt out China's desire to work with the international community to meet challenges and share opportunities. China's development will be even more closely linked with the world. First, China will keep to the policy of boosting domestic demand as a long-term strategy. China is at a stage of accelerated industrialization and urbanization. Second, China is speeding up adjustment of its industrial structure. It is vigorously upgrading the manufacturing sector, raising emerging industries of strategic importance and accelerating the development of the service sector. China will stay open to the outside world. It is committed to protecting intellectual property rights. It will continue to bring in advanced technologies and managerial expertise, and will encourage human capital to play a bigger role in economic growth. These measures are important in promoting development. Third, China is a solid champion of green economy. Many of the concepts and technologies that originated in developed countries, like circular economy, clean energy, low-carbon technology and sustainable development, have been more and more accepted by the Chinese business community and the general public, and have been applied in many aspects of their work and life. To turn the blueprint into reality, China will continue to deepen reform, stick to the market direction of reforms, and establish institutional arrangements that will facilitate economic transition. China's door is open to the world. China's development will bring enormous opportunities of cooperation to Spain and other countries in Europe and beyond.Situated on opposite ends of the Eurasian continent, China and Spain are geographically apart. But our peoples are close and our economies have much to offer one another. The fine tradition of friendship and exchanges between our two countries dates back a long time ago. China supports Spain in the series of economic and financial adjustment measures Spain has adopted, and is convinced of the certainty of full recovery of the Spanish economy. China is a responsible long-term investor, both in the European financial market and in the Spanish financial market. China has confidence in Spain's financial market. It has purchased Spanish Treasury bonds and will buy still more.China and Spain have all along been good friends and good partners. BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed the hope that the pricing difference on natural gas imported from Russia would be narrowed through joint efforts from both sides.Gu Jun, deputy director-general of the National Energy Administration's international department, made the remarks at a news briefing on Premier Wen Jiabao's upcoming visit to Russia and Tajikistan.Though companies from both sides had made many efforts in this regard, a certain difference still existed in the pricing of natural gas imported from Russia, Gu said, calling for additional sincerity to be demonstrated on the pricing talks by the two sides.Talks on this issue will be also a part of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan's upcoming visit to Russia, she said.In 2009, Russia inked a framework agreement with China on annually supplying at most 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China, but they still did not reach an agreement on the supplying price.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will pay official visits to Russia and Tajikistan from Nov. 22 to 25 at the invitation of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Tajikistan Prime Minister Akil Akilov.During the visits, Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the 15th Chinese-Russian prime ministers meeting and the ninth prime ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A survey conducted by an information center affiliated to Beijing's commerce bureau revealed that retail sales jumped at more than 3,500 stores in the Chinese capital during the 3-day New Year holiday ending Monday, nearly reaching 2.5 billion yuan (about 378 million U.S. dollars), up 17.1 percent from the same period last year.The Beijing Commercial Information Consultation Center surveyed 3,568 stores in Beijing regarding their sales volumes during the past three days, finding that various holiday promotions had brought notable results, pushing up sales to over 2.49 billion yuan.The survey results also showed that consumers in Beijing were passionate about buying gold, since gold prices have kept rising during the past year. XIANGTAN, Hunan, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Experts and rescuers said Wednesday there was little hope of finding seven miners trapped underground alive after a coal mine was flooded nearly one day earlier in Hunan Province.The flood happened at 11:38 p.m. Tuesday in a pit at the Yide Coal Mine in Xiangtan County, trapping seven miners at a depth of 89 meters, said Zhao Jun, one of the experts involved in the rescue operation.The miners were believed to be stranded in a tiny area and it is possible they have drowned, said Zhao, who is also the chief engineer of Hunan's Coal Industry Bureau.In addition, the oxygen density was tested to be 8 percent at a depth of 83 meters in the flooded pit, indicating less oxygen at the level where the miners were trapped, which increases the possibility of suffocation, rescuers said.However, rescuers are still trying to install more pumps to drain the water.A spokesman with the emergency rescue headquarters said Yide, a small mine that had doubled its annual output to 60,000 tonnes after recently merging with a neighboring mine, had been warned due to safety concerns, both orally and in writing, over the past four weeks.Senior executives and major shareholders of the mine are now in police custody.
