KILLEEN, TX — A suspect in a Fort Hood Criminal Investigation Division (CID) case died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound just as officers attempted to make contact with him early Wednesday morning.The Army has since confirmed the incident is linked to the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen.Officers with the Killeen Police Department with the assistance of U.S. Marshals located the suspect at around 1:30 a.m. local time.Officers, along with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, located the suspect in the 4700 block of East Rancier Avenue — about 10 miles from Fort Hood. The Killeen Police Department says as officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, he pulled out a gun and shot it towards himself. The suspect later died.The incident came hours after Army CID agents announced they had found human remains while searching for Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, a soldier who went missing from the base on April 22. (KGTV) - The Granite Lion Cellars in Jamul will break ground Wednesday on a new tasting room and wine cave, adding to their expanding vineyard and winery in the East County."We've been waiting for this for quite a while," says Tasting Room Manager Miriam Valdez. "I"m over the moon that it's finally happening."The multi-million dollar expansion will help Granite Lion deal with the increase of customers they've seen over the past year. Sommelier David Whited says they've gone from about ten visitors each week to 150.It's an excellent problem to have, and one that is spreading up and down Highway 94. "You can do it here, 20 minutes from downtown."The new wine cave and tasting room are the latest sign that the region is gaining in popularity. The first tasting room in the area opened in 2014. "It's away from the busy hustle and bustle of the city. You can enjoy nature. JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A squirrel found in Morrison, Colorado, on July 11 tested positive for the bubonic plague.This is the first known case of the plague in the county this year, according to Jefferson County Public Health. It's not an uncommon sickness to see in rodents year to year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scientists believe the plague bacteria circulates in low rates of rodent populations regularly.The department did not release any other information on the animal.Both humans and household animals can become infected with the plague without proper precautions.Humans may become sick with the plague through bites from infected fleas, a cough from an infected animal, or direct contact — such as a bite — with the blood or tissue of an infected animal, according to the health department.Dogs and cats are also susceptible to the plague, though cats are more vulnerable to it. While dogs may pick up and carry plague-infected rodent fleas, cats can contract the plague from flea bites and can die without treatment and antibiotics. If you believe your pet is sick, call your veterinarian. Jefferson County Public Health also recommends talking to your vet about flea prevention if you live near wild animals, including prairie dog colonies.Symptoms of the plague include:· Sudden onset of high fever· Chills· Headache· Nausea· Extreme pain and swelling of lymph nodes, within two to seven days after exposureIt can be treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early.
