BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China's government is set to order some central state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to quit real estate business as their land acquisitions are blamed for fuelling rise of urban housing prices, spokesman of the state assets watchdog Du Yuanquan said Thursday.The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) would require 78 centrally-administered SOEs, whose major business was not property development, to withdraw from the business, Du said in a SASAC press conference Thursday in Beijing.The SASAC gave no specific timetable for the withdrawal, but Du said it would require the 78 enterprises to step up business restructuring and gradually pull out of property development after all current real estate projects were finished.Housing prices in China's 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 10.7 percent in February from a year earlier, and were up 0.9 percent compared to the previous month, according to official figures.However, a total of 16 central SOEs, who have property development as major business, such as the China National Real Estate Development Group Corp. and the China Poly Group Corp., would continue in real estate, said Du.

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's per capita gross domestic product exceeded 10,000 U.S. dollars for the first time last year after a strong economic recovery, a local statistics official said Thursday.The GDP in the Chinese capital grew 10.1 percent to 1.187 trillion yuan (137.8 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, according to the Beijing Bureau of Statistics.The per capita GDP was 68,788 yuan (10,070 U.S. dollars) as the city had 17.55 million permanent residents at the end of 2009."The breakthrough is a milestone for Beijing," said Yu Xiuqin, the bureau's deputy director. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Most of the melamine-tainted milk products recently resurfacing in China have been recalled and destroyed, and none has been put into market or exported, the nation's food safety office said Friday."Due to early discovery and timely check, as of now, most of the tainted milk products have been recalled and destroyed, and none has entered the market or been exported," said the National Food Safety Rectification Office in a statement.Media reports said melamine-tainted dairy products have resurfaced in several Chinese provinces. Explaining why such cases could happen, the office said some producing and processing companies didn't fulfil the responsibilities for food safety and some violators hid tainted milk products or fabricated test reports to dodge inspections.The office urged related departments at all levels to thoroughly investigate the new cases and severely punish violators.In 2008, milk laced with melamine led to the deaths of six babies and sickened 300,000 others who had been fed with baby formula made from tainted milk.
