SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials announced Tuesday that students at three high schools in San Diego County have tested positive for mumps and may have exposed others to the contagious virus in the last two weeks. One person at each of the campuses -- High Tech High School International, La Jolla High School and San Pasqual High School -- tested positive for the virus, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, which did not specify whether the patients were students or staffers.Students and faculty at the three schools are being advised to be aware of possible mumps symptoms, which can include a fever, headache, earache and salivary gland inflammation. The exposures happened during normal school hours on Oct. 21-22 at High Tech High; Oct. 21-23, 25 and 28 at La Jolla High; and at San Pasqual High on Oct. 17-18 and 21-24.Symptoms can show between 12 and 25 days after exposure, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency."We are working closely with school officials to inform the school communities about the symptoms of mumps and vaccine recommendations," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Because there is no prevention after exposure for mumps, people should be watching for symptoms and make sure they have all the recommended doses of measles, mumps and rubella immunizations."County health officials have received reports of 47 mumps cases this year, the most in 25 years. Mumps cases statewide, nationwide and in Baja California are also outpacing the number of reported cases at this time last year. The viral disease is passed through coughing, sneezing or close contact. Severe complications are often rare but can include meningitis, permanent hearing loss, a decrease in fertility and fetal loss for pregnant women in their first trimester. Most mumps patients recover without incident.Health officials encouraged all residents to receive the measles-mumps- rubella vaccine to protect against developing the illnesses. The vaccine is recommended in two doses at 12 to 15 months old and at 4 to 6 years old. Residents can contact the county's immunization program at 866-358-2966 or at sdiz.org for more information on the vaccine. 2236

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Attempted murder, kidnapping, child abuse, child abduction, criminal threats and burglary charges have been filed against a man accused of intentionally driving a pickup truck off Sunset Cliffs and into the ocean with his twin toddler daughters inside, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced Friday.Robert Brians is being held without bail on suspicion of driving into the water last Saturday morning with his 2-year-old daughters inside the truck. The girls were hospitalized in stable condition, according to a GoFundMe page created to raise money for their medical bills.Brians, 47, is slated to be arraigned Monday afternoon via video conference at the San Diego Central Courthouse on the 13-count complaint.RELATED: Police: Man drives off Sunset Cliffs with twin daughters in truckAbout 4:30 a.m. last Saturday, the toddlers' mother called 911 to report that Brians had taken their children without permission and allegedly contacted her via "numerous calls and texts ... clearly stating she may not see (them) again," according to the GoFundMe.com page created Sunday. He allegedly threatened to drive the vehicle off the Coronado Bay Bridge, but was later spotted by officers on Hill Street near Cornish Drive and sped off, careening over the side of a cliff and landing upside down in the water, according to police.RELATED: Fundraiser to help toddlers involved in Sunset Cliffs crashMoments later, a canine officer also responding to the emergency, 22- year SDPD veteran Jonathan Wiese, arrived in the area. Reaching the scene of the crash and seeing Brians' pickup upside down in the water, Wiese grabbed a long leash he uses for his service dog, wrapped it around his chest, gave the other end to fellow officers and rappelled down the precipice.Wiese then swam out to the foundering truck and rescued the children and Brians. Medics took all three to hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.RELATED: Officer rescues toddlers after father drives off Sunset CliffsThe GoFundMe page has raised over ,000 since its creation. 2117

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials today identified the San Diego-based Marine at the center of a search in the seas southeast of the Philippines that was called off earlier this week.Cpl. Jonathan Currier, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego's North County, was reported overboard at 9:40 a.m. Thursday while the USS Essex was conducting routine operations in the Sulu Sea.Currier was declared dead on Aug. 17, 13th MEU Capt. Diann Rosenfield said. "Our hearts go out to the Currier family," said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer, 13th MEU. "Cpl. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention.Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on the deputy's younger sibling, Joshua.Prosecutors said Philpot and his group walked past Pitoau, who got into an argument with the deputy's sibling on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m.RELATED: Man convicted of assault with gun in Gaslamp shooting that wounded deputyPitoau testified that he pulled out a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Jason Philpot, were advancing on him. He testified that he and the deputy both grabbed onto the gun, leading it to fire as they grappled over the weapon.Jason Philpot testified that he tried to wrap his arms around Pitoau and get the gun away, but the defendant was able to pull the trigger, wounding the deputy in the chest and right arm. One of the rounds ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck Shvets.Pitoau was arrested about a month later in Mexico.RELATED: Man convicted in Gaslamp shooting involving off-duty deputy sentencedSan Diego County Superior Court Judge Melinda J. Lasater declined to dismiss a number of allegations that added years to Pitoau's sentence due to his numerous prior convictions for crimes dating back to 1991, including burglary, assault, and being a felon in possession of ammunition.Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said Pitoau had demonstrated a history of re-offending each time he was released from prison and that "he knew better" than to bring a gun to the Gaslamp Quarter that day.Defense attorney Jessica Marshall said evidence at trial showed the Philpots and other members of their group had been drinking and were being aggressive, with the attorney arguing Pitoau "is not the only reason this happened."RELATED: Gaslamp deputy shooting suspect escapes Spring Valley SWAT standoffJurors deadlocked on the assault counts in Pitoau's two previous trials, though one of those juries convicted Pitoau on three felony firearm possession counts. 2459
