SYDNEY, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Work is good for health while long term work absence, work disability and unemployment can make us miserable, according to a consensus statement from the Australian and New Zealand doctors on Wednesday.The Australian and New Zealand Consensus Statement on the Health Benefits of Work was launched by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) in Wellington.In the statement, doctors say that work is generally good for health and long term break form work along with unemployment and being unable to work due to disability generally have a negative impact on wellbeing.Work is also an effective means of reducing social exclusion, particularly for indigenous people and other disadvantaged groups, the statement says."Work practices, workplace culture, work-life balance, injury management programs and relationships within workplaces are key determinants, not only of whether people feel valued and supported in their work roles, but also of individual health, wellbeing and productivity," it said."Good outcomes are more likely when individuals understand the health benefits of work, and are empowered to take responsibility for their own situation." the statement said.

WASHINGTON, March 4 (Xinhua) -- New data suggest that the epilepsy drug Topamax (topiramate) and its generic versions increase the risk for the birth defects cleft lip and cleft palate in babies born to women who use the medication during pregnancy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Friday in a statement.Before prescribing topiramate, approved to treat certain types of seizures in people who have epilepsy, health care professionals should warn patients of childbearing age about the potential hazard to the fetus if a woman becomes pregnant while using the drug, the FDA said.Topiramate also is approved to prevent migraine headaches, but not to relieve the pain of migraines."Health care professionals should carefully consider the benefits and risks of topiramate when prescribing it to women of childbearing age," said Russell Katz, director of the Division of Neurology Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Alternative medications that have a lower risk of birth defects should be considered."Cleft lip and cleft palate, collectively called oral clefts, are birth defects that occur when parts of the lip or palate do not completely fuse together early in the first trimester of pregnancy, a time when many women do not know they are pregnant.The defects range from a small notch in the lip to a groove that runs into the roof of the mouth and nose, possibly leading to problems with eating, talking, and to ear infections. Surgery often is performed to close the lip and palate and most children do well after treatment.Data from the North American Antiepileptic Drug (AED) Pregnancy Registry indicate an increased risk of oral clefts in infants exposed to topiramate during the first trimester of pregnancy. Infants exposed to topiramate as a single therapy experienced a 1.4 percent prevalence of oral clefts, compared with a prevalence of 0.38 percent - 0.55 percent in infants exposed to other antiepileptic drugs.Infants of mothers who did not have epilepsy and were not being treated with other antiepileptic drugs had a prevalence of 0.07 percent. Similar data from the United Kingdom Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register supported the North American AED Pregnancy Registry data.According to the FDA, before starting topiramate, pregnant women and women of childbearing potential should discuss other treatment options with their health care professional.

The regulation was signed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Monday and immediately came into effect then.The regulation is aimed to ensure eligible claimants receive state compensation on time and in full.The regulation means governments at all levels must budget for state compensation payouts each year, and if the actual amount of state compensation payouts exceed what is budgeted for, additional funds must be used.The regulation also standardizes the procedure of applying for state compensation.State compensation refers to government pay outs to citizens for damages it has caused them through infringements of their rights.The State Compensation Law of China took effect since 1995.

Why wouldn't I be happy?" asked Xia.She and her family lived in a makeshift house for two years before moving into their new house one month ago.Dong Depa, 43, and his family moved into their new house in Yingxiu Town, the epicenter of the quake, five days ago."I can pay off the debt incurred to build the house in two years," said Dong, who spent only 30,000 yuan (4,541 U.S. dollars) for the house's construction and decoration, with the rest being shouldered by the government.Dong lost his two children in the quake but he and his wife have since had another child, a son."Last year, we spent the Spring Festival in the dormitory of the brick factory where I work as a cook. Now we can finally enjoy the festival in our own home," said Dong, unable to conceal his joy.Xia told Xinhua the ceremony for the new county seat was the real taste for a happy new year.Reconstruction has finished in the quake-hit zones in Sichuan, with most survivors now in their new houses.In Beichuan County alone, 96.5 percent of the survivors already have their new house.The new county seat is located in Yongchang Town, about 23 kilometers from the quake-leveled old one.The 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China on May 12, 2008, leaving about 80,000 people dead or missing.Waving goodbye to their temporary barracks, 7,397 households have been allocated new apartments, among which 3,504 households were former Beichuan residents, while others were from different Wenchuan earthquake-hits regions."The new apartment has already been simply decorated by the time I received the door key.
