SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health officials have confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 at an assisted living center in the College Area.On Wednesday, 10News tried to get answers from Stellar Care Center, located just south of the College Area. On Tuesday night, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten revealed that they were looking into a patient at the home who may have tested positive. “Our staff [is] investigating this situation and once it's determined if there's individuals or patients with influenza-like illnesses, the staff there will collect specimen and send them to our lab for testing,” she stated.Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes continues to grow. In Kirkland, Wash., an outbreak of the virus at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Louisiana, seven deaths have been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. 10News reached out to Stellar Care Center and San Diego County for additional information. A spokesperson for San Diego County writes, "I can confirm that there is a positive case of COVID-19 at Stellar Care Assisted Living. Skilled nursing facilities throughout the County have amplified their protocols to address the COVID-19 pandemic using strategies similar to those recommended by the County of San Diego in responding to an influenza outbreak. These protocols include limiting the amount of people in congregant settings (including meals, activities and visitors) while amplifying cleaning and sanitation measures and providing additional training for staff."The State Department of Social Services writes, “In order to protect confidentiality, we are not able confirm or provide details regarding specific individuals or locations.” 1835

Gavin Newsom said Tuesday he's worried about family gatherings around California ahead of the Fourth of July weekend and will announce new measures to dial back reopenings on Wednesday.Newsom said the prospect of family gatherings, not just bars or demonstrations, this weekend has health officers worried about the continued spread of the coronavirus. He added that new measures related to enforcement will also be announced on Wednesday."Tomorrow we will be making some additional announcements on efforts to use that dimmer switch we've referred to and begin to toggle back on our stay-at-home order and tighten things up," Newsom said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter.On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home sales in San Diego are starting to see a dramatic decrease, according to a new report by CoreLogic.Year-to-year, home sales fell nearly 18 percent from September of 2017 to September of 2018. From August to September of this year, home sales fell nearly 22 percent. Since 1988, the average change in sales between August and September is only 9.8 percent.“The nearly 18 percent year-over-year drop in Southern California home sales this September was the largest for any month in almost eight years,” said Andrew LePage, a CoreLogic analyst.Also in September, sales of newly-built homes in Southern California were 46.6 percent below the September average since 1988.The drop in home sales is due to higher prices and rising mortgage rates, according to CoreLogic. Those factors are pricing out some would-be buyers and prompting others to wait and see what happens with the housing market.The median home price in San Diego County in September of 2018 was 5,000, up nearly eight percent from the same time last year, however, the median price fell by 1.4 percent from August to September of 2018.“Price growth is moderating amid slower sales and more listings in many markets,” LePage said. “This is welcome news for potential homebuyers, but many still face a daunting hurdle – the monthly mortgage payment, which has been pushed up sharply by rising mortgage rates.” 1405
