Happy Bobby Bonilla Day, New York Mets fans. The former major league baseball player gets a check for nearly .2 million Mets every July 1.Not a bad retirement plan.Under his contract, he gets the check every year until 2035, when he'll be 72.The Mets wanted to part ways with Bonilla in 1999, but he still had million left on his contract.Mets owner Fred Wilpon negotiated a deal to defer payments until 2011, followed by the annual payments, plus, an 8% annual interest rate. Why the deferment? So the Mets could invest the money with now-disgraced financier Bernie Madoff for a big return. But it turned out Madoff was running the most notorious Ponzi scheme in history, and the Mets ended up among the victims. In total, Bonilla will end up with .8 million because of Wilpon's huge bad call. And in 2012, Wilpon paid 2 million to Madoff victims' fund after auditors found he actually profited from the Ponzi scheme. 931

Hold off on that funeral dirge for Macy's. The department store isn't dead yet.Macy's topped Wall Street's profit forecasts Tuesday and provided a healthy outlook for this year. The results strongly suggest there is still room for traditional stores in the mall in a world increasingly dominated by the likes of Amazon and Walmart.Macy's chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette said the company was "encouraged" by improvement at the company's brick-and-mortar stores and continued growth in online sales.Gennette said digital revenue posted a double-digit percentage increase for the 34th quarter in a row, a run of more than eight years. And the company is still investing heavily in its Bluemercury chain of specialty beauty stores and the discount outlet Backstage. Macy's said it opened 36 Bluemercury stores and 30 Backstage stores last year, even as it closed 16 Macy's stores.Gennette added during a conference call with analysts that Macy's plans to open 100 more Backstage locations this year, including in malls.Macy's is also selling real estate to shore up its balance sheet. The company said it raised 1 million last year and .3 billion over the past three years by getting rid of some stores, warehouses and parking garages.Macy's is also working with real estate company Brookfield Asset Management on other transactions.Macy's said Tuesday it is selling several floors in its State Street store in Chicago to a real estate fund backed by Brookfield for million. Brookfield plans to convert the floors into office space. All this is good news for Macy's. But one analyst said Macy's needs to do more before its turnaround qualifies as a true Miracle on 34th Street."There is a long tail of shops that look dated, are in sub-optimal locations, and where the customer experience is poor. Macy's must remedy this if it is to transform the business," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said in a report.Nonetheless, the real estate transactions and improved sales outlook are two reasons Wall Street has fallen in love with Macy's again. The stock surged nearly 12% in early trading before pulling back a bit. Macy's has soared more than 45% in the past six months.Department store chains Kohl's, Nordstrom and JCPenney — which will all report results later this week — rallied as well Tuesday. Another chain, Dillard's, rose 12% too after it also posted strong quarterly results.Investors are clearly betting that Macy's wasn't the only traditional retailer that had a happy holiday season. 2527
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A 5-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after she was attacked by a bear overnight in east Orchard Mesa. The girl had gone outside around 2:30 a.m. early Sunday to investigate noises she thought were being made by her dog, the girl’s mother told Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers. But the girl’s mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a “large black bear” dragging her daughter, CPW officials said. The bear dropped the girl after her mother screamed at it. Their home is in the east Orchard Mesa area, above the Colorado River corridor, officials said. The girl was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction with serious injuries, CPW said. Radio traffic from first responders said she had been bitten on her back and near her head.Officers were tracking the bear, along with federal wildlife officials, on Sunday morning. CPW said area residents could expect to see law enforcement officials and hounds in the area, and ask anyone to report bear sightings to officials. 1045
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's governor says that starting Oct. 15, travelers arriving from out of state may bypass a 14-day quarantine requirement if they test negative for COVID-19.Travelers will have to take the test within 72 hours before their flight arrives in the islands. The governor, David Ige, says drug store operator CVS and healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente will conduct the tests as part of an agreement with the state.Travelers will need to be able to show proof of their negative test results from a CLIA certified laboratory. Those who can’t will be required to quarantine for two weeks or until they can provide proof of their test results.Ige said in a press release that the new pre-travel testing program “is an important step toward reviving our economy while continuing to protect public health.”Earlier this year, Hawaii had plans to start a pre-travel testing program on Aug. 1 but had to postpone them as COVID-19 cases spiked on the U.S. mainland and in Hawaii. A shortage of testing supplies also forced delays. 1045
