Lorenzo Liberti is a teenage flag maker."The day that I stop working is a day that a hero could be forgotten," says the 15-year-old from Lakewood Ranch.Using pinewood and prodigious talent, Lorenzo works day and night in his garage hand-carving Heroic Flags, gorgeous, time-consuming tributes to American heroes he sells and donates to help people in need."As long as you're living, you're here for a purpose," he says.Lorenzo has only been creating the flags for the past eight months or so. He's made about 50 so far and raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs, homeless veterans, and Bradenton's Turning Points nonprofit."This is bigger than me," he says.The pandemic has inspired Lorenzo's newest mission: honoring medical workers across the country.He's raising money to try and get one of his flags in a hospital in every state: 50 flags, all across America. LONG BEACH (CNS) - For thousands of years, millions of tiny white abalone snails lived along the California coast.Now facing extinction, the white abalone will be getting a major boost toward survival this month, thanks to a breeding program spearheaded by marine organizations across the state, including the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.In mid-November, researchers from the aquarium, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, the Bay Foundation, Paua Marine Research Group and state Department of Fish and Wildlife will be releasing white abalone into the wild at a series of undisclosed locations across Southern California.RELATED: Dog swept out to sea rescued, owner asks for more signage"This is a historic moment, as a species once on the brink of extinction may finally have a chance to rebound," said Sandy Trautwein, vice president of animal husbandry at Aquarium of the Pacific. "This is important not just for white abalone, but for the entire marine ecosystem off Southern California."Researchers are withholding the locations of the planned releases, hoping to give the white abalone the best chance at successfully settling into their new homes. The white abalone were actually placed underwater at their release locations last month, but they remain inside holding boxes."Natural recovery is not occurring fast enough or at all for this species to rebound on its own," said Melissa Neuman of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services' Abalone Recovery Program. Aquarium of the Pacific officials noted that when they joined the program in 2008, only 75 white abalones existed in managed care.The once-teeming population of white abalone was decimated over the decades by overfishing and low reproduction rate, according to the NOAA. Recent surveys indicated that the population dropped by about 99% in Southern California since 1970s.The white abalone was officially listed as a federally endangered species in 2001 -- the first marine invertebrate ever to make the list.NOAA officials said that without intervention, the remaining population would likely continue to decrease by 10% a year. 2493

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new rule approved by the California Horse Racing Board means jockeys competing in the state won’t be allowed to strike a horse more than six times during a race and then only in an underhanded position. The rule would allow no more than two strikes in succession using whips that must meet new board standards to soften the blows. The board voted 4-2 to approve the rule. LITTLETON, Colo. — A local woman says she entered the My Oreo Creation contest, her idea was picked as a finalist, yet she's never been acknowledged by Oreo as a winner.Taylor Young, of Lone Tree, submitted her idea for a cherry cola flavored Oreo last May. Shortly after submitting her idea, she received a note from Oreo and its parent company, Mondelez International, Inc., that read, "Dear Taylor Young, Thanks for sending us your idea. We thought it was so delicious, we turned it into this one-of-a-kind creation just for you. Straight from the wonder vault. Enjoy!"They also sent her a small packet with two cherry cola flavored Oreo cookies inside."It is pretty good,” Young said. “I tried it.”Young was on cloud nine.The contest states all finalists are awarded ,000. And it states the person who submits the winning flavor will win 0,000.“I, from what I can tell, was the first person to tweet that idea," Young said.But then, for Young, the contest turned sour. Oreo stopped communicating with her. Months went by and in December, she saw her cookie on store shelves.“I reached out to them and I said, 'I'm seeing that my cookie won," Young said.Oreo finally responded saying in part, cherry cola was already in development — so it wasn't her idea, it was theirs."That's not cool," Young said. "If they claim that they already had it in their back pocket, then they don't need to provide prizes to anyone."Oreo and its parent company did not respond to a request for comment. Young finds the whole thing to be disingenuous.“I'm old enough to realize that life isn't always fair,” Young said. “But, if there was a kid who came up with this - and their mom and dad submitted it and they saw it on the shelves, that's really sad.
