LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who said he was shot in a station parking lot was lying.Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said at a news conference late Saturday that Wednesday's "reported sniper assault was fabricated" by Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old deputy.A department statement on Thursday had said a round hit the top of Reinosa's shoulder, damaging his uniform shirt but failing to penetrate his flesh.But Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener says no bullets were recovered from the scene and detectives saw "no visible injuries." LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California residents faced with the loss of lives and homes in a huge wildfire also are grappling with the destruction of a vast swath of public lands that are popular destinations for hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers.The Woolsey Fire has charred more than 83 percent of National Park Service land within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, where officials announced Wednesday that all trails were closed."We understand that folks are curious about how their favorite park spots fared. Firefighters have made steady progress this week, getting it more than halfway contained, but warned many hotspots remain.A massive burn scar encompasses more than 30 square miles (80 square kilometers) within the recreation area that stretches from beaches to inland mountains straddling Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It's the largest urban national park in the nation, with more than 30 million visitors every year.Cyril Jay-Rayon, 52, watched the news with despair as flames engulfed what he called his "main playground" — a rugged area where he rode his mountain bike a few times a week. It includes the famous Backbone Trail, a 65-mile (104-kilometer) route that offers challenging terrain for bikers and hikers who are rewarded with soaring views of the Pacific Ocean."It's just devastating. Those trails are my sanity. It's where I ground myself," he said. "I love the city, but I also love how easy it is to get out into the wild."People share their recreation areas with wildlife, including 13 mountain lions tracked by biologists via GPS collars. Park officials said two of the big cats were unaccounted for. Four monitored bobcats also were believed to have survived, but their habitats were burned, the park service said.While the damage was still being assessed, officials confirmed that Paramount Ranch's "Western Town," a landmark film location dating to 1927 that included a jail, hotel and saloon, burned to the ground. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some U.S.-based users of WeChat are suing President Donald Trump in a bid to block an executive order that they say would effectively prohibit U.S. access to the popular Chinese messaging app. The complaint was filed Friday in San Francisco and asks a federal court judge to stop Trump’s order from being enforced. It claims a ban would violate U.S. users’ constitutional rights. Trump has ordered sweeping but vague bans on transactions with the Chinese owners of WeChat and the TikTok app. He says they threaten U.S. national security. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The western Joshua tree needs protection under the California Endangered Species Act because of threats from climate change and habitat destruction, the Center for Biological Diversity said in a petition Tuesday to the state's Fish and Game Commission.The petition comes amid rising concern about the future of the crazy-limbed trees with spikey leaves that have come to symbolize the Mojave Desert and draw throngs to Joshua Tree National Park."The state has to step up for these trees," center conservation director Brendan Cummings said in a statement.The petition asks that western Joshua trees be given "threatened" status under the act.The request states that the trees meet the definition of a plant that "is likely to become an endangered species in the foreseeable future in the absence of the special protection and management efforts."Researchers have found that Joshua trees are dying off due to hotter and drier conditions, and fewer young trees are surviving, according to the center, a nonprofit conservation organization based in Tucson, Arizona.The trees are migrating to higher elevations where there are cooler and more moist conditions, but they face destruction by fire due to invasive, non-native grasses in those locations.Joshua trees also face challenges due to urban sprawl in the desert as well degradation of habitat for energy projects, powerlines, pipelines and off-road-vehicle use.The western Joshua tree's habitat includes Joshua Tree National Park and stretches to the west along the north slopes of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountain ranges into the Antelope Valley, northward along the eastern flank of the southern Sierra Nevada and eastward toward the edge of Death Valley National Park and into Nevada.The eastern Joshua tree — a distinctly different plant — lives in the Mojave National Preserve and eastward into Nevada, Arizona and Utah.The Center for Biological Diversity said that under the California Endangered Species Act, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife has three months to make a recommendation to the Fish and Game Commission, which would then vote on the petition next year. 2171
