A total of 13 people linked to a militia group have been charged by the federal government and the state of Michigan in to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Six men — Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta — were charged by the federal government, according to a criminal complaint from the FBI. Croft is from Delaware; the rest are Michigan residents.Additionally, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that seven other people, linked to the Michigan-based militia group "Wolverine Watchmen" have been charged by the state in relation to the plot.According to the FBI's complaint, the militia attempted to recruit members for the operation, which included storming the Capitol building in Lansing and taking hostages, including Whitmer. The suspects, now under arrest, are alleged to have called on the groups’ members to identify the home addresses of law enforcement officers in order to target them; made threats of violence to instigate a civil war leading to societal collapse; and engaged in the planning and training for an operation to attack the state Capitol building and kidnap government officials, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. In total, 19 state felony charges were filed by the Attorney General against seven individuals known to be members of the militia group, Wolverine Watchmen or associates of Wolverine Watchmen. The plan was reportedly supposed to be executed before the November 2020 election. The militia group reportedly held several meetings over the summer, where they participated in firearms training and combat drills.According to the complaint, they also attempted to build IED devices, which were faulty and did not detonate as planned. The group then reportedly decided to abduct the governor at her vacation home in western Michigan and take her to a secure location in Wisconsin for "trial."In August, federal officials say the group allegedly conducted surveillance of her home on two occasions. On Wednesday night, the FBI and Michigan State Police spent hours raiding a home in Hartland, Michigan — a town about an hour west of Detroit — on Wednesday night, which continued into the early morning of Thursday. The house is located on Lansing Avenue in Hartland Meadows near M-59 in Livingston County.Several Michigan State Police vehicles, including their SWAT team, were also on scene alongside FBI agents. Some officers were dressed in camo gear carrying guns. U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge said the suspects were conducting a meeting regarding the plot at the time of the raid."Those of us in Michigan can disagree about politics, but those disagreements should never end in violence," U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider said. This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 2778

A migrant rescue ship has docked in Malta after being stranded for days in the Mediterranean amid a diplomatic dispute over which country should accept the 141 migrants on board. The migrants, including two pregnant women and 67 unaccompanied minors, disembarked from the Aquarius Wednesday at Senglea, a port city in Malta. They will soon be sent to locations in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Portugal, which have agreed to take them. The mood on board was jubilant as the ship neared the port, according to video tweeted by charity Doctors without Borders (MSF). The images also showed a large sign suspended on an outside wall at the port that read, "Everyone has the right to life."In another video, upbeat music can be heard blaring as the ship docked. Images show mothers leading their children down the gangway, and migrants hugging crew members goodbye. 876

A proposed bill to ban non-medically required male circumcision on babies and children in Iceland is receiving backlash from religious communities."Those procedures are unnecessary, done without their informed consent, non-reversible and can cause all kinds of severe complications, disfigurations and even death," said Icelandic Progressive Party MP Silja D?gg Gunnarsdottir. She said a child should be old enough to give "informed consent" for the procedure and defended the proposed ban as being about protecting children's rights, adding that it would "not go against the religious right of their parents."The European Jewish Congress (EJC), condemned the bill saying the ban would be an "effective deterrent" that would "guarantee that no Jewish community will be established" in the country."Iceland would be the only country to ban one of the most central, if not the most central rite in the Jewish tradition in modern times," the EJC statement said, adding that this would "attack Judaism in a way that concerns Jews all over the world."One in three men globally are estimated to be circumcised, with the majority for religious and cultural reasons. If the ban were to come into effect it would be a "violation to the right of religious freedom," according to Imam Ahmad Seddeeq of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Iceland, who estimates the country's Muslim community to have "at least" 2,500 members."People who believe in something try to do it as long as it is legal, if it's not legal here they will do it in [their] home countries or other countries," Seddeeq told CNN.A 2012 review by the American academy of pediatrics found the health benefits of circumcision to outweigh the risks, though not great enough to recommend the procedure become routine."The health benefits of circumcision include lower risks of acquiring HIV, genital herpes, human papilloma virus and syphilis. Circumcision also lowers the risk of penile cancer over a lifetime; reduces the risk of cervical cancer in sexual partners, and lowers the risk of urinary tract infections in the first year of life," the group said at the time of the review. However, the study also found the procedure poses risks such as "bleeding and swelling."In 2012, a judge in Cologne, Germany made a similar ruling that religious circumcision amounted to bodily harm against a child who has no say in the matter. The decision came in a case involving a 4-year-old boy who experienced complications following the practice. The judge ruled that a child's right to physical integrity outweighed the desire of his parents to have him circumcised for religious reasons. The new bill in Iceland - where female circumcision was banned by law in 2005 - was put forward by representatives from four of Iceland's political parties arguing that while many children do not have any complications, some do and "one is too many if the procedure is unnecessary," said Gunnarsdottir. It is "uncertain" when discussions on the bill about boys will conclude and what the outcome of the vote will be, she said.  3066

