EDINBURG, Texas - A bizarre incident during a high school playoff game in Texas on Thursday left a referee with injuries after being attacked by a player he had just ejected.Edinburg High School defensive end Emmanuel Duron was penalized for shoving another player to the ground and attempting to tackle the opposing team's quarterback after a play was over The Monitor reports.Referee Fred Garcia ejected Duron from the game for the two unsportsmanlike penalties. After Garcia announced the ejection, Duron charged back onto the field and slammed into the referee, causing him to fly back into the artificial turf.Duron's teammates and coaches held the player back while crews attended to Garcia. Four off-duty police officers escorted Duron out of the stadium and away from the premises.Garcia was able to walk off the field on his own and was evaluated in an ambulance outside the stadium. He was reported to have suffered a concussion and a shoulder injury. After the delay, the game resumed and Edinburg ended up defeating Pharr-San Juan-Alamo 35-21 to advance to the playoffs, The Associated Press reported. But on Friday, the team was removed from the playoffs by the school district, the district announced in a statement."The district has decided to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after an unexpected incident involving a student that occurred during a football game on December 3, 2020," the district said. "We extend a sincere apology to the referee and his family. On behalf of the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees and administration, we apologize to the athletes, staff, and our school community. We will take the appropriate disciplinary action once we understand the facts and circumstances underlining this incident. The district takes these matters very seriously; however, we cannot comment further on a pending investigation."Duron was charged Friday with assault and is being held in jail on a ,000 bond. The Monitor reports Duron was suspended from the school's soccer team for a similar incident last season. This story was first reported by Jeff Tavss at KSTU in Salt Lake City, Utah. 2146

DNA researchers are making a big prediction. In just a few years, they'll have enough DNA samples to match every person in the country. That's even if you've never taken one of those ancestry DNA tests. This is all thanks to those ancestry test kits. If someone’s relative takes the test, enough information is provided for scientists to link to you."Yes, eventually everyone's going to be traceable through DNA," says Itsik Pe’er, an associate professor at Columbia University. It also means solving crimes could get a lot easier.  Police have already started taking DNA from unknown suspects and comparing it to DNA databases. That information can lead to a match to a suspect’s relative."People want to connect to their long-lost second, third, fourth cousins and find those matches,” says Pe’er. “The flip side of that is that, yeah, investigators can find those matches due to DNA that have been sitting in these warehouses for decades."Pe'er is the co-author of a study at Columbia University that says scientists only need a 2 percent sample from the roughly 326 million people in the United States to be able to match anyone's DNA.Privacy experts worry that even people who have never committed a crime might not want to be matched to relatives. But it's a fact of science as the DNA sample continues to grow."It's just still incredible to think about, you know, like we live in such a big world, but it's really, really small," Pe’er says.Private companies are working to protect their databases, including places like My Heritage and 23andMe that prohibit forensic use of their databases in their user agreements. 1632

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A news helicopter had what County of San Diego officials called a “troubled” landing in El Cajon Tuesday. The incident with the Bell 206B helicopter was reported about 2:15 p.m. in the parking area of Gillespie Field at 681 Kenney St., Santee Fire reported. Video recorded by the news helicopter appears that it was a normal landing in which the helicopter skids land on a movable platform called a dolly. The dolly can then be pulled into a hangar. It seems from the last seconds of the video clip that one of the helicopter skids may have missed the platform and the chopper then tipped over. When emergency crews arrived, the helicopter was on its side. The pilot was not hurt but the passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said. Hazardous Materials teams were notified of a small fire and fuel spill, according to the County."The aircraft rolled over while landing, caught fire and sustained substantial damage. The degree of damage means this will be classified as an accident," said FAA spokesperson Ian McGregor. The FAA and NTSB will investigate the landing. The news helicopter is operated by a third party and shared by five San Diego media outlets, including 10News. 1235

During her remarks at the DNC on Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez officially endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee — a move that some on social media claimed was an attempt to divide the party and the country. However, Ocasio-Cortez's endorsement was simply a procedural motion and something that DNC organizers had built into the convention schedule. When Sanders dropped out of the presidential race in April, former Vice President Joe Biden and his campaign allowed Sanders to hold on to his delegates as a sign of party unity. As a result, Sanders' delegates could officially cast their votes for the Vermont Democratic Socialist at the convention.Convention rules stipulate that any candidate receiving delegate votes at the convention be formally endorsed for the party's nomination prior to ballots being cast. On Tuesday, both Ocasio-Cortez and former United Auto Workers Union President Bob King formally endorsed Sanders ahead of the roll call vote.In fact, both King's and Ocasio-Cortez's speeches were listed on the DNC's Tuesday night schedule under the heading, "Nominating Speeches for Sen. Bernie Sanders."Ocasio-Cortez herself later clarified her statement in a tweet."I extend my deepest congratulations to @JoeBiden - let's go win in November," she said. 1323
