SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local woman says a water meter device in the Midway District has been leaking gallons of water for at least two years, but no one will fix it. She emailed Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner after contacting multiple government agencies to report the wasted water. The backflow device sits just off of Sports Arena Boulevard. When 10News visited it last week, it was dripping steady streams of water.“It’s a problem,” says Diane Ang, who works nearby. She says there's so much leaking water, that the surrounding transient population uses the water to fills up their bottles. Containers of shampoo and soap wrappers are scattered around. Ang tells 10News that people bathe in the water. At one point, she says, people grew a garden next to the device because the ground was so saturated with water. “[They had] tomatoes and some other vegetables,” she adds. There's no property tag on the device, so Ang called the City of San Diego at least three times but couldn’t get any help. She filled out multiple requests for assistance on the City’s "Get it Done” website, but there was no resolution. She was told the backflow device might belong to the Navy. She tells us that she made several attempts to get in touch with someone at the Navy. She says she spent at least two or three years trying to get the issue fixed. “No one cares. No one cares,” she adds.10News wanted to know how much water was leaking, so we timed one of the flowing streams using a measuring bucket. What we discovered was that thousands of gallons of water may have been wasted in the last few years. We took our information to Mathnasium of Point Loma. The math tutoring company found that 21,000 gallons would have be lost in one year alone, assuming the water had been leaking at the same rate, continuously. “It’s such a huge waste,” says Ang. 10News contacted the City of San Diego. A spokesperson directed us to the Navy. A weeks ago, we reached out Naval Base Point Loma. This Tuesday, a media spokesperson for Naval Base Point Loma sent us an email which reads, “We appreciate everyone who took the time to bring this leak to our attention. Our Naval Base Point Loma Public Works team is taking action to fix the leak today. Conserving our natural resources is a high priority and is very important to all of us at Naval Base Point Loma. We encourage active participation by contacting us directly at nbpl_pao@navy.mil or use the “Get-It-Done San Diego” app for the City of San Diego. [It] is a quick way for anyone in the community to report service issues (street lights, traffic signals, trash recycling, sidewalks, street flooding, etc.)” 10News verified that the leak has been addressed. Ang says that she’s pleased, but doesn’t think it should have taken this long. 2793

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A newly-released poll shows key San Diego County races are undecided ahead of the June 5 primary election. Many of the 1,100 voters questioned in the scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll showed no clear preference for non-partisan positions including District Attorney, Sheriff, and County Assessor.DISTRICT ATTORNEYSummer Stephan, the interim San Diego County District Attorney, held 35 percent of the vote to Genevieve Jones-Wright’s 22 percent. Stephan led among Republicans, white voters, and those over 35 years old. Jones-Wright led among Democrats, and Latino and younger voters. 43 percent of voters were undecided in the race.Stephan was appointed by the Board of Supervisors last year to fill the remainder for Bonnie Dumanis’ term. Jones-Wright is a Deputy Public Defender. The two have met in several public forums.  SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFFIncumbent Sheriff Bill Gore led Sheriff’s Department commander Dave Meyers by 10 percent in the poll. However, 33 percent of voters were undecided.Gore had stronger support from senior citizens, white voters and conservatives.  COUNTY ASSESSOR/RECORDER/COUNTY CLERKThe countywide election pitting incumbent Ernest Dronenburg Jr. against ethics attorney Matt Strabone shows voters were essentially tied, with a 6.3 percent margin of error. Dronenburg held 20 percent of the vote to Strabone’s 17 percent. An overwhelming 63 percent of voters were undecided.  VOTER BREAKDOWN84 percent of those surveyed said they were registered to vote in California. 14 percent were not, and 2 percent were not sure.About half of San Diegans said they would definitely vote in the June 5 election. About a fourth said they would likely vote. A combined 11 percent said they were unlikely or certain not to vote.According to the Registrar of Voters, 75 percent of those eligible to vote in the county are registered. Of those registered, 37 percent are registered Democrats, 29 percent are registered Republicans and another 29 percent are Independent. As far as voter turnout for the June Primary, over the last 30 years, the highest number of voters to turn out was 40 percent in 1990.  DO POLITICAL PARTIES MAKE A DIFFERENCE?The Survey USA pollsters asked San Diegans if political parties impacted how they planned to vote in the elections. About a third said party affiliation had a lot to do with their decision.   BIG ISSUESAs San Diegans head to the polls, they’ll be weighing different issues. The cost of living and housing affordability topped the list of concerns facing most voters. Crime and homelessness were also in the top five. 2680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego brewery is helping locals who find themselves in the kitchen more during California's stay at home order try their hands at bread making.Mission Brewery is offering small bags of dried yeast for free to community members in need."As a bread baker myself, I realized that yeast has become almost impossible to find on grocery shelves because of the COVID-19 crisis," says Mission Brewery owner Dan Selis. "I also realized that, as a brewery, we have excess yeast in supply and we can make some of that available to folks who want to bake their own bread at home."RELATED:San Diego distilleries making hand sanitizer amid coronavirus pandemicWho is open for business in San Diego during stay-at-home orderBags contain four tablespoons of yeast, which is enough for four, one-and-a-half-pound loaves of bread. The bags will be distributed one per person on a first-come, first-serve basis."We hope that providing yeast to San Diegans, enabling them to bake at home, will help folks all over the county to better weather this difficult time," Selis added. "No matter how you’re feeling, pulling a hot loaf of freshly baked bread out of your oven is sure to lift your spirits."Mission Brewery is located at 1441 L Street in downtown San Diego and opened Wednesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.The brewery's offer is the latest way local businesses are helping the community during the coronavirus pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach woman is appealing for tips after a hit-and-run driver struck the motor scooter she was riding, leaving her with serious injuries. On Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m., yoga teacher Fallon Lev was headed to a yoga studio, riding her motor scooter on Ingraham Street, when she exited onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard."Just gotten onto the ramp, going a reasonable speed," said Lev.In a one-lane section, she looked to her left and felt a car right next to her."It bumped me, causing the scooter wiggle back and forth. Instantly, I'm like on the floor, and my whole body is tumbleweeding on the cement. I must have gone five or six times," said Lev.She says the driver kept going. Later, at the hospital came the diagnosis and surgery."I broke my pelvis in two different areas and have these two bars sticking out of my hipbone and a bar straight across," said Lev.She also suffered a painful road rash and a broken tooth. Her road to recovery will be a long one. Lev, a yoga teacher whose income was greatly impacted by the pandemic, is trying to stay positive. The actions of the driver make her angry."I'm trying not to affect it my healing. Of course, it's extremely disturbing and disappointing ... There is no way the driver didn’t see me go down. They actively chose to leave me," said Lev.In fact, Lev remembers feeling like this was no accident. She was leaving traffic on a one-lane section of the roadway."I felt like it was on purpose. I wasn’t going fast enough, and that was my payback," said Lev.Lev is now hoping for tips to track down a hit-and-run driver."The driver deserves to know that’s not the way you treat a human being," said Lev.Lev recalls an older model, maroon sedan, which may have been the car right behind the car that hit her. If you have any information on the case, call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help Lev with expenses. 1937

But they said it was denied.Tinoco can still apply by mail but he predicts it could be months before he gets a response.“There’s a high chance it might get accepted, but meanwhile, I don’t know what’s going to happen to my grandpa,” he said.Tinoco says he hasn’t seen his grandpa since he was five. All his other grandparents have passed away. 968
