High school students across the country could soon receive training on how to stop bleeding during an incident like a school shooting, and the federal government is offering a big grant to make this happen.This week, Clay High School in Oregon, Ohio became one of the few schools to add Stop the Bleed kits in 90 classrooms, thanks to the proposal of student Nick McNeal.McNeal brought the idea to his school’s student government program, and after much persistence, his school passed out the kits to all teachers earlier this week."Now it's a matter of, how can we keep our kids safe in addition to education," says school principal James Jurski.Now, the Department of Homeland Security wants to make sure even more teachers and students are prepared to do what they can to minimize casualties in the event of a school shooting. Officials are offering .8 million to anyone who can come up with a trauma-training program that could be utilized on a national scale.The program, called “School-Age Trauma Training (SATT),” seeks to “deliver free to the public, lifesaving trauma training to high school age students for mass casualty events.”Jurski says in 2018, it's just a necessity that schools prepare for these situations, but he admitted it is frustrating that it has come to this.“Every teacher in the building went into education to educate students,” explains Jurski. “And I don't think there’s a time, at least when I went to school, where safety was even mentioned in our training. HAMPTON, Va. — Students and teachers across Hampton Roads are preparing to start the school year virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That means empty classrooms for a lot of teachers in the area, including Kecoughtan High School."Now it's a little bit different because you're looking around and going, 'Hey, they're not going to be filled,'" said Mark Mingee, a history and government teacher at the school and a 20-year teaching veteran. "I'm going to be looking at a screen to see their faces, as opposed to seeing them right in front of me."But Mingee is making his classroom a little fuller. He created a fundraiser where people can donate to a scholarship fund and have their picture shown on a desk.Mingee, an avid sports fan, said he got the idea after seeing several leagues around the world fill empty stands with cardboard cutouts."You started to see these images on screens various places, or in the transition of cardboard cutouts of people in the stands," he said. "The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, if I'm going to be in my classroom, and I want there to be people around me, the best thing to do is try to emulate that in some way.'"So far, he said many friends, alumni and current students have taken part."We're used to, as teachers, having each one of those seats filled. So, as it appears those seats are filled, it makes you feel like a normal, everyday moment in class," Mingee said. It made me unhappy that that was happening," said London.So the budding artist picked up her canvas and paintbrush and expressed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement the best way she knows how -- by painting.Then she turned those paintings into t-shirt designs."A bunch of people were really happy that I started this movement with the t-shirts and everybody was buying them and buying them and buying them," said London.London's "Support Shirts" campaign was shared so much online that it blew up."At first, I only expected to sell like 15 shirts at the most. (AP) — A California man has been arrested over allegations that he and his partners ran a billion Ponzi scheme that targeted people receiving pensions.News outlets report the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Future Income Payments LLC owner Scott Kohn on Saturday in San Diego. The 65-year-old has been on the run since March when authorities in South Carolina secured fraud indictments against him.Court filings say the company provided cash advances to veterans and others that would then be repaid by their pensions. Traders weren't told the advances had interest rates that could top 240%.
