SAN DIEGO — A couple who evacuated from the Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles says their Airbnb hosts kicked them out of their unit and cleaned out all their belongings, forcing them to live with relatives in San Diego.Ben and Jessica Wells said they rented out the Airbnb unit in July, paying in advance through May.The newlywed couple had been living there as they searched for a home to buy.It was a studio apartment located in West Hills, a community on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, which backed up to where the Woolsey Fire was burning.“I could see the fire burning on the hill. I saw the smoke,” said Ben, who got an evacuation alert on his phone while at the gym.He went home to meet his wife, frantically packing up some important belongings.“We were not trying to check out of the place at all. Obviously things were a mess, clothes were everywhere. We were just trying to basically make sure we had everything we needed just in case everything burnt,” said Jessica.After they left, the Airbnb hosts contacted them to see if they could go inside the unit and turn off the lights. Ben said he agreed to let them in for that purpose.But once inside, owners Larry and Jeri Hannah said they were shocked by what they saw.“I don’t even know how they were living there,” said Larry. “We couldn’t believe the mess we saw.”In addition to the clothes scattered about, the Hannahs say the grout on the tile floor in the bathroom had been stained black. They said the walls needed painting and some of the flooring needed to be replaced.“When It became obvious that we weren’t going to let them come back then we just decided we were going to clean it up because we didn’t want to leave it like that,” said Larry.In order to do that, they removed all of the Wells’ belongings and told them the rest of their reservation had been canceled.The Wells said they agreed to pay through the end of November if they could keep their stuff there. But when Ben arrived on November 17, he said he was surprised to see their belongings strewn across the property.Expensive recording equipment had been left outside, he said. Other belongings had been thrown in trash bags. Some appeared to be missing.“At that point I was in shock, just completely shaken,” said Ben.He grabbed what he could find, not knowing that more of their belongings had been stored in a shed on the property.“Their stuff is all still here,” said Larry.In a statement, a spokesperson with Airbnb wrote, “We are urgently investigating this incident to better understand what happened. There have been more than 400 million guest arrivals in Airbnb listings to date and negative incidents are extremely rare.”  2704

SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) - With their backs to the wall, facing elimination, an unforgiving heat, and trying to stave off fatigue from a rigorous schedule, the Park View Little League all-stars survived to play another game at the West Regional tournament in San Bernardino.Keyed by slugger Jose Mendoza and stellar pitching by Kainoa Baptista, the Green Monsters kept their postseason run alive while ending the Arizona Sunnyside Little League's hopes of advancing.  The squad from Chula Vista defeated Sunnyside 9-5 in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon.PVLL, which suffered its first loss of the postseason on Monday, took an early 3-0 lead on a first-inning three-run blast to right center by Mendoza.The Southern California champs broke the game open in the third inning.  Down two outs with runners on first and second, Aiden Skinner punched a deep single to right field scoring Jordan Bleisch.The long inning and blistering 108-degree heat seemed to wear down Arizona starting pitcher Cristobal Lorta.  Lorta started struggling with his form allowing Park View to extend their lead 7-0 on two wild pitches with runners on third and an RBI single to Conner Alonzo.Sunnyside's decision to keep Lorta on the mound in the fourth inning backfired when the leadoff batter, Ivan Rodriguez Jr., ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double. Cronenworth’s hit gave ace Chris Paddack his first career win against the Dodgers. Cronenworth also made several nice plays at first base, where he made his fifth start. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Utah family that ordered free coronavirus masks through a state program say they were sent politically-charged face coverings featuring a handgun and a controversial slogan.Christine Passey-Spencer of Rose Park says she ordered the masks through a sate program, "A Mask for Every Utahn." Since April, the campaign has used federal COVID-19 money to purchase more than 2 million masks from local and international manufacturers to limit the spread of the virus."I was just shocked," Passey-Spencer said.The two masks feature an American flag with a handgun printed across the front. The face coverings also feature the slogan "Don't Tread on Me," written below a coiled rattlesnake."I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this, and this is very politically-charged speech," Passey-Spencer said.The Gadsden Flag — the inspiration for the snake and "Don't Tread on Me" slogan — was first used in the Revolutionary War. But in recent years, the image has been co-opted by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists. In 2016, it was deemed to have "racially-tinged" messaging in some contexts by the federal government. More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights."We hope this is an isolated incident; that we just missed these couple of masks," said Ben Hart, who oversees Utah's mask program for the Governor's Office of Economic Development.Hart admits about 100 of the "Don't Tread on Me" masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them "inappropriate" and attempted to set all of them aside."We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A health executive and the mayor of Poway were clinging to narrow leads Wednesday in their bids to claim open seats on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, while an incumbent was on the verge of being voted out.District 1 board members Greg Cox and District 2's Dianne Jacob are both termed out, meaning the board will have at least two new members.Cox, a Republican, has been in office since 1995, representing the district that includes National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado, along with 19 communities within the city of San Diego, including Barrio Logan and Sunset Cliffs. It also features the unincorporated communities of Bonita, East Otay Mesa, Lincoln Acres and Sunnyside.Nora Vargas, a health executive, expanded on an early lead in the race to replace him, securing 54.6% of the vote to 45.4% for state Sen. Ben Hueso.Both Vargas and Hueso are Democrats.Hueso, a former San Diego City Council member, has represented Senate District 40 since 2013.Vargas is a vice president of Planned Parenthood of the Southwest and also serves on the Southwest Community College board.The District 2 race, meanwhile, had Poway Mayor Steve Vaus with a narrow 50.6% to 49.4% lead over fellow Republican and former state lawmaker Joel Anderson.The termed-out Jacob, also a Republican, joined the Board of Supervisors in 1993.