A public school administrator in Nashville has resigned following the disclosure of a secret recording where he plotted to bypass filters designed to protect children from exposure to lead in their water.Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) executive director of facilities Dennis Neal, resigned Friday, according to MNPS communications director Olivia Brown. Neal had been placed on administrative leave while the district investigated.Neal's resignation came less than a week after Scripps station WTVF in Nashville?uncovered the recording from inside a meeting of schools maintenance employees.Recording Reveals Plan To 'Bypass' Lead FilterFor the past nine months, WVTF has exposed data kept secret by the district showing high lead levels in some Metro schools. Lead is a toxic metal that can cause learning and behavioral problems in children. In response, a number of schools installed special fountains that were supposed to filter out the lead. Some of them were purchased by parents themselves. But the recording revealed Neal's plan to dismantle those efforts.Listen to the audio below:"People keep wanting these bottle fillers, but they are adamant about them being filtered," Neal told his employees. "I'm saying we cannot support it.From the beginning, Neal downplayed the threat posed by lead in the schools' drinking water  -- despite results showing levels well above what pediatricians say is safe. Audio Sparks Outrage, Mayor Calls For AnswerStill, some 30 schools installed hydration stations specifically designed to filter out the lead — some of them purchased by the parents themselves. On the recording, Neal revealed: "I did ask Troy if he would have one of his guys go through the exercise of bypassing the filter just to see how that works."But those fountains are equipped with lights that show when the filters are working and when they need to be replaced. So Neal's team came up with a solution for that, too."We've got to figure out what we are going to do with these hundred, or 97, filtered ones that we have out there," Neal told his subordinates. An unidentified woman interrupted, "Bust the light out.""Huh, do what?" Neal asked."Take the light bulb out," she answered."Well, that's one thing," Neal agreed. "But we need to also probably, if we can, bypass the filter."Neal's concern was money.MNPS Spokesperson Questions Need For Filters"If we were to replace a filter, you're talking — I don't know if any of y'all have bought them  — it's something like 70 or 80 bucks," Neal said.An unidentified man responded, "."Neal said, "That's almost ,000 a year just for filters, OK, on what we have now."After disclosure of the record, Schools Director Dr. Shawn Joseph condemned the comments captured on the recording."As a parent of two Metro Schools children and as the Director of Schools, the idea that a supervisor would discuss a workaround on our water fountains knowing that this is a huge concern for many families is upsetting and unacceptable," Joseph said.Nashville Mayor David Briley also said that "obviously, if the report is true, that person shouldn't  be responsible for protecting our children from lead in their drinking water."  3312

A teacher's assistant handbook is causing some controversy at the University of Maryland. The handbook was meant for Computer Science TA's and had separate instructions for both men and women. Now, some people are saying the comments made inside are sexist. It tells the women their students may have trouble accepting they are in the scientific field because it's a male associated activity. The handbook continues to say this is good practice for the real world because students may not be the only ones having trouble accepting women as a professional. 607
