SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of Clairemont neighbors attended a public hearing Wednesday to learn why their neighborhood was picked for a new homeless housing project.A developer wants to convert former office space on 5858 Mt. Alifan Drive into roughly 50 apartments for the homeless. The location is near the Vons shopping plaza.“It’s just not acceptable. I’m not against homeless shelters by any means but this is not the proper location,” said Mark Bromley. He believes the site is too close to homes and schools.San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate said the developer has not yet applied for a permit to start the project. Cate told 10News he can’t give his opinion on the project in case the issue goes before the Council.Organizers shut down the planned open house after more than 200 people attended due to possible fire code violations given the size of the crowd.Another informational meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday at a larger location. 973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former San Diego deputy Richard Fischer has been released from jail months after being sentenced to nearly four years in jail after pleading guilty to multiple assault charges. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Fischer was released earlier in May on custody credits. "On May 15, 2020 the San Diego County Sheriff's Department received an order from the Superior Court setting forth the custody credits for Richard Fischer," the department said. Fischer was sentenced to 44 months in jail in December of 2019, followed by 16 months of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to four felony counts of assault under the color of authority, two misdemeanor counts of assault under the color of authority, and one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment. The charges stemmed from attacks on 16 women, City News Service previously reported. Fischer was accused of assaulting women while on duty between 2015 and 2017. The victims said Fischer groped, hugged or tried to kiss them. Fischer originally faced 20 felony and misdemeanor charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doctors across San Diego shared mixed emotions of despair and hope this week, as San Diego's COVID-19 cases surge while front line workers get the first doses of a vaccine."This is actually a really difficult time right now," says Dr. Holly Yang, the President of the San Diego County Medical Society. "Our hospitals are getting quite full and staff is getting really stretched.""It's tiring," says Dr. William Tseng, an Internist at Kaiser Permanente Hospitals. "But, as health professionals, we're here to take care of patients."They say this week has been particularly hard, as an influx of people who contracted the virus during the Thanksgiving holiday threatens to overwhelm the system."It gets tough," says Dr. Karrar Ali, an Emergency Room Physician at Sharp Chula Vista. "Now we're starting to make decisions based upon capacity... That's tough, when your resources start dwindling to the point where it's not just beds, but we're having staffing issues as well."Dr. Yang says, even as bad as things look right now, with the Southern California all but out of ICU beds, doctors in the SDCMS take hope from the vaccine."There's a light at the end of the tunnel," she says. Using data provided by the company Truebill, Lendedu analyzed which companies tend to be more generous in negotiating with customers.Satellite service providers were analyzed in the report. Customers of SiriusXM had the highest success rate in negotiations, according to Lendedu. Consumers had negotiation success rates in the 80s with three other companies, Suddenlink, Centurylink, and Dish Network, the report showed.The study went on to note, “When it came to how much companies actually knocked off the average customer’s bill, SiriusXM once again led the way; the average SiriusXM customer was able to decrease that monthly charge by 40 percent or more.
