SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed a lawsuit today against the Trump administration over its plan to begin construction on a border wall in San Diego and Imperial counties.Speaking to reporters at Border Field State Park, Becerra said he filed a complaint in federal court in San Diego that alleges legal and constitutional violations. He said the lawsuit was filed on behalf of the state and California Coastal Commission."The border between the U.S. and Mexico spans some 2,000 miles -- the list of laws violated by the president's administration in order to build this campaign wall is almost as long," Becerra said. "The Department of Homeland Security would waive 37 federal statutes, as well as regulations that 757

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Leaders of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor plan to announce Monday whether they will endorse a potential strike by grocery workers at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions in San Diego County and the rest of Southern California.Raising the threat of the first Southland grocery strike in nearly 16 years, grocery workers last week overwhelmingly authorized their union to call for a work stoppage if a contract agreement cannot be reached.``Southern California grocery workers voted in large numbers, and overwhelmingly rejected the unfair terms that have been proposed by Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons,'' said John Grant, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770.The voting was conducted Monday and Tuesday, Grant said. Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions issued a statement saying, ``The outcome of the strike authorization vote does not change anything related to this process. We remain committed to negotiating a contract that is fair to all parties, including our employees, and will continue to work to achieve that.'' Ralphs issued a similar statement and said, for now, ``it is business as usual in Ralphs stores.''The strike authorization vote means union negotiators have the power to call for a strike, if deemed necessary, but it does not automatically mean a walkout will occur. The next bargaining sessions involving the union and the companies are scheduled for July 10, 11, and 12, Grant said. The contract between the union and the companies expired in March. That pact was approved by workers in 2016 and included annual raises for most workers, along with increased pay for entry-level cashiers and concessions on holiday pay and retirement age, union officials said at the time.On Wednesday, union officials said the most recent contract offer made by the grocery companies included wage increases of less than 1 percent and nearly 25 percent cuts in cashier wages. The labor dispute raises fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. That work stoppage was estimated by some analysts to have cost the supermarket chains as much as billion, with locked-out workers losing 0 million in wages. 2202

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An attempted murder charge was filed Wednesday against a woman who slit the throat of another woman at a Mira Mesa Walgreens store last weekend, in what has been described as a random attack on a complete stranger.Kelly Ann Green, 55, is accused in Saturday morning's attack on an unidentified 59-year-old woman, who suffered a five-inch laceration across her neck.Green faces 10 years in state prison if convicted of the attempted murder charge and a weapon-use allegation, according to Deputy San Diego County District Attorney Mary Naoom. The prosecutor said the victim was filling her prescription at the Walgreens at 10787 Camino Ruiz when Green approached her, grabbed her by the hair and cut her throat.RELATED: Mira Mesa family forced from home after multiple attacksOther store patrons and employees subdued Green following the attack, which was captured on ``gruesome and very disturbing'' surveillance footage, Naoom said. A suspected motive for the attack was not disclosed. The victim was treated at a hospital, but has since been released.Green, who pleaded not guilty to all charges Wednesday afternoon, is due back in court Dec. 13 for a readiness conference. She's being held in lieu of million bail. 1244

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who sexually assaulted three women, some of whom were unconscious during the acts, was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.Juan Carlos Cordero, 37, pleaded guilty in September to three felony sexual assault counts stemming from allegations that he assaulted women he met on dating sites or in person between 2015 and 2019.Cordero pleaded guilty to penetration of an unconscious victim by a foreign object, forcible sodomy and sodomy of an unconscious victim, with each count corresponding to women identified only as Jane Does 1 through 3.RELATED: San Diego women face their accused rapist at preliminary hearingSome of the victims alleged they may have been drugged by the defendant and testified during a preliminary hearing last year that while with Cordero, they blacked out and woke up in his bed, with little to no recollection of the previous night. Many testified that they discovered they'd suffered injuries that led them to believe they had been sexually assaulted. Some women testified they felt drugged the following morning but had no memory of how that may have occurred, while others testified that Cordero forced alcohol or drugs on them.RELATED: Sex assault suspect may have more victims, San Diego Police sayIn addition to the three victims Cordero pleaded guilty to assaulting, testimony also came from several other women alleging he committed similar acts on them, as state law allows testimony from alleged victims of defendants charged with sexual offenses in order to establish a pattern of behavior.Cordero was arrested in March 2019.Following his arrest and the District Attorney's Office filing of felony charges, San Diego police put a call out for any potential victims, stating that Cordero had been known to identify himself as "J.C." to young women in the area. 1895

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Wednesday for help in identifying a man seen fleeing the scene of a deadly shooting in the Chollas Creek neighborhood.Officers responding to reports of gunfire near Colina Park Golf Course about 2:30 p.m. Friday found 26-year-old Lazaro Orozco mortally wounded in the 4000 block of 52nd Street, according to San Diego police. Medics took Orozco to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.A man believed to be the shooter was seen running out of the area to the west following the shooting, Lt. Matthew Dobbs said. The suspect was described as a roughly 5-foot-7-inch Latino in his 20s or early 30s, wearing plaid shorts, a white shirt, a blue jacket, white tennis shoes and what appeared to be a cast or bandage on his left arm.Investigators believe the deadly shooting occurred during a roadside fight between the two men. The reason for the dispute was unclear.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org.
