ROME, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Wednesday evening with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.     Before meeting with Berlusconi, Wu also met with Italian Senate President Renato Schifani Wednesday morning and signed an agreement on establishing a mechanism of regular exchanges between the Chinese NPC and the Italian Senate.     During his meetings with Italian leaders in Rome, Wu expressed the willingness of strengthening economic cooperation with Italy as a way to counter the impact of international financial crisis.     In an earlier meeting with Chinese entrepreneurs who are doing business in Italy, Wu said the financial crisis has brought about new opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and Italian companies.     The Italian leaders expressed the willingness to expand cooperation with China in various fields, saying China's economic growth will hopefully provide new energy for the recovery and rally of world economy.     Both sides agreed that the two countries should coordinate their stance on reform of the international financial system and work for an early recovery of global economy from the financial crisis.     China saw an economic growth of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of this year, the lowest quarterly figure in years. Meanwhile, the European Union economy dropped 4.6 percent in the same period.     China and Italy have maintained a sound momentum in bilateral links. The two sides have consolidated political trust and maintained close communication and coordination on major international issues.     Leaders of the two countries have maintained contact on a regular basis. Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi visited China last October and met with Chinese President Hu Jintao. During the meeting, he said Italy places importance on China's role in international affairs and wish to cooperation with China to counter the impact of international financial crisis.     In recent years, the two countries have kept optimizing structure of trade and expanded investment. Bilateral cooperation in science, technology and environment protection have achieved good results.     China held a Year of Italian Culture last year. In a gesture of embracing China as a huge market and potential source of investment, Italy is to hold a "Year of China" in 2010.     Italy has decided to participate in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, while it has won the host of the 2015 World Expo. BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Portugal agreed here Wednesday to enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation.     Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Portuguese parliament speaker Jaime Gama on Wednesday.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, spoke highly of China-Portugal relations and noted that China always conducted its ties with Portugal from a strategic, long-term perspective and is ready to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama sent messages respectively to the United States' National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) Thursday, wishing its performance in China a success.     "I am pleased to extend my warm welcome to all the visiting artists from the United States," Hu said in the message. He recalled the NSO's first visit to China in 1999, saying it "left a beautiful impression to the Chinese audience."     Hu hailed the Symphony's second visit to China at the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations. He said music can help to "refine sentiment of humankind and promote communication between people's hearts of different countries."     "I believe that music from across the Pacific Ocean will enhance the mutual understanding between our two peoples and certainly write a new chapter in the long run of friendship between us," Hu said.     He also wished the performances of the NSO a great success.     In his message, Obama extended a heartfelt welcome to all those attending this performance of the NSO as it tours the People's Republic of China for the second time.     "Music has been called a universal language, " said Obama. It plans to give a series of concerts in Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai and perform the renowned works of Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Wagner for the Chinese audience.

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The international community has continued to condemn the July 5 riots in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which has left 192 people dead.     Religious leaders and some experts also voiced support for the joint efforts by the Chinese government and various ethnic groups to safeguard ethnic unity and social stability.     Regional leaders of two major Islamic organizations -- Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah -- in the Indonesian city of Surabaya said Islam advocates peace and opposes violence.     Muslims love peace, pursue peace and take real actions to maintain peace and oppose any violent and terrorist actions, they said Tuesday while meeting Wang Huagen, Chinese general consulate in Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city.     The two Islamic leaders also expressed the hope that social order in Urumqi could be restored soon.     Pierre Picard, a human geologist and China expert at the University of Paris, said he was shocked by the July 5 incident which was a violent crime orchestrated by foreign terrorists and separatist forces.     China has the right to take actions to maintain national stability and restore social order and the measures it has taken were appropriate, he told Xinhua.     No country in the world can tolerate attacks by terrorist forces, he added.     The Al-Riyadh newspaper, one of the leading newspapers in Saudi Arabia, said in a report on Tuesday that the July 5 incident in Xinjiang was a crime of violence that was premeditated and organized.     The unrest was not an ethnic issue nor a religious one, but a case against public order incited by a few separatists and mobs, it stressed.     Bahrain's Al-Ayam newspaper shared the view. In     a report published on Tuesday, it said the incident was by no means an ethnic or religious issue, but a grave violent crime involving beating,     smashing, looting and burning premeditated, organized and instigated by the separatist forces both in and outside China.     The purpose of the separatists is to sabotage ethnic unity and social stability in Xinjiang, said the report.     The local government of the autonomous region has adopted effective measures in accordance with law to stop the violent crimes in a bid to safeguard social stability and resume normal social order as well as protect local people's rights and interests, it said.     The report said that the Chinese government had introduced and carried out a series of ethnic and religious policies since the People's Republic of China was established.     China always sticks to the principle of protecting ethnic minorities equal rights and safeguarding ethnic solidarity, and is firmly opposed to ethnic discrimination and oppression of any ethnic group as well as any activities aimed at undermining ethnic unity, it said.     China has always valued the role played by Islamic countries and attached great importance to its friendly relations with them, the report said, adding that such relations will be further cemented through joint efforts by both sides.

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, on Wednesday discussed bilateral relations and the A/H1N1 flu epidemic during a telephone conversation.     Hu recalled that during their meeting at the Group of 20 summit in London in early April, he and Obama agreed to work together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century.     The two leaders also reached extensive consensus on the establishment of the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues, joint efforts to tackle the international financial crisis, and enhanced coordination and cooperation on major global and regional issues, Hu said.     "Now, both countries are seriously implementing the consensus," the Chinese president said.     "China is willing to work with the United States to push for a healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations," he said.     Obama, for his part, said the meeting with Hu was important because it outlined the future development of bilateral cooperation and made a good start on the China-U.S. strategic dialogue.     The United States appreciated China's efforts to promote bilateral relations, he said.     The Chinese president expressed sincere condolences over the A/H1N1 flu epidemic that has hit parts of the United States, and said the Chinese government has started emergency measures to prevent a spread of the disease.     "We are willing to keep contact with the World Health Organization, the United States and other parties concerned, and strengthen cooperation to jointly confront this public health challenge," Hu said.     Obama said his country has adopted effective measures against the disease and will continue to keep a close eye on the outbreak.     The U.S. president said he was looking forward to meeting with Hu again during a meeting of leaders of the Group of Eight nations and developing countries in Italy. Obama said he was also looking forward to visiting China.     The two leaders also exchanged views on such issues as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the situation in South Asia.
